The Assamese population inthe City is agog with festivespirits. The community cele-

brates one of the most importantfestivals, the Magh Bihu, onSaturday, which is marked byfeasting and the jol (a delicacy).

“Traditionally the feast isorganised in the paddy fieldswhere temporary thatched hutscalled belaghar are set up. In frontof them we light a pyramid-shaped bonfire with hay, bambooand wood called meji. But for thelast seven years I’ve been awayfrom home and I miss the tradi-tional fervour of Bihu,” says RitaChaudhary, a technical writer inthe City.

“I miss the fun around the fes-tival and the feast. Bihu is usually aweek-long celebration. There areseveral traditions associated withthe Magh Bihu. The festival is alsoknown as Bhogali Bihu. Bhogmeans food and the name signifiesthat the stores and granaries inhomes are filled with newly har-vested crop,” says Rumi Borah, anIT employee in the City.

“Although we get a fewAssamese delicacies in the City, forthose of us who hail from Assam, the authentic taste of food at home

is irreplaceable,” says ChayanikaBhattacharya, who feels thatdespite many Assamese living inthe City the essence of Magh Bihuis missing. Bihu is not just aboutfood and bonfire, it’s also associat-ed with many sports and games.

“During childhood, we used toenjoy buffalo fights, cockfights andbulbuli fights. However, this is nowdiminishing,” says Chayanika.Traditionally, the Assamese spendthe entire night around a bonfiresinging folk songs, beating drumsand playing games. The nextmorning people gather around themejis and throw in pithas (ricecakes) and betel nuts as an offer-ing to the fire god.

The assortment of delicaciesinclude komal saul, mudi, akhoi, xandoh, mah kodai, cakes madefrom date palm, pitha and kalamdani dhanor sira.

Hyderabad’s newmayor Mohd MajidHussain seems to begung ho about his

new role. According to sources, the new mayor who has com-pleted eight days in office iseager to get a hold of the stateof affairs of the GHMC. Hussainis reportedly keen to under-stand the basics of administra-tion and face the challengeslying ahead in terms of deliver-ing services to the over 7 lakhpopulation of the corporation.

The mayor, who assumedcharge on January 5, hasalready held review meetingswith GHMC commissioner MTKrishna Babu, special commis-sioner Naveen Mittal, engineerin chief Dhan Singh and alladditional commissioners inthe last few days. Many top offi-cials in the corporation are say-ing that the new mayor, beingyoung and enthusiastic, is keenon learning the nuances ofadministration and welfare programmes.

“The mayor is eager to learnthings. He is keen to know thestatus of various ongoing devel-

opment projects within the cor-poration limits. The mayor hasbeen asking us to completeongoing projects viz road, storm water drains and streetmaintenance works, laying ofnew roads, recarpeting workswithin the stipulated time andavoid any delays,” said an offi-cial of the Engineering wing.

However, many officials feelthat the mayor is slow in grasp-ing the nuances of administra-tive matters. According to theseofficials, the mayor is yet to gothrough the crucial GHMC Act-1955. It may be emphasisedthat the Act consists of the rules

and clauses pertaining to pow-ers and functions of the mayor.

First challenge The first challenge the mayorgoing to face is the approval ofthe budget for the next finan-cial year (2012-13). He is hold-ing a special standing commit-tee meeting on January 18. Itmay be emphasised that thedraft budget for this year ispegged at `2900 crores.

Sources at the corporationtold Postnoon that the subjectof finance seems to be an alienlanguage to the new mayor. Heis making an effort to under-stand financial terms like rev-enue surplus and revenuedeficit. The mayor held a reviewmeeting with additional com-missioner (Finance) ShivaParvathi and other officials tofind out the salient features ofthe annual budget.

The officials reportedlyexplained and appraised him ofvarious aspects of the budget.“The subject of finance andannual budget seems to be analien subject to the mayor. Buthe is showing a lot of interest inknowing the subject and get agrasp over it,” said one officialfrom the finance department.

India’s second-largest urbandevelopment authority, Hy -dera bad Metro poli tan

Deve lop ment Authority(HMDA), is plagued with prob-lems. The authority, whichplayed a crucial role in auc-tioning valuable governmentlands is now searching forother options to generateincome owing to various pre-vailing factors. The Telanganaagitation and the slump in thereality sector are main factorsto blame.

It may be recalled that ittakes credit for the construc-tion of prestigious projects likeOuter Ring Road (ORR), PVNRElevated Expressway and all theflyovers in Hyderabad andRanga Reddy districts.

Between the years 2004–2010, the authority had earned`3,818 crore by auctioning 650acres of land. Of this amount, the HMDA had paid `2,684crore to the State governmenttowards resource mobilisationleaving the authority penniless.Attempts by the HMDA to gen-erate income also did not suc-ceed as the realty sector record-ed a heavy downfall due to theTelangana agitation since

December 2009. The notifications issued by

the authorities for auctioning4.7 acres of land in the upmar-ket Nandagiri Hills did not gar-ner the expected response frombuyers.

Accounts seized The condition of HMDA is

so bad, it could not even pay taxto the IT Department on theincome it earned from the landauctions between the years2004–2010. The IT Departmenthad issued notices to HMDA,which the officials chose toignore. In November 2009, theIT Department seized HMDA’sbank accounts and filed a caseagainst the authority with theTribunal. When HMDAapproached the State govern-ment for help, it immediatelyset up a three-member com-mittee to look into the issue.

Income source The remaining income gen-

erating sources of HMDA are the4.79 acres in Nandagiri Hills, plots in Miyapur, Nallagandla,Asifna gar and Ramachandra-puram areas. The State govern-ment has given the HMDA anextension to Land Regulari -sation Scheme (LRS). TheHMDA officials have decided toincrease the existing LRSamount from 14 per cent to 20per cent of the total land value.Md Inkeshaf Ahmed

The steps launched byGreater Hyderabad Muni -cipal Corporation (GHMC)

to collect property tax from the residents are yielding desiredresults. The corporation has beenable to collect `354 crore as prop-erty tax till January 6, 2012.

Interestingly, the amount col-lected so far is more than half thetarget set for the ongoing financialyear (FY) 2011–12. The corpora-tion has fixed a target of ̀ 700 crorefor the current FY. Officials of thefinance wing of the corporationare happy with the collections.

GHMC Commissioner MTKrishna Babu, after assumingcharge last year, put specialemphasis on collection of proper-ty tax. He held a series of review

meetings with officials concernedto streamline the process by plug-ging loopholes in collection ofproperty tax. He fixed area-wisetargets for the deputy commis-sioners and stressed on achievingthem. Day-to-day targets havebeen setup to achieve the FY goals.

Innovative stepsAmong the various steps that

were launched, web hosting ofthe names of the top-1,000 prop-erty tax defaulters served its pur-pose. One of the property taxdefaulters in the list was the titu-lar prince of Hyderabad PrinceMukram Jha Bahadur. He is thegrandson of the world-famous

seventh Nizam of HyderabadMir Osman Ali Khan and is stillconsidered as the eighth Nizamby many residents of the City.Postnoon, in an earlier edition, revealed that the prince was oneof the property tax defaulters.

“The web hosting of the top1,000 property tax defaulters’names and issue of 8 lakh war-rants to property owners hasyielded results. We will continuethis practice in future too,”GHMC additional commissioner(Finance) Shiva Parvathi toldPostnoon.

Officials of the corporationare expecting to achieve theirentire target in the ongoingfinancial year. The institution ofcash awards to residents of thecorporation, who pay their taxon time through a lucky drawsystem has also proven to be an effective medium to encour-age prompt payment of theproperty tax.

THE FACES OF HYDERABADGOPAL YADAV, WELDER, Yousufguda

Gopal Yadav is busy welding metal, his cigarettelying lazily between his lips. One mightassume nothing in the world shakes him, not

even the sound of hammering coming from rightnext to him.

That is until you noticethat his hands are shaking.

He wearily says that hisnightly drinking causes this.Gopal has been welding forthe past 35 years. Years ofdoing the job have made himimmune to the sound or thesmell of burnt ozone.

His welding torch con-stantly sparks, but he has nofear of the burns he acquiresevery day or the nauseatingfumes he inhales. All part ofthe job, he says, though heagrees his eyesight has beenaffected.

His work starts at 9.30amand he shuts shop at 7pm.His two sons run anotherwelding shop.

Earning `500 per day he makes around `20,000per month. This unassuming man has no ambitionsof earning more than that.

CLASSIFIEDS New Telugutext books in limboU [email protected]

The Telugu Academy and theBoard of Intermediate are at

loggerheads over the printing oftext books for Intermediate stu-dents. With the change in syllabus, there is every need for printing thenew text books as per the NCERTstandards. The issue was broughtto the notice of the Chief MinisterKiran Kumar Reddy.

While Telugu Academy hasbeen doing the job since ages, now the Inter Board is planningprinting the text books with thehelp of private corporate printinghouses. A source in the TeluguAcademy said the officers weretrying to divert the Academywork to private parties this time. There is also a change in syllabusfor the Inter students keeping theNational Entrance tests in mind.

So there is a clash of interestsbetween the Telugu Academy andalso the Intermediate Board. Thishas to be sorted out by Minister forHigher Education Damodar RajaNarsimha who is also the DeputyChief Minister.

Telugu Academy has been sur-viving on the printing orders forIntermediate books as it’s the solesource of revenue. But if it goesinto the hands of the IntermediateBoard it will be all the more diffi-cult for the Academy to survive.

Printing of the English bookhas already been allocated to a pri-vate printer by the officials of theIntermediate Board.

It all started as Numaish Masn -uaat-e-Mulki, with just 50 stallsin the Public Gardens. Over theyears it has grown in scope and

size to land an all-India status.Today it is the biggest and oftencheapest entertainer. No otherevent in the City draws crowds likeNumaish.

With Numaish in its 72nd year,old-timers recall how the fair, overthe years, has reflected the chang-ing lifestyle of the people.

“It is one of the oldest andlongest-running exhibitions.Modernisation with all its trappingshas not been able to penetrate intoits oldworld charm. It’s royal, yettypically Hyderabadi” said, Izaz Ali,owner of Kashmir Handicrafts here.

“It’s been 50 years now. Initiallymy grandfather and father use tomanage the stall and now it’s me.There has been tremendous changeover the years. Earlier there was nocompetition as there were fewstalls, but now the scenario is differ-ent; customers bargain a lot as theyhave the option of buying fromother shops” he adds.

S Abdul Rais, owner of Rajas thanHandicrafts Emporium said, “It’sNumaish and Rajasthan HandicraftsEmporium’s 72nd year too. My fore-fathers use to pitch their stalls heresince the Public Garden days.

Initially there were only 50stalls, but now the number is huge.Numaish organisers wanted to pop-ularise local industry and bringmanufacturers together on a com-mon platform. Transporting goodsfrom the railway station toNampally was easier in those days

with far less traffic. People used tobuy garments, footwear, and house-hold items, but today there is aflood of electronics and other con-sumer goods.”

Recalling earlier years and hisfather’s words, Abdul adds, “Thefirst Numaish was inaugurated bythe 7th Nizam and it lasted for just10 days. The Nizam continued topatronise Numaish and the follow-ing year it went up to 15 days.Seeking to popularise the exhibi-tion, it was extended for a month. In1946, the exhibition was shifted toits present site by Mirza Ismail.”

However, Manoj Kumar, fromJaipur, who owns Rajasthan LacBangle, is of a different opinion.“The exhibition may have grown, but there are many regulars whohave dropped out of the exhibition. The ongoing T-agitation is the mainreason for dropouts. Every year wehad a group of 10 shopkeepers fromJaipur coming to Numaish, but forthe last three to four years it’s justfive of us.”

Now, that’s a factNumaish is the only event in the

world to be organised without abreak for 46 days at a stretch.

HYDERABAD: Proving theadage – Old wine in a new bottle– right, most agreements enteredinto with industrial houses bythe State government on the firstday of Partnership Summit 2012were the ones which were onceshelved. They were ‘recovered’and dusted again with a view tojacking up the investment fig-ures.

Understandably, ChiefMinister N Kiran Kumar Reddywanted to showcase as the bestinvestment destination, espe-cially when the State passedthrough severe political turbu-lence in the last two years.

Kiran Kumar Reddy was to alarge measure successful in hiseffort of an image makeover ofthe State that was battered bynumerous crises.

While industries minister JGeeta Reddy fumbled inannouncing the total investmentcoming in — perhaps a commonslip, the State projected theinflow at Rs5.57 lakh crore.

The first day memoranda ofunderstanding (MoU) the gov-ernment showcased were for Rs81,000 crore. Chairman of GMRGroup signed an MoU for theRs30,000-crore refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in thePetro Chemical and PetroleumIndustrial region (PCPIR), whichis projected to generate employ-ment for 2,000 persons. Thiswould be set up by GMRHoldings Pvt Ltd. And the noteput out by the State governmentsaid another Rs3,000 crore wasbeing invested by the GMRInfrastructure Ltd which wouldgenerate 4,000 jobs.

The dichotomy is too glaringto be concealed, for an invest-ment of Rs30,000 crore can cre-ate only 2,000 jobs and a tenth ofit has the potential to provideemployment to double the num-ber.

Ironically, the GMR Grouphad earlier shelved this project. The infrastructure majorstepped in after ONGC decidedto drop out of the project. Assoon as the PCPIR project wasconceived, ONGC came for-ward to establish the refinery, but retracted as it found theproject ‘unviable’. Only then, the GMR group was roped in.But nothing moved ever afterand the company too remained

cold on the project after theworld economies crumbledowing to recession. When itcomes to GVK Power andInfrastructure Ltd, vice-chair-man GV Sanjay Reddy said thatthe projects for which his com-pany would be signing MoUswere not new. They were in thepipeline for quite some time. They were kept in cold-storagedue to non-availability ofresources. Now that the compa-ny itself owned a coal mine inAustralia, he hoped that the2,400 MW power project couldcome up.

The company also contem-plated expansion of Jegurupaduand Gautami power plants, eachby 400MW. Due to shortage ofgas supply from the KG D-6 wellsof Reliance Industries, the infras-tructure major set the expansion

plans aside in May 2011. He toldPostnoon that there was notimeline for these projects. “Asand when we get the fuel link-age, we will go ahead. If the gov-ernment offers land and fuel-linkage, we will enter into apower purchase agreement. Orelse, they can be merchantplants,” said Reddy.

The BR Shetty Group signedan MoU for Rs30,000 crorepetroleum refinery in PCPIR inVisakhapatnam. However, thedetails of financials are notmade public. The Yash Birlagroup, which has been contem-plating the investments forquite some time, will imple-ment the projects only if theland is made available to themand hassle-free clearances wereaccorded. Yash Birla himselfconfirmed this to Postnoon.

HYDERABAD: “The Free TradeAgreement with India may takesome time. The first step towardsthat relationship would be bilateralinvestment treaty. We urged theObama Administration to take thisas a priority. We will follow up notjust for India but in the interests ofAmerica,” said Senator Mark Warner,Co-Chair, Senator India Caucus talk-ing at a press conference in ThePartnership Summit 2012.

“We had sessions on informationtechnology, biotechnology, pharma-cy and life sciences and see India hasa lot of opportunities and growthmarket in these areas,” he said.

The information technologycompanies like Infosys and Wiprowere planning to expand their foot-print in America and wanted assur-ance to get their investments pro-tected. The first move would bebilateral investment treaty.

The concerns on outsourcingwere less today compared to fiveyears ago. That could be mitigated byIndian companies investing inUnited States of America. Everypolitician wanted to create jobs hisown place, district and own country.America had to compete with theindustries globally.

“But if you see the visa issues, that there is legislation to make H1BVisa easier for graduates in Science,Engineering, Maths programmes toextend their stay. This will benefitIndians and create entrepreneurs inAmerica,” he added.

Partnership summit: Old wine in new bottle

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Major IndustriesMinister J Geeta Reddy met a series of foreign business delegations and explained to them thatinvestment climate in the State was conducive and the government would extend all help.

Biz treatywith Indiais priority

Industry leaders are happybecause the Government couldorganise an event of this scale

at a time the State is dragging itsfeet on all fronts.A senior func-tionary of the CII’s SME divisionsaid even if 10-15 per cent of theprojected Rs. 5.50 lakh croreinvestment came in, this summitwould have served its purpose.

Another former president ofthe CII’s AP chapter said that Rs. 1lakh crore would surely come as an

investment, as it was promised bythe domestic companies.

While the country’s industrybiggies gave a slip to the summit, the Government tried to put up abrave front. The Chief Ministerstayed on at HyderabadInternational Convention Centreand went on meeting foreignindustrial delegates one after theother.

Industries CommissionerKarikal Valaven told Postnoon that

the Government was confident ofroping in the proposed invest-ments. “Unlike other States, wehave not gone round them to ivest. They came. So I am sure, they willinvest.”

Jay Galla sounded more opti-mistic than anybody else when hesaid the business environment andinvestment climate were given aboost in the troubled times. Thesummit, indeed, rekindled theactivity.

Business confidence bolstered

As and when we getthe fuel linkage, wewill go ahead. If thegovernment offersland and fuel-link-age, we will enterinto a power pur-chase agreement. Orelse, they can bemerchant plants

By the time my extended family membersfinish reading this column, they’ll thinkI’m the snootiest brat the family’s ever

given birth to.And I don’t deny that I perhaps am. I

believe family functions are the biggest torturein social situations I’ve ever had to endure —sometimes in the name of a pooja, at othertimes in the name of weddings and weddinganniversaries, birthdays, naming ceremoniesand deaths. I confess that I’ve considered manya time to down a tequila shot or two beforeattending these dos.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a closetdepressive maniac who detests all social situa-tions. Far from it. I have a healthy social life anda large inner and outer circle of friends whomake my days more than meaningful. Aboutextended family members, I’m not sure I cansay the same. Take, for example, an 82-year-olduncle who believes in the idea of open criti-cism. Just that the criticism is so open and soloud that it borders on the abusive and some-times even crosses that line. If he doesn’t get hissoup hot, he yells at the bearers. If he doesn’tget a good dinner seat, he yells at the hosts. Ifhe thinks the pundit didn’t do a good job ofreciting the mantras, he yells at the poor man inthe saffron robes. A few weeks back he yelled atme. Reason? I didn’t answer his phone call. Itried to explain that I was driving.

He said: “I don’t care what you were doing. How dare you not answer the phone when Icall!”

I had become the centre of attention andthose around us were staring at me.

I’ve been avoiding the uncle at all socialevents because one never knows when he’sgoing to break into a tirade of abuses. Hedoesn’t mean bad, mom says. But when shestarts to speak of his good heart, I turn up thevolume on the car stereo.

For some time, I pause to wonder why. Isthis behaviour an outward manifestation of hisdesire to hold on to the heyday when he con-trolled businesses and had a busy life? Or is itcoming from possessiveness for the once-joint-now-broken-down family? Maybe it’s both, andalso his conviction that he continues to wieldthat kind of power on us. Isn’t this the story ofpretty much every family unit, where the batonis passed on to the next generation but the

seniors hold on to something more? And then I begin to think if family gather-

ings would be as interesting if not for thesesideshows. One word – boring. Along with freeadvice and pearls of wisdom, my relatives alsoprovide free entertainment.

It’s for me to keep my eyes and ears open, watch and observe how people trip over them-

selves to outdo each other, have a good laughand go home.

From some relationships, there’s just noescape. Sometimes we become the pain and atother times, they. But there’s one predictablething — that there’s never a dull moment at anyfamily gathering. This temperamental uncle, though, I’m going to continue to avoid.

SULKING WON’T HELPDhoni, Team India

Indian skipper MahendraSingh Dhoni dropped a

bombshell when hecasually mentioned during a

press meeting that he was con-sidering retirement from Testformat by 2013 to ensure he

can be there for the 2015 WorldCup. No one’s fooled when the30-year-old skipper announcedthis as the team has been per-forming dismally in tours out-side the sub-continent where

they have to face real pace andbounce. When the captain him-self is sulking like a child after

receiving flak from differentquarters, it exposes how lowthe team morale is. Starringbefore adulating crowds on

‘dead’ domestic pitches mayhave boosted personal records

but performing on the greenwickets abroad is a different

ball game altogether. CaptainCool needs to do some serious

pep talk and get his squad tobuck up and deliver rather than

attempting these lame tactics to divert attention from the glaring failures.

WHY WE LOVE...vigilantes

It is best to be vigilant our-selves, more so when the

uniformed law enforcercannot be trusted with our secu-

rity. While the police can getaway citing poor staff to area

ratio, disregard for the law stem-ming out of inefficiency of the

cops cannot be ignored. Toapprehend law breakers and try

and punish them effectivelybrings down crime rate. When

this does not happen, miscreantsget encouraged. The common

man is left with no alternativebut to do a Sriramulu Patel.

Swelling in theneck is common

Dr Kiran Krishnamurti

My son is a month old and doingquite well otherwise. But a week agowe noticed a small swelling on heright side of his neck. It seems to bequite painless but for some reasonsince the time we have noticed thisswelling we also feel that he is keep-ing his head tilted to one side. I havetried massaging his neck 3-4 times aday but nothing seems to be helpinghim. Please advise. This is not an uncommon occur-rence. Most probably what your sonhas is called a ‘sternomastoidswelling’. The exact cause of thiscondition is not clearly known but itis often associated with breach andforceps deliveries. Sometimes babieswith this condition may also havehip problems which need to belooked into. An ultrasound of theneck will help to confirm the diagno-sis. Massage does not help much. What you need to do is stretch theaffected neck muscle by gently mov-ing the child’s head away from theside of the swelling. This should bedone at least 6-8 times a day.

How many times haveyou dealt with achurning tummyaccompanied by nau-

sea and a heavy head after afood fest or when you’vepopped a tablet on an emptystomach? You put it down to anupset stomach and reach outfor that glass of nimbu paani. But hold on, your symptomssignal acidity and not an upsetstomach. And that nimbu paaniwill only do more harm thangood.

What is acidity? The stomach has gastric

glands which secrete acids tohelp digest the food we eat.Usually the acid levels in thebody are controlled, but if forsome reason the levels of theseacids increase, then it can causeacidity.

Sometimes when we con-sume hard to digest foods, thestomach secretes more acids todigest it. Continuous secretionof more acids can cause acidity.“Sometimes a bacterial infec-tion is also responsible for thatburning sensation in the stom-ach, the most common type ofbacteria being H.Pylori,” saysDr Sundeep Lakhtakia, consul-tant gastroenterologist at theAsian Institute ofGastroenterology.

Usually peoplewho’ve had a heavymeal may alsohave a burn-ing sen-sation intheirupper

abdomen or chest. Often pop-ping medicines on an emptystomach or frequently takingpainkillers can also cause acidity.

Long gaps between mealsare also said to cause acidity, which is why experts stress onthe need to eat frequent smallmeals.

SymptomsOften when you may find

that you wake up with a heavyhead and an uncomfortablefeeling in the stomach. Theseare some common symptomsof acidity. Other symptomsinclude:n Heartburn — burning pain

in your stomach n Throat dryness n Unbearable stomach painn Coughing n Feeling hungry frequently n Hours after a meal Chest

pain n Constant pain in the upper

abdomen n Prolonged heartburn n Nausea

What you can doA prolonged acidity prob-

lem can sometimes give rise tostomach ulcers too. So a fewsteps can help you battle acidityeffectively.

“Simple things like takingmedications only after eatingsomething can help curb acidi-ty. If you’re taking a long courseof painkillers or aspirin thenyou must consult with yourdoctor about taking a preven-tive acid suppressing medicineto protect your stomach,” saysDr Sundeep, adding, “Avoid eat-ing fried stuff, spicy foods andalways eat within limit.Nicotine, alcohol and citrusfoods should be kept at baywhen you have acidity.”

Dr Sundeep adds that it isimportant to eat in moderationand frequently to keep the gas-tric acid levels within normallimits. “Sometimes the acid cantrickle into the mouth and giverise to a recurrent cough or sorethroat,” he says.

He goes on to add, “Apartfrom eating in moderation,

you must also take carenot to lie down imme-diately after a meal.Besides, drinkingherbal tea, coconutwater or a glass ofcold milk can helpneutralise the acid, thereby cutting down

acidity.”So the next time

you feel that burningsensation in the stom-

ach or chest, do reachout for a glass of cold milk and

not nimbu paani. And yes, steering clear of

oily and spicy food fora while will help too.

WASHINGTON: Upsetting cir-cadian rhythms, the bio-clocksfound in animals and humans, can cause brain degeneration, loss of motor function and pre-mature death.

Until this finding, it wasn’tclear which came first —whether the disruption of bio-logical clock mechanisms wasthe cause or the result of neu-rodegeneration.

The biological clock, inhumans and animals, is a com-plex genetic mechanism tuned

to the 24-hour day and regularcycles of light, dark and sleep.

It influences a wide range ofbiological processes — from fer-tility to hormone production, feeding patterns, DNA repair, sleep, stress reactions, even theeffectiveness of medications.

“In these experiments, weshowed through both environ-mental and genetic approachesthat disrupting the biologicalclock accelerated these healthproblems,” said Kuntol Rakshit,an Oregon State University grad-

uate fellow, the journalNeurobiology of Disease reports.

“There’s a great deal of inter-est right now in studies on circa-dian rhythms, as we learn moreabout the range of problemsthat can result when they aredisrupted,” Rakshit said.“Ultimately, we hope thisresearch will be taken from thelaboratory to the bedside.”

These studies were donewith fruit flies, but Oregon sci-entists said previous researchhas indicated there are close

parallels between them andhumans, according to anOregon statement.

Some of the genes regulatingcircadian rhythms in flies are soimportant that they have beenpreserved through millions ofyears of separate evolution andstill do the same thing inhumans. In humans, researchershave found strong correlationsbetween disrupted clock mech-anisms, aging, and neurologicdiseases such as Alzheimer’s andHuntington’s disease. IANS

Ragi is a goodsource of calcium

Dr Suneetha Sapur

Please suggest a few foods that arerich in calcium and nutrients as mychild does not eat most nutritiousfood? Most of the time the child prefers cer-tain foods and refuses others likemilk. It is more or less a completefood, and the best source of calcium. It is difficult to get most kids to haveplain milk. Hence try and give kidsmilk in different forms, with attractiveappearance and flavours. You can givethem either hot or cold milk to suit theconsumption moments and moods,eg warm malt shakes, breakfast cerealwith milk, fruit custard, puddings etc. n Cheese/paneer: is a good sourceof calcium. It is easy to incorporate itin many dishes for kids like, sand-wiches, veggie sub, and chapati rolls.n Curd: many children may prefer toeat curd than drink mi lk.n Ragi: among cereals ragi is a goodsource of calcium. Ragi/flour with itsappearance and bland flavour is diffi-cult for kids to accept but can bemixed with other cereals like in rotis, malted ragi, ragi halwa etc.n Green leafy vegetables: childrendon’t like these but they are the bestsources of micronutrients. You couldtry giving kids mint parathas, pow-dered or pasted forms of leafy veg-etables can be used in curriesinstead of adding them directly.n Egg: veggie scrambled, Frenchtoasts and cheesy omelets can beinteresting ways of providing calci-um and many important nutrientsfor kids growth and development.

The imperfectperfection

My subject of interest is theindependent and modernworking woman of the

great cities of this country, whocreates the annual reports in officeas dexterously as she designsannual budgets at home. It is per-haps not the most egalitarian ofsocieties we live in today, but real-ly, is there something like anutopian setup in society? Ofcourse not. And isn't that whatmakes for a dynamic world? Hell, yes!

This little column is my tributeto all these independent womenwho have been able to find theirlittle space in the ever-demandingurban world. It is a salute to thosewho, despite the demands of thedaily life, are able to find peace, albeit for a few minutes over a cupof coffee before embarking on the‘journey of life’. It is a recognitionof her strength to monitor herfragile sensitivities in a world thatclaims to be built on equality, butone that doesn’t refrain from bar-ing their claws.

We are not ready to accept the‘given’ anymore and we have thegusto to realise dreams that soundsurreal to the rest, and display theotherwise invisible ‘taken’ sign-board only when we have foundthe right man, and not becausesociety said so. We are those thatare secretly looked up to, admiredby many, and yes, envied by a few.

We live life to the fullest, knowour ‘boundaries’ and yet dream tothe fullest. We do realise that it isnot a perfect world, but also knowthat in chasing that ever-elusiveperfection, we do not want to loseout on the present.

Unlike many, who haven’t beenable to break free from the shack-les set by society, we are the luckyfew who have managed to createour own space — spaces thatdespite unspoken societal pres-sures, allow us to write and rewriteour own life’s stories, one at atime. And the best part about this?We are growing in numbers, one ata time.

MONEY MINT

Cashing on her keensense of style, Kate

collaborated withTopshop in 2007 andlaunched her own line ofclothing. In 2010 shesigned a deal withLongchamp to designhandbags for them.

THE QUEENBEE

Everyone knows her, envies her and wantsto be her. She is afterall, Kate Moss, theultimate fashion icon. This Monday, sheturns 38. The word‘obsessed’ is anunderstatement todescribe the followingthat this fashionistahas. Postnoon sum-marises her journeyinto the world ofmodelling, right fromher first shot to hertryst with controversies and herachievements

ARTIST’S MUSE

She might be controversy’s favourite child but that does not deterher from being somebody’s muse. She’s been immortalised in

bronze, painted in oils and photographed all over the world. But Mosshas also been paid the kind of compliment normally reserved forEgyptian queens and mythological goddesses. She has been sculpted ingold. Artist Marc Quinn is the man behind this creation. Entitled Siren, the 50kg (110lb) hollow statue was made by the artist who describedMoss as “the ideal beauty of the moment”.

Indeed, Moss’s marriage to all things bad hasbeen the making and breaking of her. Moss

was for a time known as the anti-supermodelbecause of her waif-like figure as opposed tothe curves of reigning models like CindyCrawford, Naomi Campbell, Elle Macphersonand Claudia Schiffer. Her looks sparked off adebate on eating disorders and brought to thefore a new trend of size zero in fashion. Itearned her a lot criticism from all quarters, butshe decided to stick to her ‘Nothing tastes asgood as skinny feels’ motto. This soon becamethe ‘inspiration’ for millions of anorexics andbulimia sufferers worldwide.

ENTRY INTO THEGLAM WORLD

Sarah Doukas is the person whothe world should thank for dis-

covering this talented model. At theage 14, in 1988 Moss was discov-ered by the founder of Storm ModelManagement, at JFK Airport in NewYork City, after a holiday in theBahamas. Moss’s career began whenCorinne Day shot black-and-whitephotographs of her, styled byMelanie Ward, for British magazineThe Face when she was 16, in aphoto shoot titled The 3rd Summerof Love. But her actual claim tofame came in 1992 that created the ‘waif’ look when she featured in Calvin Klein campaigns with Mark Wahlberg, pioneering the‘heroin chic’.

FAMILY FRONT

Kate certainly has a very interestingpersonal life, the reason why

tabloids are obsessed with her. From1994 to 1998 she had a stormy affairwith Johnny Depp. She dated a hostof other celebrities includingLeonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg,Daniel Craig and Spacehog guitaristAntony Langdon. Out of them, her on-off relationship with Pete Doherty wasthe most famous one, his heroinaddiction and hell-rasing habits creat-ing a furore. In 2008 she started arelationship with Jamie Hince, leadguitarist of The Kills, and married himin 2011. She has a daughter, LilaGrace Moss, 9, with Jefferson Hack.

Despite her much-publicised relationship with drugs, Kate managed to keep one thing intact —her fashion sense. Fashion critics always marvelled at how amazing Moss looked, dressed in hot

pants and Nancy Sinatra boots, even while she was allegedly high. And others could not help butwonder how despite her abusing her body so, her body remained so beautiful? She never leaves thehouse in sweatpants and is always dressed to the T. Well, for one thing, in the fashion industryimage is everything and Kate Moss is a beautiful image by herself.

From anti-supermodel it became CocaineKate. On September 15, 2005, the UK’s Daily

Mirror published grainy camera-phone stills ofsupermodel Kate Moss perched on a leathercouch in a London recording studio, allegedlychopping and snorting multiple lines of cocainewith the quick sureness of a practiced user. Outcame the claws and down went the supermod-el, she lost all her major endorsements withpartners like Burberry, Chanel and H&M. Moss’sdownfall also brought to light the rampant useof drugs in the modelling world and shebecame its poster girl.

Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu(2002)Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu starring Tarun andAarthi Agarwal beat other biggies like Nagaand Takkari Donga in January, 2002 much tothe surprise of trade analysts. The film hadthe right mix of romance, comedy and familydrama and Tarun scored a hit after two yearsof Nuvve Kavali's release.

Tollywood has always left audiences spoilt forchoice during Sankranti, when some of thebiggest stars vie for box-office supremacy. Wetake a look at the biggest mid-January hits fromthe past 10 years

COMPILED BY HEMANTH [email protected]

Mirapakay (2011)This Ravi Teja, Richa andDeeksha Seth starrer com-peted with four other filmsin 2011 and emerged as thewinner. Directed by HarishShankar, the film had RaviTeja as an undercover copwho joins a college for anoperation. A laugh riot withadequate action andromance, the film had allthe right ingredients tohook the audience through-out the film. Thaman'smusic also worked a lot infavour of the film.

Krishna (2008)The film resurrected Ravi

Teja and VV Vinayak'scareers when both of themwere going through a briefslump. It was the first timeRavi Teja and Vinayak hadteamed up for a film. RaviTeja and Brahmanandam's

combination clicked so wellthat the audience couldn't

stop raving about the come-dy and Trisha's presence

helped the film to become ahuge hit.

Desamuduru(2007) Allu Arjun showed off hissix-pack for the first time inDesamuduru, which inspireda lot more actors in the filmindustry to follow suit. PuriJagannadh, who was on ahigh after the success ofPokiri, directed the film andHansika made her debut inTelugu cinema in this actiondrama. It still remains asone of the biggest hits everin Allu Arjun's career.

Lakshmi (2006)Venkatesh, Nayanthara and

Charmee starrer Lakshmiwas a box-office winner inJanuary 2006. After a long

time, Venkatesh was seen inan action-packed film and itworked quite well with the

audience. Apart fromLakshmi, another film

named Devadasu went onto be a huge hit after a

slow start. Ram and Ileanamade their debut in this

film directed by YVSChowdary and it didn't take

too long for both Ram andIleana to establish them-

selves as bankable stars inthe Telugu film industry.

Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005)Siddharth and Trisha made waves at the box-office in 2005 withNuvvostanante Nenoddantana, which released on the same day

as Naa Alludu. Loosely inspired from Maine Pyar Kiya, PrabhuDeva made his debut as a director with this film and it even won

the Filmfare Award for Best Film that year. All the songs werechartbusters and there were instances of people watching the film

at least five times to watch Siddharth and Trisha's dazzling on-screen chemistry.

Varsham (2004)Two years after making his debut, Prabhasturned out to be a heartthrob with this film, which was directed by Shoban. It was alsoTrisha's first big-ticket film in Telugu and herperformance got her rave reviews. Devi SriPrasad's music was an instant chartbuster andthe rest, as they say, is history.

Okkadu (2003)Okkadu turned out to be an instant classic

when it released in January 2003. After a stringof flops, both Mahesh Babu and Gunasekhar

made a comeback in style and how! Bhumika'srestrained performance, Prakash Raj's villainy,

dialogues and screenplay were almost perfect. The film is still rated among the best Telugufilms made in the past 10 years and it's not

without a reason.

Adhurs (2010)Adhurs starring Tarak,Nayanthara and Sheela inlead roles released amidsthigh drama in 2010.Telangana Rashtra Samithihad threatened to stop thescreening of the film in sev-eral districts acrossTelangana; however, thatdidn't stop the film frombecoming one of the topgrossers of 2010. VVVinayak and Tarak hadteamed up after six yearsand Tarak played a dualrole in the film much to thedelight of his fans.

Arundhati (2009)The film that catapulted

Anushka's fame to thezenith, Arundhati shattered

several box office records in2009 before Magadheera

released. The film proved tobe the box-office king and

raked in a share of close to`35 crore. Considering that

only Anushka and SonuSood played lead roles in

the film, it was nothingshort of a miracle. It swept

the Nandi Awards that yearand Anushka won every

possible award for herpower-packed performance. The film once again provid-

ed a glimmer of hope forwomen-centric films.

Shaurya is keeping a

pretty tight sched-ule as she shufflesbetween promot-

ing her film Sadda Adda, which releases today and

trains for Krissh 2. Talkingabout her role in Sadda

Adda, the former Kingfishercalendar girl says, “I play therole of a spoilt, rich Delhi girlcalled Shreya Gujral who hasan adventurous streak. She is

a strong-headed girl whodoesn’t need anyone’s shoul-

ders to cry on. If she lovessomebody, then she doesn’t

really like to shares theirproblems.”

But Shaurya is quick toclarify that there are no simi-

larities between the charac-ter and her in real life. “There

would be no fun in that casein doing the role!” she

exclaims, going on to add, “Inreal life, if I am in love with

somebody, I would love toshare everything with that

person and I will always bethere for him. It was difficultfor me to do the role becauseif it wasn’t balanced, it would

turn into a negative character.”

While Shaurya didn’t real-ly relate to the other aspects

of the character, she didrelate to the adventurous partof it. “I too, have an adventur-

ous streak and I like to ridebikes and drive cars,” says

Shaurya. It was perhaps thisadventurous streak that got

her the role in Krissh 2 whereshe has to perform a lot of

stunts we hear. ThoughShaurya remains tight-lipped

about her role in the action-

hero film, on prodding shedid share some interesting

information. “I play a nega-tive role in Krissh 2 and it willbe perhaps the best anybody

has seen of me on screen.Rakesh Roshan has given me

a great opportunity and he

will be the first director to usemy talent to its full potential. There is a lot of action in the

film and I have been trainingfor four hours every day,

which will go on till I finishshooting for the film. My

schedule is quite hectic rightnow but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me

and I want to do full justice toit. Rakesh Roshan has shownso much confidence in me, Idon’t want to let him down,”

explains the leggy beauty. Wewanted to know if Hrithik has

trained Shaurya for the filmbut apparently Hrithik is now

busy taking care of hisinjuries and is training

by himself. “I am trainingwith a well-qualified fitness

expert every day,” Shaurya

informs us. The Rajput beauty who

did her schooling atHyderabad considers herself

a true Hyderabadi. “I havealways loved this city and it

gives me great pleasure whenI see people from here mak-

ing it big,” says Shaurya. Thejourney till here wasn’t aneasy one; she has had her

share of struggles. “I startedoff as a model in Hyderabad

with just `500 and I stillremember how much I had

to struggle. Then I went toBengaluru and Mumbai. It

was a great experience andthen Kingsfisher happened,

after which I got into the-atre,” reminisces Shaurya.

The actor then makes anhonest confession, “You

should see my earlier films, Iwas pathetic at acting, but

my passion to learn kept megoing. Now I have improved a

lot and have been signed upfor Krissh 2. Who wouldn’t

want to be a part of this suc-cessful franchise?” she ques-

tions, and adds, “Everyonehas their share of strugglesand when the time is right

you get your due. My experi-ences have made me who Iam and today I am getting

my due. There is nothing thatone can’t achieve.”

But there is one thing thatthe actress is unhappy about, she says, “I am from here but

I haven’t done a Telugu filmas yet. They go to Mumbaiand get girls to come and

work here, but also I under-stand they have their own

requirements. But I am opento doing Telugu films and I

would really like to workopposite the likes of Mahesh

Babu and Ravi Teja.”

Model-turned-actor Shaurya Chauhan’s struggle is finally payingoff as she now joins Hrithik in the second installment of Krissh

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

AREQUIPA: Stephane Peter -hansel of France consolidated hisoverall lead in the car section ofthe Dakar Rally on Thursday withvictory in the 11th stage of the gru-elling race, between Arica, Chile, and the Peruvian town ofArequipa.

Mini driver Peterhansel, who isbidding for a 10th win in the Dakarafter having already won six timesin the motorbikes and three timesin the cars, clocked 3hr 56min53sec over the 598km stage, whichfeatured a 478km timed run.

Spanish driver Nani Romacame in second in his Mini at 3:44,with Portugal's Ricardo Leal DosSantos, also in a Mini, 8:56 behindPeterhansel's pace.

"There wasn't much visibility, even opening the road, becausethe wind blew the dust up makingit difficult to see," saidPeterhansel, who stretched hislead in the overall standings fromRoma to 22:49.

"There's around twenty min-utes between Nani and me now, with two big stages of dunes tocome. We'll have to play it safe. It'salways been like that. Each timeI've won the car race, I always hada team-mate hot on my heels:

Masuoka, Alphand. There's alwaysbeen this sort of pressure to han-dle." There was drama in themotorbike section as France'sCyril Despres claimed his fourthstage win to extend his overall leadon Spain's defending championMarc Coma.

Despres - whose relations withKTM team-mate Coma deteriorat-ed after stewards halved theFrenchman's huge deficit onMonday's stage - added more thantwo minutes to his advantage onthe Spaniard to 2min 22sec in theoverall standings.

"It was a tough day, all in all! Animportant development might beif someone moves in betweenMarc and me. Tomorrow will becomplicated, but anything can ha -ppen on the Dakar," said Despres.

It was also the French rider's30th stage victory on the Dakar. Hefinished the 534km special 1min39sec ahead of another KTM riderGerard Farres Guell of Spain.

Federer, Nadal insame-half

MELBOURNE: Roger Federerand Rafael Nadal are in the samehalf of a grand slam for the firsttime in seven years after the drawmade Friday for next week'sAustralian Open in Melbourne.

Defending champion NovakDjokovic has world number fourAndy Murray in the top half of themen's singles draw, while Nadal andFederer, second and third rankedrespectively, were placed for the bot-tom half.

It is the first time since the 2005French Open that 16-time grandslam champion Federer and 10-timemajor winner Nadal have been pit-ted in the same half of a grand slamdraw.

The draw means that if theyprogress, the quartet will meet in thelast four with Djokovic and Murrayon collision course and Federer andNadal eyeing a semi-final clash.

Djokovic, who won three of thefour grand slams and five Masterstitles in a remarkable 2011, beginshis Australian Open title defenceagainst Italy's Paolo Lorenzi.

"I didn't play in any lead-uptournaments (to the Open) because Iplayed a lot of matches in 2011 andI felt that I didn't have to perform inthe first week of the season,"Djokovic said at the draw.

"I feel comfortable with prepar-ing for an extra week ... I hope itworks. "I arrived last Wednesday, for

the last five-six years I haven'tarrived in Melbourne this early so Ithink I have enough time to preparefor the conditions."

Last year's Australian Open finaltriumph over Murray was the first ofseven straight tournament wins forDjokovic in a 41-match winningstreak that was finally ended byFederer in the semi-finals of theFrench Open.

"I was playing the best tennis ofmy life, especially in the opening sixmonths of last season and one ofthe strongest moments was inAustralia last year," Djokovic said.

"I lost only one set in the tour-nament and I played incredible espe-cially in the later rounds of theevent, that's something that gaveme a lot of confidence for the rest ofthe year." Nadal and Federer willstart against qualifiers, while two-time finalist Murray, bidding tobecome Britain's first male majorwinner since Fred Perry in 1936,takes on American Ryan Harrison.

If they progress, Djokovic couldface Spanish fifth seed David Ferrerin the quarter-finals while Murraymay meet 2008 finalist Jo-WilfriedTsonga, the French sixth seed.

Federer, a four-time AustralianOpen champion, could playAmerican eighth seed Mardy Fish inthe quarters, while Nadal, who wonin Melbourne in 2009, is drawn toface Czech seventh seed TomasBerdych. The Australian Open startson Monday.

Many a time the involve-ment of politicians insport and its organisation

has drawn flak. But if you were atLB stadium for the final of the 4thVHR U-19 T20 National crickettourney, you may change youropinion.

The event was touted as beingnational, but in reality it wasinternational. It had teams fromPakistan, Sri Lanka and Malaysiataking part. And V HanumanthaRao, MP, the chairman of theCricket Federation of India, andthe event’s chief patron, saw to itthat it was an international affair.

There were cheerleaders

gyrating when wickets fell orboundaries were hit. And therewere fireworks — before and

after the prize distribution cere-mony. Chief Minister N KiranKumar Reddy, however, could

not make it to the prize distribu-tion. But there were no com-plaints: the dazzling fireworksand sizzling cheerleaders obligedand all present forgot the weari-ness of the wait.

If the event was an interna-tional affair, the final was a stateaffair. Andhra Pradesh beatHyderabad to win the trophy.Andhra Pradesh batted first.Hyderabad came on strong bytaking a couple of early wickets. But last year’s champs could notcapitalise, as Mallikarjun’s 63 andSyed Ali’s 48 helped AP put on150 for five.

But the luck that favouredHyderabad captain Arun Devadeserted him when his team went

in to bat. AP succeeded in takingwickets at regular intervals andfinally bundled Hyderabad out for130 and took the title.

AP’s victory was spectacular:“We had only six players who wereexperienced,” said AP’s captain,Rajat Choudhary. “The rest werepicked especially for this tourneythrough selection trials.”

And Rajat has an interestingstory to tell: this was his first tour-ney after a seven-month hiatus. And under his leadership, AP wonthe title without losing a singlematch in the event — the stuff ofchampions. And they rewrote his-tory, too: no team that has battedfirst at the LB stadium and won. They did.

AP lift trophy, and make history tooAndhra Pradesh beat Hyderabad to win the trophy. Andhra Pradesh batted first. Hyderabad came on strong by tak-ing a couple of early wickets. But last year’s champs could not capitalise on the bowling performance

n The wicket, despite the greenish look, was notalarming to bat on. It offered bounce and swing butIndia’s batsmen did not apply themselves.

n Both teams opted for four pace bowlers. Australia’sfast men used the wicket intelligently and picked upfour wickets before lunch itself. Ryan Harris, on hisreturn, was the pick.

n Virendra Sehwag was once again thought out.Rahul Dravid’s wall-like approach lasted only 35 ballsbefore he was castled yet another time. SachinTendulkar played some stunning straight drives beforebeing trapped leg before. What was needed was somesort of partnership. That was not forthcoming.

Tendulkar again looked thebest of the Indian batsmen on theunpredictable pitch, producingtwo elegant straight drives to theboundary in his first over.

However, he was deceived by adelivery from recalled paceman

Ryan Harris that nipped back andwas trapped leg before wicket for15 as India slumped to 59 forthree.

LIVERPOOL: Steven Gerrardwill hope to round off a fine weekwhen Liverpool entertain Stokeat Anfield as they try to maintaintheir pursuit of a European place.

Gerrard scored the winninggoal in Liverpool’s 1-0 LeagueCup semi-final first-leg win atPremier League leaders Manch -ester City on Wednesday.

And then the England mid-fielder, 31, followed that up bysigning a long-term deal that willkeep him at the club for the restof his career before he under-takes an ambassadorial role atAnfield.

The Reds go into the weekendin sixth place and have attractedcriticism for the performances ofexpensive new signings Andy

Carroll, Jordan Henderson andStewart Downing.

Liverpool — who have notwon any silverware since the FACup in 2006 — must, given the

league title looks beyond them, either win the League Cup or theFA Cup to avoid their trophydrought stretching into next sea-son, which would be their longest

spell without honours since abarren run from 1966 to 1973.

But Gerrard, who missedmost of last year through injury, maintains he would not havesigned a new contract with theclub if he did not believe the Redswere going in the right direction.

Midfielder Jay Spearing isdoubtful for the game against thePotters after limping out of theCity victory with a hamstringproblem. But other than LucasLeiva, who will miss the rest ofthe season with a knee injury,Liverpool manager KennyDalglish has no other fitness con-cerns ahead of the weekend.

Stoke have caused the Redsplenty of problems at theBritannia Stadium in recent yearsbut have not won at Anfield since1959.

Tevez’s Milan move breaks downMANCHESTER: Carlos Tevez’sproposed move to Milan has col-lapsed, leaving the on-strike Arg -entina forward facing an increas-ingly uncertain future and theManchester City manager, Rob -erto Mancini, with even less cha -nce of persuading the club’s own-ers to relax the spending restric-tions they have imposed duringthe January transfer window.

After several weeks of pro-tracted talks Milan have pulledout of the negotiations afteraccepting that City were unwillingto budge when it came to wantinga permanent transfer. Milan hadproposed a loan arrangement anda delegation from San Siro, led bythe chief executive, AdrianoGalliani, and the club’s lawyer,Lorenzo Cantamessa, made onelast attempt to persuade City torelax that position during a meet-ing in London on Thursday.

City’s acting chief executive,

John MacBeath, and the footballad ministrator, Brian Marwood,ma de it clear that the club’s ownersin Abu Dhabi were not going tochange their mind and the talksbroke up with Galliani saying he

would not return with a counter-proposal. Milan were always str -uggling to raise the £20m-£25mtra nsfer fee and the decision of Al -exandre Pato to stay in Italy and tu -rn down a move to Paris St-Ge -rmain has been a significant factor.

Tevez, whose strike at City haslasted two months, is in a state oflimbo after making it clear he isunwilling to return to Manchesterif a new buyer cannot be found.Internazionale and Juventus havealso been monitoring his positionbut Milan represented Tevez’s besthope and the player’s advisersregard the ¬latest development asa significant setback.

The list of clubs with enoughmoney to entertain the idea oftaking him on was never particu-larly long but has now receded tothe point that he will have to waituntil the summer market unlesssomething dramatically changesbetween Milan and City.
