Two worlds together Braille and DAISY

Flemish Library for Audio Books and Braille Books

Innovation, convergence and exchangeThe Flemish Library for Audio Books and Braille Books (Luisterpunt) for people with print disabilities wants to increase the size and quality of their collection through● collaborative innovation with production centers, developers and readers● convergence between Braille and DAISY production● the use of formats that can be exchanged with other libraries

To achieve these goals the library and production centers Blindenzorg Licht en Liefde and Progebraille Helen Keller recently initiated a new production method with OpenOffice.org Writer and the open-source extensions odt2braille and odt2daisy.

The new method enables ● more efficient production by using the same text file from Writer as a source for both Braille and DAISY● the use of 'styles' in modern text formatting tools for creating accessible documents

Odt2daisyDAISY or Digital Accessible Information System is an international standard for digital talking books

The odt2daisy extension enables users to● convert text from Writer into DAISY with synthetic speech and highlighting of on-screen text● convert text from Writer into a DAISY source-file for production of various accessible materials such as studiobooks with human voice, large-print books and other formats● exchange DAISY versions of our books with the Netherlands

AcknowledgmentsOdt2braille and odt2daisy have been carried out as part of the ÆGIS project (Open Accessibility Everywhere: Ground-work, Infrastructure, Standards). The library wishes to thank Bert Frees, Christophe Strobbe and Jan Engelen from the DOCARCH KULeuven group, our colleagues from the production centers Blindenzorg Licht en Liefde and Progebraille Helen Keller and our readers for their continuous efforts.

Odt2brailleThe odt2braille extension enables users to● convert text from Writer into Braille BRF files● link a regular style for paragraphs, headers, pages and characters to a Braille-specific style ● automatically split up the ODF based text file into multiple volumes (Braille books are much bigger than regular books)● automatically add volume information at the beginning of every volume● create a table of content with Braille pagenumbers● convert tables and graphs into Braille-specific representations of structured data
