TheCombustionEFRCseeksoutstandingapplicantsforthepositionofpostdoctoralresearchassociatetoperformresearchatCornellUniversityandSandiaNationalLaboratoriesonadvancedsimulationsofturbulentcombustion.
Theproject involvestwosimulationmethodologies:directnumericalsimulation (DNS);and largeeddysimulation(LES)usingthefiltereddensityfunction(FDF)approach.DNSinvolvesminimalmodeling, butis restricted (by computational capabilities) to simple geometries and a moderate ranges of scales.LES/FDF involvesmoreextensivemodeling (and, therefore, uncertainty),but isapplicable topracticaldevicessuchas internalcombustionengines. Thegoalof theproject is toassessand to improve thecapabilitiesofLES/FDFbymakingdetailedcomparisonswithDNSofthesameflames.Theperformanceof the LES/FDFwillbe assessed via aposteriori comparisonswithDNS in turbulent lifted jet flames, premixedandstratifiedjetflames, andfuturesimulationsfocusingonbiofuelsfortransportationunderengineconditions(performedatSandiainarelatedEFRCproject).
