The University of Queensland’s School of Journalism and Communication is delighted to showcase the talent and creativity of students enrolled in COMU 1999 Introduction to Visual Communication.
Postcards 2013 celebrates the creative outputs of students from our introductory course on visual story telling. Emphasizing action research methodologies in ‘hands-on’ studio workshops, COMU 1999 provides creative spaces for students to critically YLÅLJ[�VU�[OL�VWWVY[\UP[PLZ�and challenges involved in constructing narrative meaning through visual means.
The portfolio based assess-ment reveals students’ creative and critical development over [OL�ZLTLZ[LY�VM�Z[\K`"�ÄYTS`�embedding the principles of visual practice that are later L_WHUKLK�HUK�YLÄULK�PU�IV[O�the Journalism and the Communication streams of our programs.

Last year, the School launched the Postcard series to reward students and staff for the outstanding achievements and to highlight the importance and value of visual mastery to contemporary communication.
Each story presented in this series reveals every day events and objects through a new lens. The fresh insights of these talented communicators highlight the beauty, mystery and often overlooked stories of our daily life.
This year, the school is proud to introduce Postcards 2013 as a celebration of the hard work, creativity and thoughtfulness of students and staff involved in COMU 1999 — a truly inspiring insight into everyday life.

The image was taken from a piece I did on the tranquility that can be found in solitude. Essentially I tried to relate it to how this is pertinent in childhood, and the innocence that comes with solitude at this time in life.

At school everyone seemed to have a vendetta against crows, yet I loved them. I was enthralled by their capacity for intelligence and determination of spirit. Taking this photo was an absurdly peaceful experience and I wanted the audience to share in this through my image.

My photographic series focused on gentlemen seeking a traditional men’s barbering experience, a manly experience that still exists in our modern age. ;OLYL�HYL�VSK�ZJOVVS�IHYILYZ�JHWHISL�VM�M\SÄSSPUN�their needs with the aroma of peppermint oils, hot towels, and the fact that their hair will be in good, experienced hands.

This image is part of a project that aimed to create an eerie, haunted mood in telling the story of my backyard and its sordid past. The project was shot entirely in black and white, using light, shadows and various textures to create a narrative aesthetically.

Warehouses are full, but at the same time very empty. Warehouse gives insight into the life of a warehouse worker. The series highlights the loneliness, emptiness and repetition of this kind of work. Boxes reoccur throughout the series on a mass scale to exemplify this monotony.

ELLEN LIMERICK
The topic of my story is the life of a retired University Professor. I want my audience to feel happiness, and positivity; and for my story to inspire elderly audiences to live happily and younger audiences to feel optimistic about their future as they age. I have used warm, diffused light, particularly early morning and late afternoon sunlight, to convey feelings of nostalgia and allude to the man’s joyful life.
