Gallery carpark completed Refugee film screeningConstruction of a carpark and additional on-street parking on Mistral Road was completed by Council last month to accommodate visitors to Tweed Regional Gallery.

The car park has spaces for 27 cars and an additional five undefined parking spaces on the street between the carpark and the gallery.

In addition, a dedicated footpath links the new carpark to the gallery.Gates will be installed at the entrance and exit of the carpark to prevent

overnight parking, hooning and other anti-social behaviour. A garden bed facing Mistral Road will soon be planted with screen plants to provide a green buffer between the carpark and local residents.

The project cost $78,000.

The Mistral Road carpark provides secure off-street parking for gallery visitors.

The Tweed’s declaration as a Refugee Welcome Zone will be formalised at a free public screening of the documentary Mary Meets Mohammad, at The Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah on 7 February.

The matinee screening will include an official signing of the Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration, as the Tweed joins the Lismore City, Coffs Harbour City and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils in aligning with the Refuge Council of Australia initiative.

Entry will be free to the 2pm screening of the feature-length film, which tells the story of Tasmania’s first detention centre and the bond that formed between local Christian woman Mary and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad.

A meeting of Tweed Shire Council in September resolved to join the Refugee Council of Australia initiative and declare the Tweed a Refugee Welcome Zone.

Welcoming back RazorbackA free community breakfast will be held at Tom Beatson Outlook this Friday at 7.30am (NSW time), to celebrate the popular Tweed Heads park’s reopening following its upgrade late last year.

The refurbishment included construction of new safety railing along the walkway up to the outlook, as well as a minor facelift for its shelters, tables and seating. The outlook, commonly known as Razorback, was closed in April 2015 because of safety concerns about the existing railing, and reopened to the public in time for Christmas.

“While people have been enjoying renewed access to the outlook during the holiday period, we wanted to have a community celebration because of Razorback’s importance to so many people,” Council’s Director Community and Natural Resources, Tracey Stinson, said.

“Community consultation during the outlook’s closure showed how many people regularly visit Razorback for recreation, to show visitors to the area or for major milestones in their lives.

“A special breakfast seemed the best option for the celebration because the outlook is a popular destination for a lot of people on their morning walks.

“We’re also inviting people who have never been to Tom Beatson Outlook to come along and see why Razorback means so much to so many people,” she said.

“Importantly, Friday’s celebration will recognise Razorback’s great significance to Aboriginal culture.”

Council’s first Sustainability and Environment e-Newsletter is now available at at www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/eNewsletters, allowing residents of the Tweed to read more about what they like, when they like.

Corflute signs created by students of Fingal Head and Bogangar Public Schools are now out and about warning keen beachgoers of the endangered birds.

Residents are also reminded to stay a fair distance away, stay close to the water’s edge when walking or jogging and away from soft sand where they nest and hatch, and to keep their dogs on leashes.

Blackspot roundabout constructionCouncil construction crews will start work next month to build a single-lane roundabout at the corner of Gollan Drive and Lakes Drive, Tweed Heads West.

The $223,000 project is funded under the Australian Government Black Spot Program and designed to reduce the incidence of crashes at the intersection and improve traffic flow. Ten crashes were recorded at the intersection during the past five years, including four injury crashes. In 70 per cent of crashes, a driver has failed to give way to the right.

To accommodate the roundabout, the bus stop on Gollan Drive at the top of the T-intersection will be relocated approximately 65 metres south to Clarrie Englert Park.

During the planned seven-week construction, all traffic lanes will remain open under the direction of stop / slow flagmen. The speed limit through the work site will be reduced to 40km/h. Motorists should expect minor delays.
