At the request of the South DakotaDepartment of Veterans Affairs, Gov-ernor Kristi Noem has proclaimedJune 27, 2020, as “Post-TraumaticStress Injury Awareness Day,” a dayto reflect on the causes, symptomsand treatment of post- traumaticstress injuries.“The brave men and women of the

United States Armed Forces whoproudly serve the United States andrisk their lives to protect our freedomdeserve the investment of every pos-sible resource to ensure their lastingphysical, mental, and emotional well-being,” the Governor’s proclamationstates.PTSI, which is commonly known

as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is

a normal reaction to abnormal cir-cumstances and affects more than 5million Americans each year. It ismost commonly associated with vet-erans – and has been known by manyother terms, including shell shockand combat fatigue – but PTSI canaffect anyone at any age.“Our veterans face many life-

changing and dangerous situationswhen they put their lives on the linein defense of our nation’s freedoms,”said Greg Whitlock, Secretary of theSouth Dakota Department of Veter-ans Affairs. “Raising awareness ofPTSI is an important step in ensuringveterans have the support they needto make a successful transition backto civilian life. This will help with in-

creased understanding of unseenemotional struggles resulting fromPTSI and is critical to the health andwell-being of our returning heroes.”It is estimated that between 11 and

20 percent of veterans experiencesymptoms of PTSI, including up to20 percent of Iraq and Afghanistanveterans. “Every veteran processes their

military experiences differently, butfor those that are experiencing night-mares, flashbacks, irritability or othersymptoms of PTSI, help is avail-able,” said Whitlock. “Specializedtreatment for PTSI is availablethrough the U.S. Department of Vet-erans Affairs athttps://www.ptsd.va.gov/.”
