So we have to work with that.” He adds that the legislation allows for councils to create a policy to invoke their own rules, but believes it will be a lengthy process. “The policy for Auckland has to be regional for all of the council area and it would not be tenable for 21 variations. “So we have to be realistic as to how we can achieve the best result which is, preferably for the community, nobody selling - but more likely one licensed seller. “The legislation, once finalised through the regulations will mean the stores are bound by strict rules to remove the ability of the selling through sneaky means. “They will basically have to sell only these products and have age restriction which should in our area make it a dubious business case in regard to viability.” Andy Baker believes the current Frank- lin Board position would be that to achieve regional coverage the sales need to be re- stricted to large centres and then apply rules regarding proximity to sensitive sites and competing businesses, as well as adopting a sinking lid policy so if Franklin’s one shop ceases to trade, it cannot be replaced by an- other licensed shop. The local board hopes that the regulations will achieve what the community wants and will minimise the potential harm caused by the sale of legal highs. The Franklin Local Board and the Waikato District Council are working to come up with local responses to governmental legislation on the sale of synthetic cannabis and other legal highs.

The Local Board says it, along with the other southern local boards, is seeking to en-courage the Ministry of Health to introduce strict regulations around the sale of the prod-ucts.

The board has developed a position paper to express their view on how to minimise harm and where the products can be sold.

Local board chair Andy Baker says he wants to see appropriate tools to regulate and con-trol where these substances can be sold.

“The board’s view is that retailers should only be located in town centres or larger ur-ban areas. For Franklin, this would mean they can only be sold in the Pukekohe town centre and not smaller settlements.

Andy Baker says currently “the legislation allows for businesses to get licenses to sell the stuff and the lawmakers decided that was

better than prohibition which would certain-ly drive it underground just like other drugs. So we have to work with that.”

He adds that the legislation allows for councils to create a policy to invoke their own rules, but believes it will be a lengthy process.

“They will basically have to sell only these products and have age restriction which should in our area make it a dubious business case in regard to viability.”

Andy Baker believes the current Frank-lin Board position would be that to achieve regional coverage the sales need to be re-stricted to large centres and then apply rules regarding proximity to sensitive sites and competing businesses, as well as adopting a sinking lid policy so if Franklin’s one shop

ceases to trade, it cannot be replaced by an-other licensed shop.

The local board hopes that the regulations will achieve what the community wants and will minimise the potential harm caused by the sale of legal highs.

Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candle-light, dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.

Prayer is the link that connects us with Christ; or, as the song goes, ‘Prayer is the Key to Heaven, but Faith unlocks the door.’ Few realize the mighty power there is in the prayer of Faith. Prayer can and does move mountains. Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed; but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to Jesus in Heaven, and he will present it perfectly to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of his own perfection.

VIEWS & OPINIONS

As much as I think Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutch-ison has done a pretty good job in his electorate over the years, he either didn’t understand the result of the Psychoactive Substances Bill, or he was led astray by his advisors in terms of what the Bill would actually achieve.

While it provides a regulatory framework of sorts for the sale of ‘legal highs’, it fails to ad-dress the very issue that local communities have campaigned for - the ability to keep the products away from their young people.

Dr Paul stated quite clearly that if a commu-nity didn’t want it, they could say ‘NO’ and their council could back that up.

That’s not quite the situation now though. Both the Waikato District Council and the

Franklin Local Board are asking for feedback on policies over the sale of the products. They say they can not ban the sale of them, but can only provide a policy over where they can be sold.

Many local representatives will tell you they want to protect the community from the effects of the products, variants of which have seen lo-cal young people hospitalised, and worse.

The Franklin Local Board’s option appears to be to have it available for sale in Pukekohe, but not in smaller communities. Essentially, they are saying, ‘to keep this product away from the vul-nerable, we will only make it available in the area with the highest population!’

If they really wanted to echo the views of their community, and if they truly can not, un-der law, ban it from our district, then why not make it available from, say, any approved busi-ness within 200m of the Manukau Heads. That would satisfy the law, ensure it was away from schools, and at least in part, manage to satisfy the communities who have been led down the garden path about how much say they have in their towns.

Where is community voice over high-risk offenders?

Hi, I hope everyone has been enjoying the weath-er over the past couple of weeks. Long may it last.

A 64 year old male was processed for drink driving. He did not stop in time and drove into a local shop. The drink drive limit is 400.

A 24 year old male was driving erratically and al-most drove into the side of a Police vehicle.

On being stopped he be-came aggressive and as a result for about an hour ended up having very sore eyes. Pepper spray tends to do this to you! He is very well versed in drink driving, and now faces driving whilst dis-qualified and resisting Police charges as well. His level was 864.

If you do not have a li-cence and drive, then a ticket which says you are forbidden to drive, is exactly that.

Hard as it may be to un-derstand, that means you can’t drive until you have a li-cence. There have been a few rocket scientists out there that have had their vehicles impounded, or other peo-ple’s vehicles impounded for driving.

Unfortunately if you lend your car to someone, as the owner, you are deemed to know the status of the drivers licence, as you should have checked in the first place.

We have had five people in the last week that are now forbidden to drive; we will keep our eye on you to en-

I was alarmed to read that the Department of Correc-tions were looking to house a convicted sex offender in Waiuku (Post, 4, February, p. 1).

As a grandmother of seven beautiful mokopuna, six of whom live in Waiuku, I feel very strongly that our com-munity should not support any initiative to house con-victed sex-offenders - re-gardless of GPS technology.

Waiuku is a beautiful, whanau/family-centred community and I do not wel-come it becoming a reloca-tion space for convicted sex-

offenders. The Department of Cor-

rections, in a personal tel-ephone conversation today, informed me that Waiuku was one area among many that they have considered in their re-housing investi-gations. However, they con-fidently stated that they are NOT considering Waiuku at this point. Reasons cited included the safety and pro-tection of the offender. My question is, why can’t our community be consulted when these decisions are be-ing considered?

Why do I have to read

about this issue in the news-paper? Currently, when there is a need to house a con-victed paedophile (be them predatory or inter-familial abusers) the policy to notify the community is at the dis-cretion of the Department of Correction in consultation with CYFs, police and proba-tion staff.

I think our community should all be consulted at every stage as these re-housing decisions affect us. Where is our voice in this?

The Waiuku Police are holding the following items. found in:

November: Child’s Spider-man Bike, Matai Street.

Horses-head tie pin, gold, found in Sandspit Road.

January: Guitar, found corner of Mellsop Ave and Queen Street. Silver bracelet, Greenstone heart-shaped pendant, silver ring with a white stone, and silver neck-lace links, a ladies gold wed-ding band with inlaid silver, a silver and gold band, and a silver earring with red stones, all found at or near Waiuku New World. A white cellphone was found at the Sandspit Walkway.

sure you don’t drive. Any vehicle that you are

driving will be impounded. Try walking instead.

Sometimes we do enquir-ies at addresses looking for people.

One such enquiry was done where the male was not there. Two cannabis plants were located. The owner of the house was dealt with for having these plants.

It would be in the interests of Rewi Parata to either come down to the Police station, or make a voluntary Court appearance for having war-rants outstanding against him. It saves spending the night at ‘Hotel Manukau’.

Remember if there is an offender present, or has just left, then ring 111.

This is the quickest way to get Police attendance.

Although appreciation must be given to the fact that there could be other jobs waiting for Police attend-

ance as well. It is vital to let us know as soon as possible. Three days later is just a little bit too late.

Police are still concentrat-ing on burglaries and traffic offending.

This includes intersec-tions, drink driving, speed, using a cellphone and not wearing your seatbelt. As I have previously stated, try to use your vehicle with the least amount of hassles.

Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-nz.org.

That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku.

Law For Change Waikato is running a workshop at the Tuakau Hotel on Thursday 13 February (4-8 pm) to help locals put together a submis-sion on the Waikato District’s draft bylaw on psychoactive substances. Law For Change Waikato is a group of Waikato University law students who want to help bridge the gap between law and the people. They will inform you of the

facts about the government’s Psychoactive Substance Act and the local bylaw that is being formulated at the mo-ment. Anyone who wants to know more or would like help with their submission is welcome to attend this work-shop.

People have until next Monday 17 February to have their say on where psycho-active substances should be

sold in the Waikato district. The consultation is part

of Waikato District Council’s proposed psychoactive sub-stances policy

Waikato district Mayor Al-lan Sanson said Council is completely against the sale of these substances but as the government has not cre-ated a law against them, hav-ing a strong policy in place is the only tool available.

Mayor Len Brown has made a short state-ment after agreeing to contribute around 16% of the quarter of million dollars in costs associated with investigating his activities after revelations of his affair last year.

Following publication of the EY report last year, Auckland Council’s Governing Body agreed that a group of councillors compris-ing Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse, Christine Fletcher, George Wood, Dick Quax and Pen-ny Webster would hold confidential discus-sions with the Mayor to agree a financial contribution from him towards the final cost of the report.

Speaking on behalf of the group of coun-cillors, Christine Fletcher, Chair of the CEO Review Committee said:

“Following discussions with the Mayor through Chief Executive Stephen Town, there

has been a full and final agreement that he will make a contribution of $40,000 towards the final cost of the EY report.

“This is in addition to the Mayor meeting his own legal costs of $20,000.

“In the interests of open process and the public interest, we are releasing these num-bers.”

Auckland Council Chief Executive Stephen Town confirmed the cost of the EY report and legal work was approximately $250,000.

Mayor Len Brown says: “I have agreed to make this payment out of respect to my fel-low Councillors and to acknowledge the up-set this issue has caused.

“I continue to be totally focussed on the is-sues that matter to Aucklanders.

“I do not intend to make any further com-ment on this matter.”

Linda Blain, of Waiuku business ‘Jacaranda’ says customers to the area are being forced to either park a distance away, or take their business elsewhere, as local business owners and staff take shoppers’ carparks and leave the vehicles there all day. While this has histori-cally been a problem, it was slightly solved with the ar-rival of parking wardens and one-hour parking limits, but

the recent Waiuku rounda-bout construction has seen many businesses using the former New World carpark to park in.

Both Linda, and Waiuku Business and Development Association secretary Fiona Baker say this is an ongo-ing problem, and it could be simply fixed if long-term parkers used the section of the carparks at the back of the old store, instead of near

the roadside.Fiona says the blocking-off

of the lower part of Queen Street has made it even more difficult, and she points out that if the shoppers’ needs are not looked after, there will be even less business in the town for the very retailers who are taking up the car-parks. It is believed the issue will be raised at the forth-coming WB&DA mix and mingle at Cocky’s Corner.

Concerns have been raised by some emergency services personnel over ‘idiotic’ be-haviour of people around Waiuku who have been re-moving road cones, disman-tling warning barriers and arranging cones on other roads near the Waiuku town centre roadworks in recent days.

There have also been re-

ports that some people have been arranging cones to block the fire station, and this has come at the same time as a spate of false alarms, lead-ing people to believe the two incidents are connected.

Volunteer Fire Officers travelling to the fire station on callouts have found their way blocked by cones.

It is believed police are in-

volved in tracing those who have been making the false calls, and CCTV footage is being investigated to appre-hend those responsible for moving the cones.

People who are identi-fied as deliberately moving cones, as a result of which an accident is caused, could face serious charges if con-victed.

Billy Torpey, who is a firefighter at Awhitu Rural Fire Force, has been selected in about a 40-strong crew of fire-fighters who flew out last week to help fight wild-fires in Australia.

Former Principal Ru-ral Fire Officer, and now Chairman of the Local Board, Andy Baker says

he believes it is the first time in a very long time, if not ever, that a fire fighter from the Franklin area has been selected in one of these teams and he adds they are usually hand-picked for their ability, durability and attitude.

The team are helping their Australian mates fighting fires near Mt El-

“This is really good for Billy and the rest of the team at Awhitu,” Andy says, “be-cause it shows that the train-ing and effort they put in is recognised at a national and international level.

“I was discussing it the other day with Bryan Cartelle who is Principal Rural Fire Officer for Auckland and he said Billy deserved his spot on the team selected from across New Zealand and had impressed people with how he went about things.”

A prolonged spell of dry warm weather, and an increase in average temperatures, has prompted Waikato District, Waipa Dis-trict and Hamilton City Councils to move to Water Alert Level 2 effective from last week.

This means sprinklers and watering sys-tems can only be used on alternative days - (e.g. even street numbers on even days; odd street numbers on odd days) between 6- 8am and 6- 8pm, while hand held hosing can be used any time.

Hamilton City Council City Waters Man-ager Andrew Parsons says they’ve seen a sus-tained increase in water consumption over recent weeks.

“When making the decision to increase our water alert levels we take a number of factors into consideration, including in-creased temperatures, rain forecasts as well as our infrastructure’s ability to treat and dis-tribute water.”

“While we have seen showers indicated

in the long range forecast, we would need a sustained period of rain to keep us at Water Alert Level 1 which is why we have made the decision to move to Level 2.”

Waipa District Council Manager Water Services Lorraine Kendrick says the step up to the next water alert level is about taking a cautious approach for a long-term, region wide solution. “Although the ten day weath-er forecast is for rain it’s likely we’ll only get light showers and that only provides short term relief. We would need sustained rainfall over a period of days to alleviate our long-term concerns.”

Waikato District Council Chief Execu-tive, Gavin Ion says their community is fully aware of the need to be smart with their wa-ter use.

“It’s not hard to understand the need to be conservative about water use when you take a drive through the countryside. It’s very dry and brown.”

The event is part of the 2014 BDO Challenge, a seven day journey of close to 900km as cyclists ride from Wellington to the finish at Pukekohe. The Challenge started on Sunday, and a number of high-profile rid-ers will join the 150-plus rid-ers at various stages of the event, with Tamaki MP Si-mon O’Connor riding the leg from Glen Murray to Puke-kohe this Saturday.

The brainchild of former Olympic and Common-wealth cyclist Stephen Cox and his Dynamo Events team, the BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge is not an elite event; it is an op-portunity for people from all backgrounds and all walks of life to share their passion of bike riding.

Pharmacists, retirees, company owners, school teachers, broadcasters, goat farmers, construction work-ers – you name it and they will be there rubbing shoul-ders and sharing stories on the road as they follow a path once taken by the very best in the world in the days of the famous Dulux Tour.

MSNZ National Coordina-tor Amanda Keefe says par-ticipants in the 2014 BDO Challenge will be directly helping the more than 3000 New Zealanders diagnosed with the condition, as well as their families and carers.

“While scientists continue to search for a cure funds re-ceived through the generos-ity of this year’s participants and supporters will go a long way to help us provide the best support education and information to help those touched by the condition.”

Also on the ride is Andrew Dewhurst who has close ties to the Franklin region through family connections. Broadcaster and company director Andrew Dewhurst will ride his second BDO Challenge, returning after describing last year as a ‘life changing’ experience. An-drew will post daily blogs from the BDO and on Friday make the drive to Auckland after stage 11 into Te Awa-mutu to act as game night MC at the Skycity Breakers before driving back to Ham-ilton to complete the BDO the next morning.

Waikato Mayor Allan San-son says there are a number of challenges facing young people in the district, and is asking for community com-ment on legal highs.

The Psychoactive Sub-stances Act 2013 (the Act), passed by Government, al-lows for community input into where retailers of ‘legal highs’ may be located.

“What we are talking about here are addictive, mind-altering substances that can and do have fatal results, so Council is seeking your in-put into Waikato District’s response to this Act.

“Our Draft Psychoactive Substances Policy 2014 pro-poses restricting retailers of legal highs to the business zones of our towns, as well as separation distances be-tween approved retailers and sensitive sites, i.e. our schools and early childhood centres.

Auckland Council is calling for applica-tions for three advisory panels covering Eth-nic Peoples, Pacific Peoples, and Seniors.

The panels are designed to provide the council with strategic “big picture” advice on issues important to diverse groups, helping the council to engage effectively with com-munities.

The council is seeking applicants who have good knowledge of their communities, and are across emerging trends, challenges

and opportunities, and have experience with governance and advisory roles. Appli-cants also need a broad perspective on the future direction of Auckland as envisioned in the Auckland Plan, the council’s defining blueprint for managing growth and change in the city.

Application forms are available online or from libraries and council service centres from 7 February 2014. Applications close on 20 February, 2014.

Mayor asks for community tospeak on legal highs

Advisory panel applications open

“We owe it to our com-munity to be united in our approach, so please get your views and submissions to us by 4.00pm on Tuesday 17 February,” he says.

Mayor Sanson also says the

recent launch of the Waikato District Youth Action Plan, - the result of a Ministry of So-cial Development lead Social Sector Trial (SST) – was the culmination of six month’s consultation with local com-munities about what needs to be done to get better out-comes for young people.

“While it is a privilege to be chair of the SST’s Advi-sory Group, of greater im-portance to me as Mayor is to see us thinking differently about our young people, engaging with them and in-volving them in their future.

“The Action Plan is the roadmap of our collective youth and community voice. It’s an opportunity to co-or-dinate and target resources to support our rangitahi.

“It’s now up to us to work together with Project Lead, Kodi Hapi, to breathe life into this document and make it happen.

that can and do have fatal results...”

7 THE POST NEWSPAPER, FEBRUARY 7, 2014

At about 7am on Friday morning Police from Counties Manukau CIB executed a search warrant on a property in Tuakau in relation to a bank robbery and bomb hoax incident at BNZ on Ronwood Ave, Manukau on 24 January.

A 46 year old man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and culti-vating cannabis.

A number of nominations for this man came from publicity generated through the distribution of CCTV footage of the man in the bank and in a taxi fleeing the scene to Otara, including a nomination all the way from Australia.

“We’d like to thank the media and the public for distributing the footage widely, ensuring a positive identification of this of-

fender,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Ellwood. “Following the incident our District Command Centre, intelligence unit and CIB worked together to quickly establish some leads on the suspect, but it was with the as-sistance of the public that we were able to ensure he was identified and apprehended.”

Following the incident, the man was tracked by CCTV getting into another taxi from Otara and headed to Tuakau, where he lives.

The NZDF bomb squad was required at the scene on 24 January, along with Police, fire service and ambulance. The bank and surrounding businesses were evacuated and Ronwood Ave closed to traffic, causing significant disruption in the area. The bomb was established to be an elaborate hoax.

The work of talented Franklin mouth painter Grant Sharman has been chosen to feature on a World of Animals Memory Game – part of a new range of MFPA products designed to appeal to a younger generation.

Simon Jackson, MFPA’s Asia Pacific Manager, says traditionally their products have appealed to an older audience.

“We still sell a lot of cards and calendars, but recently we’ve increased the range to include children’s puzzles, games and playing cards. Our new products have been proving to be very popu-lar – often with our existing customers buying for their children or grandchildren,” he says.

The 2014 range of MFPA products includes a World of Animals jigsaw puzzle, a boxed towel gift set, and large serving mats to match the existing placemats and coasters already available.

Grant’s contribution to the memory game product is a painting of a teddy bear with a blue bow tie.

The set features 27 pairs of different images of animals and birds.

Grant began painting after an injury in a school rugby match at 15 left him a tetra-plegic in 1977, becoming a full member of the MFPA in 1988.

He especially loves paint-

The prospect of the safest ‘blue’ seat in Parliament, and an almost-certain seat in Parliament, has seen a number of prospective candidates from outside the area seeking selection as the Hunua National Party candidate. Sitting MP Dr Paul Hutchison, who had the largest majority in Parliament, announced last year he would be stepping down, which has seen plenty of interest in the candidacy.

The latest pinning his hopes on the spot is Auckland banker Seby Reeves, who lives in Auckland with his wife Julie and young son.

Born in Wellington, Mr Reeves attended Scots College where he became Deputy Head Boy and Captain of the 1st XV. He has degrees in Law and Commerce from Victoria and Otago Universities.

Between 2006 and 2011, Mr Reeves and his wife lived in London where he was a senior lawyer for a large interna-tional law firm and HSBC’s investment banking division. Mr Reeves is currently a Manager in ANZ’s Commercial & Agri banking division.

Mr Reeves is the son of former National MP Graeme Reeves and has been active in the National Party for sev-eral years including being a member of the National Par-ty’s Candidate College.

Above: David Smith, (Waiuku Division’s first Grand Prior Award recipient), presents the award to Lucy Croft (left) and Tegan Thomas.

Waiuku St John are heading into 2014 with confidence after what they describe as an ‘amazing’ 2013 with a number of historic ac-complishments. The Waiuku Division won the title of South District Division of the Year, and the competition teams also did well, the Gold Team picking up the novice drill com-petition. The younger cadets had a number of successes at the junior competitions to-wards the end of the year. The Penguin team (six to eight years), were named first in Com-munication, and third aggregate. The Green team (eight to 11 years), were named first in Caregiver and First Aid, while also placed third aggregate and gained the Core Values Trophy.

The Blue Team (11 to 13 years) was third in First Aid.

Individually, there were some very good results, with Lucy Croft and Tegan Thomas completing their Grand Prior Awards. In the history of the Waiuku St John Unit there have only been two other cadets to achieve this award. Waiuku St John says they appreciate the support of the community and look for-ward to continuing to grow as an organisa-tion, with new cadets and youth leaders join-ing for the year ahead.

Great success for St John unit

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Trav-ers’ Mary Poppins, he made them a promise - one that he didn’t real-ize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against an un-compromising writer who has no intention of let-ting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

Auckland Council is proud to support Neighbours Day and help build stronger, safer and happier communities.

Neighbours Day Aotearoa is a nationwide initiative that aims to strengthen communities through acts of neighbourliness.

Last year, a number of neighbourhoods sought financial assistance for small scale community activities to support their Neighbours Day celebrations. Auckland Council is happy to offer the same help this year to support street level initiatives that bring neighbours together.

Water and Grease don’t mix,but crowds brave the rain

It should have been one of the biggest nights in Waiuku, but first drizzle, then steady rain, kept crowd numbers down as the town hosted its first ‘Movies in the Park’ event on Friday night.

Hundreds still braved the inclement conditions to watch the iconic movie ‘Grease’, but many more made the decision to stay home, and a number stuck it out for a while before taking their umbrellas and blankets with them. The spectacular outdoor setting, and a range of activities would have made for a stunning evening, but those who attended were hoping to see the return of the event another time.

Many people showed their appreciation to Auckland Council and the Waiuku Business Association team who brought the event together, and there were still plenty of smiles amid the raindrops as the community gathered together. The prospect is that a future event (weather per-mitting) would be a stunning evening for the town.

60 Year AnniversaryWaiuku Yacht Club.

Feb 15th and 16th, 2014

A massive weekend of sailing, (and chatting about sailing!) is planned for the Waiuku Yacht Club this weekend as it celebrates its 60-year anniversa-ry in style. People with connections to the club are invited to make contact to attend the events, as well as a bar-becue meal and anniversary social event on the Friday night. Anyone in-terested in booking for the functions is asked to phone 235 8714 for further details.

The Waiuku Yacht club was formed 12th November 1953. It was called the Franklin Yacht Club to distinguish it from the existing Franklin Boating Club which catered mainly for mo-torboats.

At the first meeting, held in James-field’s rooms, 25 young men of the dis-trict decided to encourage new mem-bers to obtain an 11’ 8” yacht which

60 years of history for local yachties

was being promoted by the RNZF Hobsonville Club. This yacht could compete with Zeddies and Idle Alongs and could be put in the water for about 20 pounds.

The club’s intention was to hold fortnightly races and on the first race day, 28th November 1953, about nine boats of all classes ranging from 7’ 6” to 18’ took part.

The following year the name of the club was changed to the present. The first clubhouse was built en-tirely by voluntary labour, supervised by R Collie, dur-ing September and October 1955. The 18’ x 12’ clubhouse was used for storing gear and sails and as a base for sup-plying crews with hot cups of teas. Power was beyond the club’s finances in those early days and water was boiled on a kerosene stove!

Since those early days, the club has developed into a thriving hub of the sailing community, with extended and re-developed club-rooms, and now a host of young sailors in the ‘Learn to Sail’ programme, plus safety

boats and training craft in a variety of sizes.

The celebrations for the weekend commence with a series of Hartley 16 races, with a cake cutting at 11am before the race start, then a social function in the after-noon and evening.

The Sunday sees the club hosting the much-respected Manukau Regatta as part of the Volvo National Sailing and Boating Day.

As long-time member Alan Dawson says, it’s been a while since the Manukau Shield hung in the Waiuku clubrooms, and the nail is still there waiting for its re-turn!

This event will feature a large number of craft in a va-riety of sizes, and should be a true spectacle on the wa-ter for the viewing public, as well as providing some stiff competition from the clubs that surround the Manukau Harbour.

The club extends an invi-tation to visit on the Sunday, watch some great sailing, and be part of the 60-year celebrations.

Paul Petersen is the new Prin-cipal of Bombay School, and his wife Kirsty has penned a profile of the new lead-er of the rural school for their school newslet-ter.

“Both of my children will be starting at Bom-bay School this year; we have just moved to the area. As their mother, I asked myself what would I want to know about this new Principal, and realised that more than anything else, I would want to know what he’s like, and what my kids and I could expect from him,” she writes.

“ Then I figured that if I want to know that, then other mums (and dads) will probably want to know that too.

“He’s a husband and father first and foremost. He loves lit-tle more than going camping, sleeping in on Saturday morn-ings, and having a good strong cup of coffee (flat-white with one - if you’re looking to melt his heart).”

The couple have two children, Campbell (7) and Liam (4), and Paul was born in South Africa before moving to New Zealand in the 1990s.

Before becoming a Principal, he held a number of teaching

positions across the country. He has worked in large

schools, small schools, high and low decile schools, rural and suburban schools - eve-rything on the spectrum.

“He’s incred-ibly dedicated and passionate about educa-tion,” Kirsty says.

“He sees each student as an individual, with their own indi-vidual needs and challenges. He is not one to sit in an ivory tower, you will find him on the floor and involved. He will

not only learn the names of your children, he will take the time to learn about them.”

Paul’s most recent post was in Wanganui, where he was the Principal at a school called Carl-ton for five years.

Kirsty says “I am very proud personally of Carlton, it is a decile 2 community, with the look, feel and student achieve-ments of a school in a much better position. I credit not only Paul, but his whole team for that turn around.”

Finally, on a humourous note, Kirsty says “He likes to have a laugh, but don’t ask him about the rugby! The Boks always lose to the All Blacks — and that’s enough to wipe the smile off his face, but not mine!”

Mayor Len Brown says 2014 will be a ‘bumper’ year for building consents in Auckland, with ap-provals for around 7000 new homes expected in the 2013/14 year, twice the total for 2011/12.

Speaking at an event to mark the start of con-struction of an apartment development, Len Brown said:

“It’s clear that we are entering a growth phase for Auckland home building. Over the next few years Aucklanders will see a lot more building ac-tivity across the region, with a good mix of apart-ments, terraced houses and stand alone houses.

“This boost in residential construction has been helped by strong economic growth, greater certainty for developers and improvements to the council’s consenting processes.

“I have been really impressed by the work of our consenting teams. Although volumes are much higher than previous years, the building and resource consent teams have continued to perform at 95 per cent at least, of consents pro-cessed within statutory timeframes.”

Highlights include:• More than 6300 building consents were

granted last year in Auckland, up 38 per cent on the previous year and double the year before.

• Resource consents continue to increase – up from 12,000 in 2011/2012, 13,000 in 2012/2013 and at the current growth, expected to increase to 14,000+ in 2013/2014.

• The resource consents issued will result in a significant increase in new dwellings over the next years with more than 20,000 new lots ap-proved as part of resource consents issued in the last six months.

• Apartments are becoming a larger proportion of new homes - in December alone in Auckland consents were granted for 397 new apartments. (Over the last six months, consents for 1918 new apartments were granted.)

The children from First Steps Waiuku Toddler room have been very excited with the opening of their brand new playground recently.

It has been a complete re-vamp for the whole outdoor area, and the open-air facil-ity now features rock climb-ing walls, bike tracks, slides, grass and plenty more to keep young minds and bod-

ies entertained. The centre says it has had

“some wonderful feedback from the parents and also the school age siblings who come in to pick up their sis-ter or brother and they do not want to leave, as they enjoy it so much!”

Staff say the children have all been very engaged and challenged by the new play-

ground.One of the favourite activi-

ties is the climbing wall; the children love using their up-per body strength and prob-lem solving skills to make their way successfully to the top of the wall.

First Steps encourages lo-cal parents to call in to the centre and let their toddlers try out the new play area.

Local youngsters have the chance to paint their own warship on Sunday, Febru-ary 23, as part of a series of free activities run by the Navy Museum at Torpedo

Bay, Devonport.The Museum will host

a series of free activities, from 11am to 3pm centred around the historical con-cept of dazzle paint used on

military ships during World Wars I and II. Visitors will be able to dazzle their own ships and create a unique and colourful fleet.

Before the 20th century, ships were painted with dec-orative designs.

They were commonly painted black with red, white and gold accents.

Dazzle paint was devel-oped by the artist Norman Wilkinson and used during the First and Second World Wars to confuse the eyes of the enemy.

Angular lines were used to make the work of a range finder difficult. Funnels and gun turrets positioned near each other would be painted in contrast to make it diffi-cult to recognise a ship by its profile.

Harking back to this tra-dition of dazzling ships, Torpedo Bay Navy Museum recently invited renowned New Zealand artist John Reynolds to dazzle paint a large 2.5-metre cut-out of an Anzac frigate.

He was joined by the ships’ companies of the current fleet of Royal New Zealand Navy ships, who each paint-ed similar cut-outs of their own vessels.

A Navy spokesperson said “Come along and view the ‘Dazzle Fleet’, or dazzle a cardboard cut-out of a naval ship (materials will be sup-plied) with your own unique design to add to the Dazzle Fleet.”

Members of the Horseless Carriage Club of New Zea-land were hosted for a lunch at the Waiuku Golf Club on Sunday, and the carpark was decorated with some of the oldest working vehicles seen on New Zealand’s roads.

Below right: A 1912 Sun-beam 12/16 leads off a dis-play of vehicles.

Work is well underway on a major roundabout project for the centre of the Waiuku township, but residents can expect delays for several more weeks as work moves from Stage One (illustrated in blue in the map at right), to Stages two and three. The upgrade of the intersections of King Street, Queen Street,

and Constable Road con-sists of the construction of two roundabouts to improve safety and traffic flows.

There will be new foot-paths built around the area, which will also link with the new carpark area behind the Kentish Hotel, and the new toilet block.

The third component of

the upgrade is construction of two separate rain gardens to treat road surface runoff before discharging into the storm water reticulation sys-tem

Contractors say the project is intended to be undertaken in three stages with serious impact on traffic especially during Stages 1 and 2.

The planned completion date of Phase 1 is the 18th of February, before work moves to the Constable Road roundabout, which will im-pact heavily on traffic flows from King Street to Waiuku College.

Residents have been asked to be mindful of the road-works, and where possible, to choose alternate routes during the construction pe-riod.

The organisers of a free classic car show to be held on a private property on the way to Karioitahi Beach think they may have a tiger by the tail in terms of num-bers of exhibitors and spec-tators the event may draw.

Roger Laing, Cliff Brice and Wally Chaplin are the com-mittee of the Kiwi American Car Club, and said yesterday they could have anything up to 300 classic vehicles on dis-play at the Butchers Bridge Road property on Sunday.

“We did it two years ago, without really promoting it, and we had close to 100 cars on display,” Roger said, “but this year, if the weather’s fine, there will be a lot more.”

Already a number of clas-sic and muscle car clubs have confirmed attendance, and there is still opportuni-ties for people with classic vehicles to display them on the day.

“If people want to display the, it would be good if they could arrive before 9.30am,” Cliff said. The free public entry runs from 10am, with

The Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Poker Run will this year be held on Saturday March 15, with a 10am start from the Fire Station at 13 King Street Waiuku.

The event is open to any-one and everyone, in either a car, bikes, or any other (roadworthy) vehicle.

As firefighter Mark Mc-Donagh says: “The idea of the Poker Run is that we have five stops along a sce-nic drive. At each stop, you receive a playing card.

“Once you return back at the station you will have a “poker hand” of six cards in total, from which you can dispose of the worst card.

“The winning “hand” will win the major prize.”

The event offers prizes for first, second and third, and there are a number of spot prizes, giveaways and raf-fles available for entrants to enjoy. Tickets for the Poker Run this year are $35 each,

which includes a dinner, but passengers on the day who don’t want a poker hand, but still wish to attend the din-ner can purchase a separte ticket for $20.

The event commences at 10am with a briefing which will outline the rules, and the run will start at around 10.30am, heading out for a round trip of around 180km through lush farmland and coastal scenery.

“We estimate most peo-ple will be back around 3pm and all hands will have to be in the queue for scoring by 4pm,” Mark says.

Prizegiving will be at 6pm and dinner (which is sheep on a spit), will be from 6.30. There will also be live local entertainment from well-known band ‘Rhythm Ex-press’ from 7pm onwards.

There will be courtesy shuttles running throughout the day and night, to ensure people can enjoy the festivi-

Retail petrol fuel prices fell four cents per litre during January, and diesel six cents, largely reversing December’s increases. The price of 91 octane petrol fell to $2.16 per litre in the main centres, with diesel falling to $1.51 per litre at most service sta-tions.

“Refined fuel commodity prices rose sharply in De-cember, leading to a five and four cent per litre increase in petrol and diesel prices respectively. But come Janu-ary, commodity prices fell while the New Zealand ex-change rate rose 2 cents, reaching a 9-week high,” says AA PetrolWatch spokes-

person Mark Stockdale.Compared to the end of

December, petrol commod-ity prices fell just over four cents per litre. The cost of importing diesel fell nearly six cents per litre.

“While fuel companies have passed on commod-ity price reductions, the im-porter margin for diesel is above average compared to petrol and in the AA’s view, there is room for them to cut diesel pump prices by at least two cents,” Mr Stock-dale added.

families encouraged to pack a picnic, park up and enjoy a wander around the vehi-cles. The Waiuku Lions Club will be operating a sausage sizzle, there’ll be ice-creams and a coffee vendor, and at some stage in the afternoon a vintage bulldozer will drive over (and flatten!) a car.

With six acres of parking

available (plus the offer of a neighbouring property), there should be plenty of room, and Roger says the way to find the show is to head towards Karioitahi Beach and keep an eye out for the bright red 1968 Dodge A100 (pictured above), parked on the corner.

“This area is a great one

for old and classic cars,” says Cliff, whose company Mo-bile Mechanical Repairs, in Waiuku, is the major spon-sor for the day.

Waiuku’s Dr Mark Eustace completed a gruelling Ultramarathon on the weekend as part of his drive to raise funds for a new surf lifesaving facility.

I am happy to report I just made it in the blistering heat to finish the Kauri Run Ultra on Saturday.

The drive to Fletchers Bay at the north-ern tip of the Coromandel was awesome with spectacular views and some hairy gravel roads as we took a detour en route to Port Charles to check out the first transi-tion stop on Friday.

The day started at 4 am with breakfast and a final briefing before the mad few Ul-tra enthusiasts set off at 5.30am as dawn was breaking. The first 10 km along the Co-romandel Walkway was the most stunning scenery and enjoyable running of the day with not too many and not too steep hills and fresh legs and the cool morning air.

From there along Stoney Bay Road to the first Aid station near Port Charles. The next section had some steeper climbs including the descent to Potiki Bay with some enjoy-able bush running.

After crossing some farmland and a few kms on the gravel road we arrived at Wai-kawau Aid station and 38kms into the race still feeling pretty good.

Leaving Waikawau at about 10am the temperatures were rising and the biggest climb of the day began with about 16kms of mostly climbing up till around 500 me-tres at the top of the Coromandel cen-tral divide. Not long into this section the wheels started to fall off and the good pace I had kept up over the first 38kms came back to bite me.

At around the 45km mark I started get-ting the head spins and increasing nausea ending with an inevitable bout of vomiting when I collapsed on the side of the trail.

My fellow competitors were awesome with several of them giving me salt and other supplies but mostly moral support walking with me to the next two check-points. With 17kms to go at the top of the hill I rested at the checkpoint there and af-ter lots of oranges, fluids and Cramp-Stop I started to come right and was able to jog on slowly finally getting to the Kennedy Bay Rd Aid station where Jo (my amazing support person for the whole day) and my good friend Wayne Knight were waiting pa-tiently.

From here Wayne joined me for the final

Christmas Display lights up again

8kms ascent to the highest point of the day at Kaipawa Trig (560metres) before the final 5km descent to Coromandel town and the welcoming finish line.

Thanks to all those who have sponsored me but anyone keen to do so it is not too late with all donations going to the Karioitahi Surf Life Club for their awesome new premises. Dona-tions can be made at the Waiuku branch of the ASB, the Waiuku Post or Waiuku Health Cen-tre, or direct to the Karioitahi Surf Life Club account: ASB (Waiuku) 12-3044-0320181-00, Reference – Ultra marathon.

A treat for children of all ages, the Waiuku Christmas Display, created by Jim and Phyl Sneddon (above), opens in the Waiuku Town Hall this weekend with an even bigger selection of Santas and Christmas themes than ever before. Open until Christmas Eve, the display this year features something even more special - a talking reindeer which can chat to some of the passersby! Drawing thousands to Waiuku each year, the display has this year partnered with the Glenbrook Vintage Railway to add to the enjoyment of a day out.

Records tumble at Waiuku Swim Sports

Amid a riot of colour and noise, six records were bro-ken on Friday as Waiuku Col-lege hosted its annual swim sports event.

The swim-sisters of An-nielle and Danika Ryland-Higgins were the stars of the show, Annielle collecting records in the one-length backstroke (21.73 seconds), and the one-length back-stroke (22.80), beating the records of Simone Cowling and Kristy Brown respec-tively.

Younger sister Danika showed she will be a force to be reckoned with in College swimming, as she collected new records in the jun-ior girls one length (18.91) and three lengths (1.05.87) freestyle, as well as the one length butterfly (20.64). Her three lengths record beat Si-mone Cowling’s mark which had not been bettered for six years.

In the senior boys section, Josh Cleland clipped four-tenths of a second off his

Fine warm weather al-lowed both the finals of the Championship Mens and Ladies Over 60’s Pairs and Mens and Ladies Singles completed, which saw some thrilling competitive bowl-ing and Club titles being competed for at Buckland

Bowls. Winners in the Men’s Over 60’s Pairs: Mike Stone and Bob Main, runners up: Errol Short and Des White.

Winners in the Ladies sec-tion: Diane Main and Ber-nice Maloney, runners up: Helen Aarts and Joan Petrie.

In the Championship Sin-

gles, Jim Ballard took the win over Paul Gibbons. In the ladies section, Sue Walsh-am took the win over Di-ane Main. Winners in both Championships will now go forward on the 5th /6th April to represent Buckland in the Centre Champ of Champs.

Showing maturity and strength beyond his tender years, 15-year-old Josiah Natzke rocketed to victory in his first senior New Zea-land Motocross Champion-ships outing on Saturday.

The Waikato teenager, in a transitional phase of his racing career where he may contest selected senior events while still retaining his junior status, produced a stunner as he leapt into the lead and never looked back when the gates dropped for the first 125cc class race at the four-round series open-er at Pleasant Point, near Timaru, on Saturday.

The CMR Red Bull KTM Team rider disappeared over the dusty horizon, while fel-low KTM rider Aaron Wiltsh-ier, from Tauranga, fought through to take runner-up spot, with local favourite Courtney Duncan finish-ing third and Logan Black-burn was forced to settle for fourth.

Blackburn bounced back to win the remaining two 125cc class races on Satur-day, and he left Timaru with the championship lead ... although he only one point clear of senior debutant Natzke as the riders now head to Tokoroa for round two in two weeks’ time.

There was a great field of local and travelling golfers for the Waiuku Maori Golf Tournament, held at the Waiuku Golf Club on Satur-day, and some superb scor-ing in excellent, although breezy, conditions.

The Mens best gross was shot by local club member Craig Chambers, with a 71, while the best gross for the Ladies was an 83 from Gay Penbroke. Stableford scor-ing in the 40s was the or-der of the day for most of the winners, and the event proved an excellent fun-draiser for local golf, with winners getting the chance to represent the event in a regional tournament.

Organisers paid tribute to their sponsors and support-ers for the event (see clas-sifieds this week for further details).
