CCaappuullaa iinnvveessttss iinn ppeeoopplleetthhrroouugghh SSkkiillllss AAccaaddeemmyyCapula has joined the National Skills Academy for
Nuclear. The Skills Academy is an employer-led,
membership organisation which exists to ensure the UK
nuclear industry and its supply chain has the skilled,
competent and safe workforce it needs to deal with the
current and future UK nuclear programme covering all
subsectors. By placing nuclear organisations in a central
position, the Academy offers skills development for the
nuclear industry, by the nuclear industry. Its objectives,
among others, are:
• To maintain and further develop a broad network of
employer membership leading to sustainable and
vibrant businesses that meet industry needs
• To work with employers to help to demonstrate to
the public and target markets the excellence in skills
development undertaken so that opportunities are
understood
• To continue to identify standards and implement
improvement measures to aid in the demonstration of a
suitably qualified and experienced workforce
• To support the workforce in gaining the skills
required to underpin competence
• To define and enable a coherent approach to skills
across the UK
• To work with employers, government and skills
partners to clarify and communicate resource
requirements so that current demand and supply
forecasts and timelines are understood and addressed so
that expectations are managed
• To define and enable a coherent approach to
resource capacity across the UK
The decision to join the Academy follows a number
of key developments for Capula over the past twelve
months related to our nuclear industry operations, not
least our sustained recruitment drive (see page two) and
the opening of our dedicated secure facility at Beacon
House in Stone, Staffordshire.
“Capula recently celebrated 30 years of working on
nuclear projects,” said Nuclear Services Director Alex
Moore, “From our early days working on projects for
BNFL through to our present-day relationships with
clients such as Sellafield, URENCO and AWE, we have
worked hard to nurture an excellent reputation in this
industry to complement our work in other areas.
“Crucial to this is the calibre of our people and their
ability to deliver complex control solutions within agreed
timescales. We are committed to supporting the
development of our engineers and joining the National
Skills Academy for Nuclear is a natural step for Capula
as we look forward.”
Jean Llewellyn OBE, Chief Executive of the National
Skills Academy Nuclear Commented: “We are delighted
to welcome Capula as a member of the National Skills
Academy for Nuclear. By becoming a member, Capula
are demonstrating their commitment to the training and
development of its workforce to the standards required
by the nuclear industry in the UK. This commitment will
aid in the promotion of Capula as a quality organisation
providing excellence to the nuclear industry in the UK.
We look forward to working with Capula on their skills
requirements in the future.”

AAWWEE ggiivveess CCaappuullaa ssaaffeettyy aawwaarrddCapula is celebrating after being recognised by AWE for outstanding environmental, safety & health (ESH)
performance.
The Head of Construction Contractor ESH Award is an annual event. It is given in recognition of strong ESH
performance. The award is to show DMP and Construction Management’s appreciation of the hard work that
AWE’s contractors put in to meet their demanding ESH standards and programme of work.
Site Manager Richard Berwick was presented with the award by Sean Ryan (Head of Construction for AWE)
for Capula’s work on the Telemetry project, for which we are implementing a control solution.
“Safety is a major consideration on any project Capula delivers,” said Richard, “It’s great to know these
efforts are appreciated by our clients.”
RReeccrruuiittmmeenntt ffaaiirr aatttteennddaannccee ddrriivveessiinnccrreeaassee iinn ggrraadduuaattee aapppplliiccaannttssIt has been a busy, yet successful year for Capula’s
popular Graduate Recruitment programme. Having a
presence at a number of university recruitment fairs
(including Staffordshire, Manchester Metropolitan,
The University of Manchester, Loughborough,
Sheffield Hallam, Birmingham and Lancaster) has seen
a large increase in the number of graduates and
placement students applying for positions at Capula.
In addition, Capula’s presence on the successful
graduate recruitment website GGrraaddccrraacckkeerr has helped
to swell applicant numbers.
In total, 22 graduates have joined Capula in 2012,
with a further six students joining on year-long
placements.
Sandie Doran, an Assistant Project Manager
working on Nuclear projects, joined us in August after
graduating from Loughborough University with a
degree in Mechanical Engineering. “I first heard about
Capula at Loughborough’s recruitment fair in March
last year. What attracted me was the enthusiasm with
which their representatives talked about the company,
and it was great to speak to somebody who had
recently joined as a graduate and get an insight into
what they’ve experienced. I’m loving it here so far!”
Jaime Clinton is currently halfway through a
placement year with Capula, having also joined us in
July from Loughorough University where he is
studying a degree in Computer Science. “Being part of
a company that affects the daily lives of people is very
appealing to me. Since I’ve been here I’ve worked on
a number of projects with my own responsibilities. The
people are friendly and helpful, and I’ve learnt more
here in half a year than I did during the whole of my
second year at university!”
Capula’s presence at recruitment fairs is part of an
overall strategy to strengthen links with both
universities and colleges. “Having the opportunity to
speak face-to-face with graduates is valuable in itself,”
said Miles Kitchener, HR Manager for Capula, “but it’s
also raising our profile and it is an important part of
Capula’s growth strategy through graduate
recruitment to forge closer links with these
establishments.”

The UK energy minister has asked nuclear regulators to
begin discussions over Generic Design Assessment
(GDA) for Hitachi-GE's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor
(ABWR). The design has been proposed for new units at
the Wylfa and Oldbury sites.
Hitachi-GE approached the Department for Energy
and Climate Change earlier in this month seeking GDA
for the ABWR design. The move followed Hitachi's
purchase of Horizon Nuclear Power in late October
from E.ON and RWE, the German utilities that had
planned to build up to four new units at Wylfa and up
to three units at Oldbury. It immediately announced an
intention to deploy ABWRs at the sites.

Responsibility for Britain's stake in Urenco has been
moved between government departments in a
measure to help the country's work on a possible sale.
It is now the Department for Business, Innovation
and Skills (BIS) that will manage the one-third stake in
uranium enrichment specialist Urenco, rather than the
Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC). In
making the change, DECC said, "This parallels other
recent moves to consolidate government
shareholdings," which increasingly reside within a
specialist office of BIS.
The move "will strengthen the ability of the
government to utilise commercial expertise in the
future management of its Urenco shareholding," said
DECC, "including in the ongoing work on a possible
sale." This has been under consideration for several
years in line with an overall policy to end national
ownership of nuclear businesses.
In October 2009, the government stated that it
would continue to "explore options for realizing value
from its stake in Urenco" as part of a £16 billion sale of
major public assets in order to reduce the national debt.
At that time, then-prime minister Gordon Brown said
the sale of Urenco would be "subject to security issues
being addressed."
Fulfilling about 30% of global uranium enrichment
needs, Urenco has an order book of €19 billion. It had
pre-tax profits of €462 million in the six months to end-
June 2012 and the company's centrifuge uranium
enrichment capacity stands at 15.9 million separative
work units per year.

A two-year construction project to build a dry storage
facility for used fuel from EDF Energy's Sizewell B
power station is now underway. The facility will be used
from 2015, when the plant's storage pond is due to
reach capacity.
Sizewell B is the UK's only pressurized water
reactor, and has been operating since 1995. Unlike fuel
from the UK's Magnox and Advanced Gas-cooled
Reactor (AGR) fleets, all of Sizewell B's used fuel has
remained stored under water in an on-site fuel storage
pond. The new dry fuel store will provide capacity for
the unit’s used fuel from 2015 for the lifetime of the
power station or until a deep geological disposal
facility is available.
Conditional planning permission for the facility was
granted in July 2011. The store received the final
go-ahead in September 2012 after plant owner and
operator EDF Energy satisfied the local planning
authority, the Suffolk Coastal District Council Planning
Committee, about the steps it had taken to meet those
conditions.
Although dry stores for spent fuel are in use in many
locations around the world, the Sizewell B store will be
the first such facility in the UK. Used fuel from the
country's Magnox plants, all but one of which have now
ceased operation, has been reprocessed in a dedicated
facility at the Sellafield site. The Thermal Oxide
Reprocessing Plant (Thorp), also at Sellafield, treats used
fuel from the country's AGRs as well as light water
reactor fuels from overseas customers but is due to
cease operations in 2018 when outstanding
reprocessing contracts have been completed.

Capula is delighted to announce an addition to our
senior management team. Mason Hatton, 48, joins us
as Operations Director after a successful six years with
Imtech both in the UK and The Netherlands.
“My responsibility will be to take hold of the
delivery element of Capula and improve it to match the
growth requirement of the business,” says Mason, “This
involves looking at the whole scope of delivery from
order placement to commissioning. In addition, it will
involve supporting our Business Development team
from an operational perspective to make sure bids are
won and delivered in the correct approach.”
This is familiar territory for Mason - seven years ago
he was the Projects & Engineering Director of Peak
Traffic, prior to their acquisition by Imtech. Within a
few months he was promoted to Managing Director
where he successfully grew the company to revenues of
circa £60m over a period of three years.
So what of his Capula appointment? “I see this as a
lovely challenge – being involved in a successful
company and developing and driving the growth to the
next level of its evolution. It’s a big task, and I think it’s
important to make sure that expectations are managed,
but it’s also important to make sure that everyone is on
the same page so that we all understand what the
vision is and we all drive towards it.”
A Mechanical Engineering graduate of Nottingham
Trent University, Mason is married to wife Béatrice with
whom they have five children - all of which are keen
sportspersons.
“We’re a very sporty family - Béatrice used to
play basketball back in France, while I used to play
semi-professional football for Fairford Town in
Gloucestershire,” Mason explains, ”We had
some great matches against Forest Green
Rovers who, at the time, had a young
Paul Rideout (who went on to score an
FA Cup winning goal for Everton -
Ed.) playing for them - I marked him
out of the game!”

Capula is again celebrating a successful year for the company, with
considerable success in new contracts won across all our markets and
underpinning our continued headcount growth.
Capula is now consistently achieving £40 million in new orders each
financial year, based on strong client relationships across the energy and
utilities sectors. Now part of the Imtech group of companies, following
their acquisition of Capula last summer, we have the opportunity to drive
further growth in new services and markets.
“Our continued success is a direct result of Capula’s unique
positioning in our markets and the relationships we’ve nurtured with key
clients, combined with the knowledge and expertise of our staff and
effective teamwork throughout the business,” said Chief Executive Roger
Turner, “The overall marketplace remains a tough one in which to
succeed, yet we have still expanded the size of the company this year by
24% to 322 employees on the back of our continued success in winning
new work.”
Indeed, relationships has been the key focus of Capula’s business
development for several years and this – in conjunction with our delivery
expertise – has again been the key to significant contracts won in 2012.
Our Generation sector enjoyed a very successful year with clients
recognising our capabilities in biomass conversion and renewables. We are
also implementing more total solutions which include instrumentation,
motor control centres, variable speed drives and electricals in addition to
our core control offerings.
Our Nuclear sector saw success in response to the 2011 expansion of
our Nuclear Services operation to include a dedicated secure facility and
increases in SQEP staff with proven nuclear skills. 2012 also saw us achieve
the milestone of 30 years of working at Sellafield.
Utilities also enjoyed a busy year in which we continued to support
one of the UK’s first smart grid initiatives in conjunction with the Low
Carbon Network Fund and were also selected as the Strategic ICA
Framework Partner for Severn Trent Water until the end of AMP6 in 2020.
Winning and delivering these projects is underpinning our position as the
leading specialist in delivering integrated automation and real-time IT
solutions in the UK. As part of the Imtech group, we are also now able to
draw on the electrical, mechanical and ICT capabilities of this global
technical services provider and look forward to continued success in 2013.

Breast Cancer Campaign is a unique community of scientists, supporters and people touched by breast cancer.

Capula has supported the Wear It Pink campaign for many
years, and this year stepped up our fundraising efforts in a
bid to smash our previous best total.
In addition to encouraging staff to get involved by
wearing pink items of clothing and making a donation, a
number of staff took things further by coming to work in
fancy dress. Adopting the theme of Grease, several guys &
girls dressed either as T-Birds or Pink Ladies from the hit
musical.
But that wasn’t all - Dave Kirby (Programme
Director) and Jade Hughes (Project Administrator) also
recorded their own version of the famous John Travolta
& Olivia Newton-John single ‘Summer Nights’, with
backing vocals provided by a section of the group.
Colleagues were promised that the song would be
e-mailed to everybody upon a certain fundraising
target being met. In the end, the target was more
than doubled - leading to the group performing the
song live at our
Orion House headquarters in Stone, much to the
amusement of onlookers.
To supplement our fundraising efforts, there was a
successful cake sale, a quick-fire quiz with ‘mystery’ prizes
(prize bags of pink-themed items including marshmallows,
candy shrimps, strawberry bon bons and pink wafers).
"Capula is proud to support the excellent work done
by Breast Cancer Campaign every year through their
Wear It Pink day," said Chief Executive Roger Turner,
"With nearly £700 raised, it's an excellent achievement
by our staff who always come up with new and
innovative ways to raise money for good causes."

some funny exchanges – a couple of the guys disagreed

“This is the third year of Capula sponsoring the Festival
and it was great to see a noticeably bigger turnout in

2013 with a Silent Auction in aid of Oak Tree Farm Rural
Project in Staffordshire.
Oak Tree Farm is situated on a 15 acre smallholding
just a few miles from our Stone headquarters, and
provides a rural working environment where people
with learning disabilities gain the skills, independence
and confidence to take them towards an active role in
society.
The aim of the Silent Auction was to make use of any
unwanted Christmas gifts which may be attractive to
others, and Capula staff were encouraged to volunteer
items which were then made available for auction, with
all proceeds going to Oak Tree Farm.
In the end, £202 was raised for the charity venture.
“We all receive gifts at Christmas that we’re not
altogether keen on,” said organiser Rebecca Heron, “but
there’s nothing to say they might not be perfect for
somebody else. The Silent Auction was designed to
facilitate this while raising money for a worthy cause.”

Hargreaves Industrial Services Engineering Solutions
(formerly AJS Contracts) has engaged Capula to
implement a new control system at the Liverpool Port
for E.ON’s Ironbridge power station.
Liverpool Port is to receive deliveries of wood pellet
biomass for co-firing at Ironbridge. The fuel will be
taken from the ships by a new off-loader and relayed via
a series of conveyors into the Biomass Bulk Fuel Terminal.
Biomass will then be loaded from this storage facility
onto rail transport for Ironbridge as required.
Capula’s scope of work covers design, cubicle
manufacture, software configuration, works testing,
partial site installation and commissioning of the
Biomass Bulk Terminal control system.
We will be delivering a totally integrated control
solution using Siemens S7 PLCs & WinCC SCADA,
Intelligent Motor Control Centres (MCCs) including
Simocode pro and G120 variable speed drives (VSDs).
“Capula is heavily involved in the project to convert
Ironbridge power station to a co-firing facility, having
been awarded separate contracts for Lots 1, 2 and 3
previously,” said Business Development Director Simon
Coombs, “We are delighted to have increased this
involvement through this contract and play a significant
role in engineering a greener future for the UK.”

Having recently been appointed as Strategic ICA
partner, Capula is now assisting Severn Trent Water’s aim
to improve the effectiveness of Instrumentation, Control
& Automation (ICA) across their organisation.
Capula has been engaged to carry out a Review to
set the strategic direction for ICA and develop a
consolidated view of ICA requirements across Water,
Waste and Information Services as input into the PR14,
OFWAT funding approval process.
Simon Coombs, Business Development Director for
Capula describes the project: “After an initial assessment
of their current ICA estate and processes, we are
bringing ideas and experience from across a wide range
of industries to help agree a high-level direction for
Severn Trent Water. We are now working in joint teams
with their staff to rationalise and prioritise the
identified initiatives into a coherent programme that
achieves the right pace of change and investment in ICA
over the remainder of AMP5 and for AMP6”.
“Capula is already behaving as a strong partner to
Severn Trent Water”, said David Essex, Water Strategy
Manager for Severn Trent Water. “They understand our
business aims and bring good ideas and experience
which will help us to achieve our business objectives”.

Capula and PPA Energy combined to showcase a
visualisation solution at the recent Low Carbon Network
Fund Conference (LCNF) 2012 organised by the Energy
Networks Association.
The Conference included the latest progress from the
Ofgem funded LCNF Tier 1 & 2 projects and introduced
the recent successful Tier 2 bids to the industry,
explaining how to use existing infrastructure flexibly to
increase renewable generation and how alternative
methods of network reinforcement can boost capacity.
Capula and PPA Energy were promoting a data
visibility tool which Capula had designed in line with
technical specifications provided by PPA Energy on
behalf of UK Power Networks to aid planning,
diagnosis and asset management. It provides a detailed
overview across an entire power network, with the
option to drill down as far as specific transformer
performance. Using a Microsoft Silverlight front-end and
drawing data from an OSIsoft PI historian with PI AF
hierarchy, the tool provides customisable visualisations
including geographical location, time series and
analytical data, along with report generating options.

International Power has extended Capula's support
arrangements for Rugeley power station's APMS SCADA
until 2015. The support covers control desk equipment
for two units and the flue gas desulphurisation control
desk plant previously implemented by Capula.
Capula will provide 24/7/365 telephone support with
four-hour site response if required. It will also provide
Rugeley power station with access to skilled engineers
for consultancy and enhancement works.
“Capula has been providing high quality support for
the control systems at Rugeley for 20 years,” said Capula
Chief Executive Roger Turner, "Our Staffordshire
headquarters are close to Rugeley and this allows us to
play an important part in ensuring the continued
availability of their mission critical control systems.”

Capula has been engaged by Alstom for the
manufacture of several test cubicles destined for China.
Alstom has supplied a HVDC system for the State
Grid of China’s Ningdong – Shandong site in the North
East of the country (for which Capula has previously
provided a number of cubicles).
The four Valve Test Equipment (VTE) cubicles
currently being manufactured are designed to enable
Alstom’s client to test the value technology used on its
HVDC installation in China and ensure continued high
levels of operational performance.
The work involves reverse engineering and as part of
the contract Alstom have provided a specimen cubicle to
facilitate this activity. Part of the process involves the
sourcing of equivalent parts and equipment to replace
any obsolete items originally used.
“Capula enjoys a good working relationship with
Alstom,” said Transmission & Distribution Manager Chris
Conn, “We were selected for this work primarily for our
technical expertise in delivering highly complex systems,
but also for our locality to Alstom’s base in Stafford.”

SSuucccceessssffuull ccoommmmiissssiioonniinngg aatt IIttaalliiaannbbiioommaassss ppllaannttCapula has successfully completed commissioning of
the control systems for a brand new biomass plant with
a ground-breaking design.
The 4.5MW gasification unit is being built by
Staffordshire-based Biomass Power Ltd (BPL) in
Bagnolo, near Venice, Italy, and is ground-breaking
because of its unique horizontal and modular turnkey
format. In stark contrast to the traditional large-scale
vertical biomass gasification process, BPL is able to
confine their entire process technology solution within
sub-10 metre high buildings, and can circumnavigate
planning objections about scale as a result.
The technology also allows the handling of a wide
range of wastes for fuel like waste wood RDF and SRF.
In Bagnolo’s instance, the plant will be run on local
farming residue waste, but could also be fired with
forestry, straw and miscanthus among other fuels.
Capula has worked closely with Biomass Power
from the early stages of this project, winning the
contract for the implementation of a Siemens PCS7
control system in late 2010. The use of PCS7
significantly reduced our engineering design & code,
bringing valued enhanced features to the plant as a
result.
“We wanted to move away from previous control
systems which we felt were often dis-jointed, hard to
upgrade and challenging to maintain over a period of
time,” said Martin Riley, Engineering Director for BPL,
“Capula’s solution allows us to, in many ways, future-
proof our plants with a standardised approach to the
automated control system, ensuring consistency of
software development and access to subsequent
upgrades and service support for the foreseeable
future.”
“Capula’s knowledge and experience in this area
was a key reason for us being selected to deliver the
control solution for this plant, as was our closeness
geographically,” said Capula Chief Executive Roger
Turner, “Renewable energy is a growing market for
Capula and it is especially pleasing to have played an
integral role in such a forward-thinking company like
BPL.”
