Positively Pass It On!

There is more than $51 million of economic development projects in Hibbing, Minnesota this year. To promote that, the City of Hibbing and Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce developed a campaign called “Good to Grow.”

“We think we have a lot of development going on and getting that positive message out to people is a good thing. We hope it will act as a catalyst and stimulate other businesses to expand or start-up here,” Hibbing Area Chamber President, Lory Fedo said.

10 different businesses are being featured in this campaign. From hospitality to industry, big business to not quite so big, these businesses are good to grow.

“These are not all of the 2014 projects, by all means. But they are a good representation of the economic fabric of our community.” Fedo said.

Mike Egan, Chair of the Hibbing Economic Development Authority, said that all of the projects have started. “Our goal is to attract industry, business, and retail and we want to bring more people into Hibbing to utilize what we have to offer,” Egan said.

Here’s a list of the projects being highlighted in 2014:

1. Hampton Inn 2. Marshview Meadows (apartments and housing development) 3. Range Regional Airport terminal project 4. Detroit Diesel Expansion New Building 5. Miracle League of the Iron Range 6. Fedo said the campaign will include traveling display boards about each project, which will be rotated around the public places in Hibbing as well as newspaper articles and other media stories and promotions. For more in-formation contact:

Olson leaves footprint across Minnesota

By William Blazar David Olson left an incredible mark as president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce these past 23 years. He truly was one of the greatest champions for Minnesota. The tributes that poured in following his untimely death July 16 underscored his tenacity to help businesses succeed in this state and hire more Minnesotans. David made grassroots participation central to every aspect of our organization’s work. He crisscrossed the state regularly, connecting with businesses of all sizes and types. He was as comfortable talking with a business owner on Main Street as he was addressing the directors of a Fortune 500 company. Some of his deepest personal and professional relationships were with our local chamber of commerce partners. Local chambers were his roots. Prior to joining the Minnesota Chamber, he began as a staffer at the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, and, then, excelled leading the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce and the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce. He never forgot where he received his start. The resources and time he offered personally, and that provided by other Minnesota Chamber staff, will not be found at any other state chamber in the country. If local chambers had an “ask,” David responded. He was often a facilitator for local chamber board retreats. He was happy to jump in his car to speak at a legislative breakfast or board meeting. He was a mentor to local chamber leaders across the state and country. He accompanied a Minnesota delegation on an annual trip to Washington, D.C. The impact of his interactions was evident at his funeral as chamber leaders from International Falls to Winona came to pay their final respects. Other regions were represented as well including North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Washington, D.C. His insistence on listening to member concerns—and then engaging employers and employees at the Capitol—was evident both in the Chamber’s organizational strength and legislative accomplishments. In 2012, our 95-percent member retention was recognized as the highest among state chambers for the fifth consecutive year. The Minnesota Chamber delivered many legislative priorities for businesses, and local chambers were always key partners under David’s leadership. Significant achievements included workers’ compensation reform, the “Vote Yes” campaigns for transportation funding, and this year we repealed the sales tax on business-to-business transactions. Other organizations sought David for his expertise in shaping and advancing public policy. In recent years, ensuring a skilled workforce for Minnesota employers became a high priority for him personally as well as for the Minnesota Chamber. He served six years on the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities Board of Trustees, including as chair from 2007-10. His tenure was marked by new initiatives to better align postsecondary offerings with workforce needs. David had an uncanny ability to bring people together for setting strategy and solving problems. He had a great combination of ingenuity, persistence and humor—and, most importantly, was able to turn that into action and accomplishments. He loved our state. He worked every day to make it better and loved being engaged in anything and everything that would make our economy stronger. The Minnesota Chamber and our network of local chambers—the statewide business community—are stronger than ever today. That’s testament to David’s leadership and the foundation on which we intend to continue building. His sights were set on helping our economy change and grow. That vision is ours. Leadership Class 2014

The Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce held graduation ceremonies in June for its 18th annual Leadership Class. The class engages participants in a series of workshops and experiences that develop leadership skills and practices and build community and professional networks. World class instructors are used for each session. This year’s class visited the State Capitol as in past years. Participants are pictured here with Attorney General Lori Swanson and Chamber President Lory Fedo. They also met with Senator David Tomassoni, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Representative Carly Melin and multiple other legislators and lobbyists. Thank You To EVERYONE Who Made Our Golf Outing A Huge Success!

Our golf outing on August 4th was a huge success! We had a beautiful day, with the sun shining bright, wonderful treats to eat, courtesy of MCC, and everyone had a good time. This year two teams won the golf event! Team Hibbing Taconite (Jeff Cowling, Adam Os-borne, Gary Baumgardner, Kris Benusa, and Joe Marturano) and Team VRDC (John Fedo, Reggie Hirt, David Tomassoni, and Kelsey Hirt)! Congratulations to those teams for playing a great game of golf. We handed out several raffle prizes from local businesses, Marcy Anderson was our lucky winner of $214 for split the pot, JV Wiener won the lottery board, and Brianna Hoheisel has a trip to plan with her Delta Tickets.

We want to thank all of the volunteers who helped us at the golf outing. Without your continued support we would not have been able to have this wonderful event.

RYP Presents: Resistance to Change by Chuck Lyons

Join us for a Lunch & Learn to hear Chuck Lyons, Hibbing Community College professor talk about the psychological resistance to change based on personality types and methods that can be used to reduce that resistance.

Chuck Lyons grew up working in a family business in what was a small farming community, now a large suburb, Eden Prairie. The family business, Lyons’ Tap, is where he learned much of what he is teaching now.

His formal education includes a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Mankato State and a second Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Marketing Education from the University of Minnesota and has additional graduate study in Human Resources in Psychology.

He has been teaching in the business, psychology and communications areas for the past 36 years. He has led workshops in Strategic Planning, Harassment, Communication, Team Building and Customer Satisfaction.

Chuck and his wife Carol lived in Hibbing for 35 years and raised two children. They are now completely devoted to their 5 year old granddaughter.

Chisholm, MN, May 27, 2014—Exciting news!! The Minnesota Discovery Center received an$18,000 grant from the Cliffs Foundation to develop a mini traveling table that exhibits the taconite mining process. This exhibit is a mobile table with a mini-pelletizing machine that demonstrates pelletizing taconite and includes other fun and hands-on projects for school children. The table will also be traveling to various schools throughout the Iron Range to make this incredible exhibit more available to our area youth. MDC is partnering with Cliffs, Center for Applied Research and Technology Development (CARTD) , BARR Engineering, and Science Mining and Engineering to sponsor this fabulous exhibit.

WALKTOBER With fall quickly approaching our Wellness committee is looking for engaging programs for chamber member companies and their employees to participate in during the “cooler” season. The committee thought it would be fun to set-up “WALKTOBER” challenges between groups of employees. “WALKTOBER” focuses on encouraging people to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, 5 days a week for a month. Experts have found that populations who do walk 10,000 steps a day, show a significant decrease in lifestyle diseases like heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Minnesota Discovery Center Welcomes New Curator-Allyse Freeman Allyse is originally from West Dundee, IL which is a suburb of Chicago. She graduated in 2011 from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL with a degree in History, Anthropology, and Geology. She then went to UW-Milwaukee for her Master’s degree in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology and a Museum Studies certificate. Allyse has conducted archaeological excavations in Ireland and Illinois. She is an avid Green Bay Packers fan, enjoys anything sci-fi or comic book related, and loves playing tennis. Allyse is very excited to start her career in museums at the Minnesota Discovery Center. Welcome Allyse!
