When Bill and Olga Runnalls updated their wills, they chose to give to places that have affected their lives the most. One of those places was the Wellness Institute for its impact on their well-being and happiness. Their legacy gift will help other people to enjoy Wellness as much as they have "for as long as possible."

Sharing Wellness A Legacy of Prevention

will become fully digital by March 2014. To stay in touch with the latest programs and events at the Wellness Institute, please visit www.wellnessinstitute.ca and “Subscribe for Updates” by entering your email in the box on the right of the home page.

Fall 2013 3

When the Wellness Institute opened in October of 1996, Bill and Olga Runnals were among the first to become members. Now, almost 17 years later, they remain among the loyal 276 members who joined in the first year of business.

Over those years they have built many friendships at Wellness and have even recruited a few members. They enjoy the camaraderie and have made a routine of staying for breakfast at the café after their workout.

Both Bill and Olga are very supportive of the preventative aspect of the Wellness mission. Without the years spent as members, they feel that they would not be in good enough shape today to maintain activities such as gardening in their large yard. The regular workouts also help keep their high blood pressures in check to ward off complications.

While staying active and well is their focus, the Runnalls are not strangers to options outside of the gym. When Bill hurt his back during the '97 flood relief effort, he fully recovered with the help of the Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Clinic on-site. In addition, they've each had massage therapy and Olga has taken some Health Education classes.

In many ways, the Wellness Institute has become a part of their lives – a part they say they are lucky to have.

When they reflected on the legacy they would leave one day, they wanted to ensure the facility would continue to attract people and stay open for years to come. Their gift to the Wellness Future Fund will support prevention through equipment upkeep and replacement.

Other Ways to ShareThe Runnalls' story is just one example

of how charitable contributions can help support the work the Wellness Institute does to help prevent disease and disability, teach people to better manage their conditions and aid in recovery.

The community can help with annual or regular contributions by visiting the Seven Oaks Hospital Foundation's web page at www.sogh/foundation and arranging an online donation to the Wellness Future Fund (or any hospital department or campaign).

Corporate contributions are also important to the work we do. A recent contribution of new cabinetry from Kitchen Craft™ will help keep our Wellness Room 1 kitchen in working order so our dietitian and guest chefs can continue to demonstrate healthy cooking options and food choices.

See Program 62 (Page 7) to learn more about planned giving and look for upcoming events for opportunities to support the Wellness Institute.

Sharing Wellness A Legacy of Prevention

You Can Help Share Wellness...Wellness Institute is a department of Seven Oaks Hospital, but a non-profit, self-supporting one with a mission to help our community become well and stay well. Charitable donations help us do more, through:

• Capitalimprovements(renovations,equipment)

• HealthEducationprogramsforthepublic

• Programsforchronicdiseasemanagement

• Newandinnovativeprogramdevelopmentandresearch

• Communityhealthy livingevents

Donations to the Wellness Future Fund are held for this purpose.

To support the Welllness Future Fund, visit www.sogh.ca/foundation or call the Foundation at 204-632-3552.

The donation of replacement cabinetry by Kitchen Craft for our Wellness Room 1 kitchen lets us demonstrate healthy cooking options.

Itisnotnewsthatadults55+areagrowingpopulation,butwiththisgrowthcomesconcernsaboutqualityoflifeinourlateryears.

While chronic disease and disability were once thought to be a natural and unavoidable part of getting older, we know now that many conditions can be prevented or managed with changes in lifestyle. Yet we have a ways to go.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 42% of adults in their 60's already have some difficulty stooping, crouching or kneeling... a statistic that increases with age. That means a large number of people are finding it hard to enjoy bending to pick up a golf ball, hug a grandchild, put in their garden or countless other activities that add to daily life from early in their retirement years.

The International Council on Active Aging encourages older adults to add life to these years through Active Aging Week events. This year, Active Aging Week events held September 22-28 and Senior’s & Elder’s month events held in October will be promoted by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB). The Wellness Institute will help demonstrate the potential for healthy aging with our annual Active Aging Open House. The event not only offers free screenings and information booths, but gets hands-on with seminars, group exercise and a food demonstration. Event Ambassadors act as living examples of the benefits of staying active while helping to guide guests as they complete Passports to Active Aging for a chance to win the door prize.

The event is just one way the Wellness Institute supports Active Aging. The facility and programs reflect a senior-friendly focus. We also offer specialized training for working with older adults (see Page 4) and work with partners for research and innovations in aging.
