Cooking For A CureA few months before NBCAM, begin coordinating a tastyfundraiser. Put out the word that you need recipes so you

can create acookbook, whichwill be sold tobenefit breastcancer research.Present a Ribbon-Shaped CookieCutter (see page 35)to each person who

volunteers to contribute a recipe. Ask everyone to add apink element to the recipes to tie them to breast cancerawareness. In October, hold an open house where you sellthe cookbooks. Hand out a Die-Cut Pink Ribbon MagneticBookmark (see page 7) with each one. Have samples of thefeatured food as refreshments.

Educated And PreparedHelp women in your community be prepared for dangeroussituations by holding a self-defense class. Bring in an expertto lead the training. Thendo a short presentation on mammograms, clinical breast

postcards that read, “Someone who cares about you wantsto remind you that October is National Breast CancerAwareness Month. Please schedule a mammogram if youhaven’t had one in 2010 yet. And remember to perform self-exams.” Attach postage ahead of time. October andeducation about breast cancer go hand-in-hand

thanks to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM)events. The campaign reaches millions of people of all ages andbackgrounds. NBCAM is a time not only for proclaiming theimportance of early detection, but also for raising research funds,supporting individuals impacted by the disease, honoring breast cancersurvivors, and recognizing the progress being made towards finding acure. In 1985, the event began as a week-long campaign, utilizingnews reports and brochures as well as testimony to Congress aboutthe importance of access to mammography. The event’s impactincreased with televised public service announcements by formerfirst lady and breast cancer survivor Betty Ford and her daughter

Susan Ford Bales.Twenty-five years later, the message of NBCAM still needs to be

spread. Positive Promotions is here to help with our catalog of breast care productsand NBCAM gifts. These items are incorporated into creative event ideas, many of whichoriginated from customers like you. Use the ideas to have an excellent awareness month!

Yes We Can!During October, fight hunger as well as breast cancer.Announce that you will be collecting nonperishable food atyour NBCAM event(s). If you have a facility or business, youinstead could accept food throughout the whole month.Give out a Breast/Testicular Self-Exam Two-Sided ShowerCard (see page 6) to each person who brings in a fooddonation. Also give him or her a raffle ticket from theAwareness Raffle Pack (see page 31). Hold the drawingeither at the end of your event or the end of the month.Donate the food to a local women’s shelter.

Out And AboutOrganize a Women’s Day Out event tocelebrate NBCAM. Contactprofessionals who offer services towomen and see if they will donatetheir time. Set up a booth for eachone, and assign them clever names.For example, have a “Give BreastCancer Awareness A Hand” manicurebooth, a “Cut For A Cure”hairdressing booth, and a “Show YourSupport” bra-fitting booth. Charge anadmission fee to offset the cost of holding this event. Duringyour special day, distribute educational materials, such asthe 2011 Women’s Monthly Planner With Wellness Tips(see page 3) and the “Know Your Numbers: Women’sHealth Tests Recorder” Pocket Pal & Pen Set (see page 4).

A Pink GlowLight up your town to raise funds andawareness. Get permission to wrapstrings of pink lights around light postsin your downtown area. Ask businesses,organizations, and individuals to eachsponsor a post. Attach signs that tell whosponsored them and that announceNational Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth. Use Pink Ribbon Luminaries

With Flameless Tea Lights (see page 34) or Light Up Mirrors (also page 34) as thank-you gifts for the sponsors.

Aloha GuestsTo draw people into your educational NBCAM activity,

try a Hawaiian theme. Adorn your facility with tropical decorations. Have youremployees and/or volunteers wear pink Hawaiian shirts.

Place a flower lei on attendees as theyarrive. Play ukulele music. Keep fruit-flavored drinks, such as pineapple andmango, cold in Insulated Cooler Bags

2009 Breast CancerAwareness Contest WinnersFirst PrizeCentral A&M High School, Moweaqua, IllinoisCentral A&M High School participated in itscommunity’s Real Men Wear Pink program andreceived a Pink Warrior Award for going aboveand beyond. The school’s student councilsponsored a 10-mile bike ride. It also organized abasketball-shooting contest. FCCLA, a campusclub, held a bake sale with pink homemadegoodies and a Putt For The Pink golf contest.The different grade levels competed againsteach other to fill pink boots with monetarycontributions. The football team and coacheswore pink shirts while posing in a ribbonshape for a photo. An October football gamehad pre-game and half-time ceremoniesfeaturing breast cancer survivors. Theschool used Positive Promotions’ vinylbanners and embroidered pink ribbons.

Second PrizeMadison County Breast Cancer Support Group,Richmond, KentuckyIn October, this group of breast cancer survivorsturns its attention to increasing awareness.Members help the local hospital with a Paint TheTown Pink campaign and assist universitystudents with a Cheering For The Curefundraiser. This year, the organization alsodistributed information at a shopping center. Itslargest NBCAM activity is the Women’s WellnessFun Day. The 2009 event included meals, medical

presentations, vendors, entertainment, doorprizes, a fashion show, and an ice cream social.Attendees received Positive Promotions’ planners,compacts, and bags.

Third PrizeSt. Mary’s Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes,MinnesotaSt. Mary’s is a nonprofit facility that focuses onproviding health services to lower-income andsenior patients. In one week during NBCAM,volunteers raised more than $12,000 so a newdigital mammography machine could bepurchased. They sold pink baked goods, tacos,and tie-dyed t-shirts. Employees paid $3 towear jeans. For a benefit auction, localbusinesses decorated cakes and donated giftcertificates or gift baskets. The facilityutilized Positive Promotions’ pins andbracelets.

Honorable MentionOperating Engineer Trust Funds, Pasadena,CaliforniaOperating Engineer Trust Funds has felt theimpact of breast cancer, as eight employees werediagnosed with the disease in an eight-year timeperiod. During these years, the companycollected $62,500 for breast cancer organizations,$17,500 of that in 2009 alone. In addition toraising money through donations and raffles, thecompany holds a free lunch annually thatfeatures guest speakers and medical servicesproviders. Positive Promotions’ mints, pens, andsticky pads enhanced the luncheon.
