POSITION DESCRIPTION –MINE GEOLOGIST

1.0 Key Position Details:To lead and co-ordinate grade control activities for underground operations and manage and participate in all aspects of the mine geological function while ensuring adherence to all statutory requirements and Company Safety, Health and Environmental standards and procedures.

REPORTS TO: Mining Manager SUPERVISE STAFF: Yes

Prepare and compile Departmental reports,

Conduct Mineral Resource calculations,

Act as liaison between Geology and Mining Engineering,

Supervision of Mine Technicians,

Co-ordinate geological activities at the nominated Underground Mine,

Ensuring ore body definition in the most accurate and cost efficient manner possible,

Assist Mining Engineers by providing advise to the mine planning function,

Provide technical support to the mine as required,

Provide day to day grade control activities by supplying a professional and timely geological service,

Delineate and define stoping blocks in a timely fashion as dictated by the mine schedule,

Ensure stockpiles are properly managed,

Provision of geological information and advice to the Mining and the Processing departments. Ensure that Ore Reserve information is utilised in an optimal manner,

Ensure information is provided so that future ore production can be forecasted accurately,

Compilation of resource information based on the status of grade control of various levels throughout the mine as at 31 December and 30 June each year,

Planning and supervising underground drilling programs,

Ensuring that the set standards of geological documentation and interpretation are met,

Commit to building strong working relationships within the whole mining group,

Provide technical and supervisory input to the Geology department,

Ensure the geology department reviews and signs off on all mining and survey plans, and any possible problems associated with the plans are highlighted,

Comply with WA Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and Regulations 1995,

Promote a safe, healthy and productive work environment,

Ensure that all activities are performed to the appropriate site OH&S standards,

Ensure Job Specific Safety Skills and Responsibilities are met.

Ensure ore reserve grades are met or exceeded,

Contractor systems are reviewed and signed off as appropriate (e.g. work practices, competencies and risk analysis meets or exceeds FNP documentation),

Submission of daily, weekly and monthly reports to relevant personnel,

Formal sign off conducted for Geology related contractors for plant / personnel working on FNP leases,

All relevant geological data collected and recorded,

Grade Control Programme

Is to ensure quality assurance of the following;

Target Generation,

Execution,

Stope Generation,

Reconciliation.

Essential

Tertiary qualification in Geology

Strong computer literacy skills

Mine workers Health Surveillance Certificate

C class driver’s licence

High level knowledge of the WA 1994 MSI Act and Regulations, OH&S and Duty of Care,Desirable

2-5 years relevant mining geological experience

Competent user of Datamine software

During the course of the Senior Mine Geologist’s work, he/she may be potentially exposed to the following workplace hazards and should ensure therefore comply with Company Standards and Procedures at all times

WORK HAZARDS

Minimal in office environment,

Repetitive lifting and carrying and exposure to the elements during corefarm duties,

Underground environments vary between being wet, dusty and humid. Lighting is restricted and clothing, equipment and machinery can become muddy, greasy and often wet,

Ground is broken and uneven and access ways often wet, muddy and slippery with loose slopes,

In an emergency situation workers could be required to climb approx. 400 metres of vertical ladderway or traverse 700 metres of sloped ground,

A combined weight of approximately 8kg of personal protective equipment must be worn


Lifting/Carrying

Rarely – may infrequently lift and move rock samples up to 15kg within office environment for display purposes – no carrying.

Standing/Sitting/Walking

Average 5-6 hours day seated at desk – variety of duties including computer entry, paperwork, plan drawing, phone-calls and personal interaction. Two to three days per month will be required to spent entire shift at VDU compiling reports (not repetitive or data entry type work),

Average 4-5 hours per day driving around site on mine roads to meet with other staff and supervise employees in the open pit and corefarm. Involves walking distances up to 200metres over rocky, uneven and unstable ground and slopes. Inspecting and observing works only- no manual labour involved,

Average 2hour underground visit every day to assess progress of drilling contractors and Geologists - involves frequent driving on uneven underground roads (max 20km to lowest level of mine) and frequent traversing of short distances only to talk with employees or reach required location. Supervisory/observatory role only,

May occasionally assist staff in manual handling of core trays for up to 1hour periods – involves frequent and consistent lifting during this time of oversize core trays 15 –20kg from ground to waist height and carrying trays short distances only - up to 3 metres over level surfaces. Maximum tray weight approx. 35kg assisted. Required to twist slightly and reach forward during grasping and carrying of trays in order to accommodate oversize load (trays approx. 1m x 0.5m wide),

May occasionally assist staff with “face” (wall) sampling duties – involves repetitive use of small 1-2kg pick to break rock chips from underground walls and collect in sample bags. Holding sample bag with one hand until full - approx. 5kg. Frequent lifting of 20-25kg filled sample bags from ground and carrying short distances over rocky and uneven ground to deposit in vehicle tray.

Keyboard, mouse, handwriting and drawing,

Gross hand skills and manual dexterity for manual handling tasks.

Other

Must be comfortable working at heights as inspections within underground raise development is necessary.

An aversion to confined spaces/claustrophobia should be assessed due to the requirement for employee to go underground,

Sense of smell necessary – sulphur dioxide or “stench” gas is released through ventilation system to signal need for evacuation in emergency situations


including boots, helmet, self-rescuer and lamp battery on belt, overalls and eye protection,

Potential rock falls,

Potential high heat levels,
