Let Us Make a Difference Sixty years ago in May we both graduated from Johnson Bible College and the following year we went to Brazil as missionaries. We spent 15 years there, 3 years in Puerto Rico, and 32 years in Portugal, more years out of our home country than in it. We hope we have made a difference wherever we have been. Anything we have accomplished you have been our partners through finances and prayers. Often people wonder if one person makes a dif- ference. We read recently of a Portuguese, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a consul to Bordeaux, France, whose actions prevented 30,000 Jews from being sent to Nazi Concentration camps. Peter made a difference when he preached at Pentecost. Paul brought the gospel to Europe when he answered the Macedonian Call. All of these were inspired by Jesus Christ, the one who changed the history of the world forever. Now let us all make a difference. Four Cultures Come Together In the last PIONEER, we told you about Josemar, a son of an Indian Chief from the Guarani Tribe in Brazil, who wanted to the baptized. He had a serious drinking problem and we requested prayer for him. Praise God our prayers were answered and we rejoice that he was baptized by Wilson Spindola in Setubal. He is doing well. Let Us Make a DifferenceSixty years ago in May we both graduated from Johnson Bible College and

the following year we went to Brazil as missionaries. We spent 15 years there, 3 years in Puerto Rico, and 32 years in Portugal, more years out of our home country than in it. We hope we have made a difference wherever we have been. Anything we have accomplished you have been our partners through finances and prayers.

Often people wonder if one person makes a dif-ference.

Four Cultures Come TogetherIn the last PIONEER, we told you about Josemar, a son of an Indian Chief from the Guarani Tribe in Brazil,

who wanted to the baptized. He had a serious drinking problem and we requested prayer for him. Praise God our prayers were answered and we rejoice that he was baptized by Wilson Spindola in Setubal. He is doing well. Only God can bring together four distinct cultures: American, Brazilian, Guarani, and Portuguese.

And Now it is Goodbye! After 32 years, we feel it is time to return

to our family in the US.. We will leave Lisbon, soon and will be officially retired at the end of 2013. We will really miss our life here, but look forward to what God has in store for us. Would you prayerfully consider continuing some sup-port for the Church in Setubal, Portugal? We have appreciated all the letters, calls, visits, interest in our work, financial help, prayer sup-port and encouragement through the years. This will probably be our last PIONEER!

We will live with David and Toni Robison at 2760 Odom Rd. Hope Mills, NC 28348-8973.

HE IS STILL IN CONTROL!

Small World / New NeighborsSeveral years ago, we were invited to be friends

on Facebook by Joao Mendes in Sweden. We do not do Facebook, but we assured him we would be friends anyway. Later he came to Lisbon on holiday and looked us up. To our pleasant surprise, when he was a kid, he was a member of a Church we worked with in Brazil. It had been 42 years since we had been together and we had a wonderful time remembering the past. The next year he brought his wife, Gunilla, for us to meet and know. They really like Portugal and have bought an apartment just 2 blocks from the Carcavelos Church. He not only attends, but has become a real handy-

man around the building and also for the members when needed. Thank you, Joao. Who would have ever thought this possible! God is faithful always!

UPDATING ACTIVITIESSarah's Doings

Sarah turned 80 on December the 1st and still finds it hard to believe, but is happy to know that old age is always 15 years older than you are. Some of the ladies came early with gifts and refreshments. They also brought the flowers that Dick had secretly ordered.

Sarah has participated in an intercessory prayer group called Lydia International for more than 20 years. At a recent leadership meeting, she was presented with a special card and flowers of appreciation for her work over the years.

Number 10Congratulations to Mark and Naomi Phegley on the birth of their son, Luke

James, our 10th great grandchild.

Church GrowthThe Carcavelos Church has had several baptisms and a good number of transfers.

Also there was another baptism through the jail ministry the Church sponsors.

John helping at church cookout -- sardines and pork steaks!

Sarah's birthday -- 80

Robert Fife with Jurecema Robert Fife with Maria Helena

Celebration and GratitudeThe Church in Carcavelos celebrated 30 plus years. Dick preached, the auditorium was decorated with

hundreds of pictures giving a pictorial history. It was appreciated and enjoyed by all, as well as the church picnic that followed.

We are grateful for the Lew Cass Family and Bob Sigafoose who thought they could wait in Portugal for their visas to Bangladesh and Singapore as well as in the US and could get their “foot in the door” for us. While waiting, they started an English service plus made contacts with some Portuguese people from Angola and Mozambique that proved very helpful for our work later on. We are grateful for Arnaldo Braz from Mozambique and Raul Silva from Lisbon. They helped Lew and Bob make contacts for people interested in a new church.

We are grateful for the Portugal Christian Mission Team. Tim and Dixie Thomas, Debbie Brunsman and Cheri Oakley worked early on with us and then moved on to other missionary work.

We are grateful for Paula Harford who worked with our youth. She met and later married Ahmad Rahmanian and returned to the USA.

We are grateful for the Robert Fife family, who came from Brazil and is still with us after 25 years. We are grateful for Tom Fife who came many times to teach our people through Theological Education

by Extension. We are grateful for Bill and Ginny Loft who filled in for us during a furlough and then went on to open the

work in Alcantarilla, Spain. It still continues in the hands of Dr. Erick Gutierrez and family. We are grateful for Wilson and Elsa Spindola for their continuing work in Setubal and also in Carcavelos. We are thankful for all who came and those who supported them.We are thankful for the Lord who is still raising up people for His work here.
