1st Phase of Construction

Dynamics

When Portugal recovered the ball they started changing the pace of their game. Increasing the pace specially with Renato Sanches, could cause more trouble to Poland.When they started the transition, the ball entered in the middle, preferentially. That created space, because Ronaldo and Nani were trying the external diagonals.Portugal opts to circulate the ball through passes, until the space is created, then preferentially they conduct the ball to the key pass.

2nd Phase of Construction

DynamicsThe midfielders and the back-wingers are dynamic, showing up in the back of the man in the ball for the cross in the line. This dynamics occurs due to the need of creating at least 2 passing lines.João Mário risks more in this kind of movement than Renato Sanches, due to the fact that he plays closer to William Carvalho who is the most defensive player in Portugal midfield. Opting to create space in the line for the cross, Portugal had two problems:First, this situation benefit for one of Poland’s strenghts – aerial duels.Second, if Nani or Ronaldo opened in the wing to create a crossing situation, the danger area was empty.

On the other hand, when Portugal explored the space between the defenders and searched for the through pass, this created several good situations. Ronaldo was really ineffective, otherwise Portugal probably would have won before the penalties.

DynamicsRonaldo was the biggest shooter on the team with 5 shots, all of them inside the box. This doesn´t mean he played poorly. Ronaldo worked a lot to create spaces in the line for Eliseu or one of the midfielders, and Nani benefited a lot from Ronaldo’s team work. Portugal varied between long and short shots, but revealed a preference for the left side for tow reasons – Eliseu was playing more offensively than Cédric, and Ronaldo was searching for this space more often.

The goal starts with a foul taken really quickly, with Renato on the opposite side with space to progress. Nani, cleverly searches the space between the lines of Poland, who was caught unbalanced.

The direct combination between Nani, making a brilliant heel pass for the assist, and Renato Sanches, resulted in the equalyzer shot with Renato´s weaker foot.

Ronaldo kept away from the play with 2 defenders marking him, which resulted in more space for Nani and Renato to combine on the left side.
