Answers: Figure one: Big Daddy by Geoff Yeomans, Figure two: General Sir Edward Hamley by William Barnes Boadle Figure three: Sarah by Alison Allnutt Figure four: Barbara Taylor by George Jardine Figure five: Paradise Plumes and Red Shawl by William Ranken Figure six: Queen Elizabeth the 2nd by James Cliffe Sometimes a painter will select a setting to tell you more about the sitter. Objects and clothing may be selected to provide more information and to bring the portrait to life. Take a look at the following portrait paintings and investigate how the objects selected provide you with more information about the sitter. Ask the following questions:

1. What are the objects in the painting? 2. What do they tell us about the sitter? 3. Why do you think the artist has selected

them? 4. Would the painting be different without them?

In the painting collection at the Williamson art Gallery we have a lot of paintings by a local artist Mavis Blackburn. Mavis was a regular visitor to the gallery and her work includes a number of portraits and

self portraits. Below are 3 self portraits. Take a close look at them and see if you can put them in chronological order.

Now it’s your turn to have a go at drawing some self portraits. You will need to look in a mirror or use a photograph to help you! Start off with drawing just your face in the mirrors below. Have fun and

Now it’s time to think about creating a self portrait of the whole body. Decide if you will be sitting or standing, looking out or within the portrait. Think about what you might wear and objects you may use

to give clues about your personality. Take a look at the portraits below that may help you with your decisions.
