New England Continuous Arm ChairTo plan and create a reproduction of the Continuous Arm Windsor Chair has been a great personal challenge. Our firstefforts (indeed our first models) were complete failures. The special exertions needed to bend and mold flawless straight-grained ash lumber into accurate contours surely can be appreciated in our fine finished model. Perfect examples of thisvery rare Continuous Arm Windsor can only be found in the hands of private collectors or in the protected safety of our

great museums. How fortunate we have been to engage the many pairs of skilled hands of our own master chairmakers torecreate from hard-to-find originals a most graceful and comfortable model.

Brace Back Continuous Arm ChairOur Brace Back Windsors have a solid cherry seatwith a hand formed extension of the main seat whichis neither applied nor glued. The early New York andConnecticut Windsor chairmaker referred to thisextension as a tongue, and added two extra spindlesto give the appearance of strength.

First Boston Arm ChairThe original of this handsome and historic occasional chair was entrusted to our craftsmen by The First Bostonian Corporation, an investment

banking and brokerage firm, for the purpose of reproduction. Utilizing solid native wood and meticulously duplicating all the contours and detailsof the eighteenth-century model, Duckloe Chairmakers handcrafted a series of “First Boston” Arm Chairs for the company’s New York City office. We subsequently have developed a matching side chair, and now are offering both versions. This timeless furniture design of our forefathers is sure

to please all who appreciate quality - and be a proud possession of coming generations.

Pennsylvania Country

TableOur Pennsylvania Country Table is

an adaptation from a locally found oldfarm table. The classic design,

in solid cherry or solid oak, can be used in either kitchen or dining room

and 18th century or contemporary settings.

The extension mechanism is beautiful in its simplicity; two ash supports are

pulled out from each end. These supports are for the extension leaves.

On the bottom of the leaves are dowel pins that fit into holes

on the supports.A small tab on the bottom

of the leaf slides under the table to prevent the leaf from flipping off the supports.

We offer this table in two sizes:36” x 62” and 40” x 72”.

Two 15” leaves are available in both sizes.

During the 18th century, stools were used by clerks at high desks and men at workbenches. We are not sure if they were ever used in taverns but today our

bar stools are used both in the home at kitchen counters, at home bars, and at restaurants and clubs. The saddle benchcan be used as a footrest or extra seating when needed in kitchens.

Our nancy benches are made from solid pine. These benches are used for seating in

kitchens and dining rooms and can be used for coffee tables. The three standard lenghts are:

42”, 54” and 72”.

Windsor Arm Chairs were available in two basic styles: comb backs and loop backs. The comb backs had top rails and the loop backs had bent bows for backs.

There are, of course, variations:the rare continuous arm chairs

and the oval backs with applied arms.

Thomas Jefferson is creditedwith designing the first writingarm Windsor made to his specifications. The Windsor chair had a writing surface attached to the one arm. We believe that he drafted the Declaration ofIndependence on his Windsor Writing Arm Chair. Our chair is beautifully balanced. Three posts supportthe writing arm and a draweris suspended under the seat.A left hand model is also available.

Our Chief Justice arm chair is a reproduction of a priceless original which is in residence at Independence hall in Philadelphia, PA.Our hand-crafted model has been fashioned from the original chair’s species of wood -- a fine tight-grained tulip poplar from

which we could saddle the great depth of the seat area, as well as to produce a most pronounced center horn ... bold Philadelphiastyle turnings from clear hard white maple ... steam bend northern ash wood to form the continuous arm and to prepare a graceful

comb-back for our carver; and unusual deep scroll carving on each “ear” which makes the final supreme style most correct ...the flexible and properly cured tight-grained hickory cuttings in precise diameters for spindles which brace both arm and comb ...

finally, those razor-sharp tapered wedges; in various widths, and in their proper places; which are necessary to knit together all the skillfully formed parts with glue only.

The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities was founded in 1910 by William Sumner Appleton, a prominentBostonian who brought crusty determination to the battle to save historic buildings. Appleton became the country’s first full time

preservationist and defined the parameters of the field. He was the first to recognize the value of preserving old buildings for their intrinsic architectural merit as opposed to their association with historic figures or events. He devised the basic working methods ofpreservation, insisting on deliberate care and exhaustive documentation, which remain gospel for preservationists today. His zeal,

tenacity, and leadership were responsible for saving countless historic buildings across New England, either under SPNEA’s auspices or in cooperation with local groups. Today, SPNEA is the largest regional preservation organization in the country.

It owns 44 properties, 23 of which are filled with historic furnishings and open to the public from June through October. Its headquarters is located at the Harrison Gray Otis House, 141 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA 02114.

Frederick Duckloe & Bros., Inc., are the exclusive licensee for SPNEA Windsor chairs.

The Commissioned Reproductions from The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities

This distinctive comb-backWindsor arm chair carefullyduplicates a Rhode Islandexample that descended in theCarr family of Newport andJamestown, one of the state’soldest and most prominentfamilies. The date 1780,incised on the bottom of theseat, may well indicate thedate of origin for the chair. In its clean lines, ample proportions, and well articulated turnings, the Carr family comb-back successfully captures theessence of American Windsordesign. Frederick Duckloe &Bros., Windsor chairmakers, have adopted every detail of the original including the use of the same woodspecies and the deeply scoopedtwo-and-one-half inch plankpine seat.

This classic comb-back chair replicates one of the finest Windsor chairs made in eighteenth-century Boston. Its high back with carved ears, closely spaced spindles, boldly turned andraked arm supports and legs, and broad seat with rounded front corners distinguish the chair from

the vast majority of its counterparts. A Boston merchant, Thomas Austin (1762-1816),probably acquired the chair between 1790 and 1800. He married Martha Frost of Cambridge

in 1807 and moved into the frost family home where the chair remained throughout the nineteenth-century. A Frost family descendant bequeathed the chair to the

Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in 1982.The Austin Family Windsor is now faithfully reproduced from the original by

the Frederick Duckloe craftsmen.

This chair was first reproduced by Fred Duckloe Sr. in the mid 1950’s.Fred and his wife Pauline, were on vacation in Connecticut.

During their visit to Mystic, he was impressed by this unusual comb backWindsor with a loop in the middle of the back. He made a sketch of it on site

and reproduced it when he returned to Portland.

Windsor benches are also called settees. They have the same basic style of Windsor chairs of the period in which they were made. They are used in foyers, living rooms,

and are appropriate at the end of the bed. Our unique arm less style settee also works well at a dining table.

Reproduction from one of the two existing originals in the entrance foyer of Bishop William White’s residence in Independence National Historic Park, Philadelphia, PA.

In 1776, William White was the senior and presiding bishop of the Anglican Church in America. He lived with his large family justacross the green from Independence hall. A man of importance in the Church of England, he was nevertheless an American patriot; andit was Bishop White who, during the Revolution, established the ecclesiastical independence of the American Church from Great Britain.

The original pair of bow-backed settees was crafted by John Letchworth, the master Philadelphia chairmaker of the Revolutionary period.

We have faithfully reproduced this master’s graceful style -- nineteen bamboo-turned hickory spindles which extend through an 80-inch long ash steam bent back in continuous form -- both sides must be hand spoke shaved to their final form for

entry through the full poplar plank seat. The S-shaped arm support and the S-shaped solid cherry arms terminate in deeply carved volutes, all carefully fitted to both seat and back rail.

All six bamboo-turned legs in solid hard maple are wedged through the full saddled seat and five bold turned bamboo stretchers tietogether the unusual base. The Bishop White Settee is bonded together with glue and twenty-nine separate wedges. Seventy

individually-drilled holes are required at various angles to accept the accurately handcrafted parts.

The Continuous Arm BenchTo compliment our Continuous Arm Windsor; we can now offer the most complicated of our steam bent and deeply

saddled seat benches. Only two of our skilled chairmakers have been trained to drill the seventy-eight compound angleholes - one at a time - which are required to complete this rare model. Our final assembly requires thirty-seven special

Duckloe Arrowback BenchThere are so many good places for our Arrowback Bench. Picture yourself in a country kitchen, entrance hall,

in front of a fireplace or at the foot of a bed. This collector’s piece is an authentic reproduction of an antique Arrowback Bench that was first produced

by Duckloe craftsmen many, many years ago.

Windsor tables are quite unusual. They oftenhave leg turnings similar to chairs. Our star

table has five tapered legs and a five sided “star”top. They can be used as an occasional table inthe living room or as a bedside table. The legs

can be cut down to lower the table height.

Windsor chairs that were originally made as rockers are very rare.Modified chairs with rocker bases are usually found and can be identified because

the rockers are crudely applied and the rocker is not properly balanced.

Our scale model continuous arm chair clearly shows the construction of our

Windsor chairs and benches.

All legs, arm post, and spindle holes aredrilled completely through the seat and arms.Glue is placed in the hole, the legs, posts, and

spindles are then secured in the holes.

These parts are then split with a chisel and a wooden wedge with glue is driven down

into the split to widen the parts in theirholes creating a super tight fit.

This 18th century assembly method prevents the chair from becoming loose

over years of use.

Discover Frederick Duckloe & Bros.

45.

You are cordially invited to Frederick Duckloe & Bros. where tradition in fine handcrafted furniture has been a family tradition for four generations and nearly 150 years. Today, when mass produced furniture is standard and true craftsmanship byskilled hands is a dying trade, we are proud to offer meticulously crafted traditional American furniture reproductions.

Located in Portland, Pennsylvania, a village on the border of New Jersey, just south of the Delaware Water Gap, FrederickDuckloe & Bros. is firmly committed to many of the same techniques in the manufacture of Windsor reproductions as were used in1859 when our great grandfather founded the firm. Because of this dedication, our furniture is among the best available for purchase anywhere. Just take a look at a few of the highly regarded institutions that have entrusted us with the scaled reproduction of priceless pieces from their collections:

• Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, “Chief Justice Comb Back” armchair and “Bishop White” settee• Smithsonian Institute, National Museum of American History, Washington, DC, “Philadelphia-style Windsor”• The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, two distinctive

“New England Comb Back Windsor” chairs, Boston, Massachusetts• First Boston Corporation, Boston, Massachusetts, “First Boston” armchair• Mystic Seaport Aquarium, Mystic, Connecticut, “Lord Buckingham Windsor” chair

Our chairs can also be found in these places of distinction:• American Yacht Club, Rye, New York• Blair Academy, Blairstown, New Jersey• Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania• Francis Tavern, New York City, New York• Jimmy’s Harborside Restaurant, Boston, Massachusetts• Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey• Washington Chapel, Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania

The evolution to this high level of regard in the furniture business began in 1859 with master craftsman, Frederick Duckloewhen he fashioned, by hand, the spokes, rims, hubs, frame and body of passenger carriages. He soon began experimenting with the production of plain and fancy Windsor chairs. With success, he soon focused on the production of these chairs leaving the carriagebusiness behind. Today, his chairs are greatly sought after by serious collectors of early American furniture.

Soon after, Frederick Duckloe trained his only son, W.J. Duckloe in the trade. Soon W.J. would make is own mark by creatingfine early American reproductions of hand-turned high-poster beds, bureaus, chests and tables all of solid hardwoods with exquisite detail. Assuming this newly established family tradition, W.J. Duckloe schooled his son Frederick Duckloe in the craft of cabinet making.

Young Fredrick Duckloe remained busy in cabinetry until World War II when his talents were called upon for more patrioticefforts, mainly for the production of military drafting tables. After the war, Fred, as he was called, cultivated a highly skilledgroup of artisans to meet the demand for furniture after the war’s end. This is when he and his team focused on the reproduction of traditional Windsor chairs and settees and developed new patterns for which we are presently known.

Today, I, Frederick Duckloe, Jr. and my sister, Barbara Duckloe Townsend, are the proud custodians of this family furniture making tradition. I am a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and Barbara, is a graduate from Vassar College. In ourtime, we’ve modernized much of the business with the exception of the production of furniture.

In our factory we employ 16 artisans and their apprentices who craft fine furniture with the same spirit of tradition startedby the first Frederick Duckloe in the mid-nineteenth century. You’ll also be delighted to find, along with our collection of furniturefor sale, many of the top names in fine furniture for your home.

We hope you enjoy your next visit to Duckloe’s.
