PCC Sustainability Overview

Three certified LEED buildings in the district

Have committed to the following GHG reduction goals:Reducing GHGs 10% below 2006 levels

by 2012

40% below 2006 levels by 2030

80% below 2006 levels by 2050

Pre-consumer composting has been implemented district-wide; post-consumer is being piloted at one campus.

Diversion rate is 5 pounds per student

STARS at PCC

Being a signatory of the ACUPCC, we did not want to develop our own tracking system to report our sustainability progress with. STARS was our obvious choice.

Implementation began in summer 2012.

Tracking Data: Who, What, When and Where

Who: Sustainability Manager, departmental managers, internal Data Analysts

What: breaking up the STARS data needs into department-specific groups

When: every two years, as reporting requirements per the ACUPCC

Where: PCC, district-wide

Example of Data Collection

Methodology Used

Sustainability Manager made these spreadsheets for each subject area and sent them out to departments and managers

Departments provided data, but only the Sustainability Manager input data into the STARS tool

Lessons Learned

Start early! You can never start too early with data collection for STARS

Create foundational knowledge about STARS that is easy to understand

Be consistent with outreach and overall message

Post-Completion

We are working on putting the report on our sustainability website

Are planning to re-submit next summer

Have looked at our weakest areas in the report as a roadmap for improvement
