Principal’s Message

PCS celebrated SASS Appreciation Week last week, recognising the great work our

non-teaching staff do each and every day. We would like to extend a formal thank

you to each and every one of them who assist us in the administration of our school

and the support of both students and staff, you are all amazing!

During the last week of term, on Thursday, September 27, we will be having our

special formal Graduation Assembly for our Year 12 students to congratulate them

on their many fine achievements and farewell them from Portland Central. I began

here at the same time as they began their high school education and we all have

watched them develop into fine young men and women. Their leadership and

determination are examples for other year groups to reciprocate and we wish them

every success in their upcoming HSC examinations and future lives.

Over the past fortnight we have held our Preliminary Yearly exams for Year 11,

VALID, an online Science exam and the online NAPLAN readiness test in preparation

to move completely online in 2019.

We have very few members at the moment on our P&C so I strongly urge you to

come along to our next meeting, Tuesday October 16, and have your say in how the

school can improve and be a part of those solutions.

Emirates One & Only Excursion

Last week Portland Central students had a once in a life time opportunity to visit the Emirates One

& Only resort situated in the Wolgan Valley. Students had a tour of the facilities and enjoyed talks

from employees regarding the various departments of the Hospitality Industry.

Among the many beautiful things viewed were the staff lodgings, restaurant and kitchen, horse

paddocks, massive grounds and gardens as well as a viewing of one of the premium three bedroom

suits (at around $13,000 a night!). One of the highlights was our wallaby and wombat spotting:

there were hundreds of animals roaming the grounds! Students also hand fed the horses and had

lunch with the workers.

Portland Central School put on a show on Thursday night, August 31 with a community Science and Observation Night. Visitors were given the opportunity to explore a wide range of science and engineering experiences. Secondary students gave elephant toothpaste and pop test demonstrations and worked on interactive activities with visitors to the school. Hands on activities allowed the community to participate in viewing samples under microscopes, creating chemicals that fluoresce under black light, making teabags fly, observing plasma balls, creating volcanic eruptions and exploring the properties of sound. Extreme sound presentations of rocket launches and atomic bomb tests blew guests away as it felt as though they were really experiencing these intense experiences. Visitors also had access to the school’s large telescopes to view the wonders of the night sky as the evening progressed. It was a wonderful opportunity for children and adults alike to interact after hours, utilising the wonderful resources available at Portland Central School.

Stage 4 and Stage 5 CAPA

All students in Stage 4 and Stage 5 have been engaging in Creative and Performing Arts this term.

They have shown exuberance and creativity in their learning. Part of this programme engages the

students in practical music lessons with a professional musician twice a week. In Week 5 the

students performed in front of the entire school at our formal assembly. Many of the students

had never played a guitar before and their dedication to learning the chords and the song were

outstanding. Congratulations to all stage 4 and Stage 5. Special mention to Jac Hamilton, Anel

Selimovic, Brodie Rhodes and Katie Coleman who performed the entire song at the front of our

assembly.

Drought Relief fundraising for our farmers was a

huge success!

PCS helped our farmers in need, through fundraising and collecting donations of

non-perishable items.

Wow! We fundraised just under $700!

Thank you all, for your compassion and understanding, for farmers in need of our support,

joining us to fundraise for the Drought Relief.

Fundraising activities included a staff breakfast, a painting and drawing competition, sausage

sizzle lunch donated by Bathurst Woolworths, dress as a farmer and a farmer’s obstacle course.

A huge car load of non perishable items were driven to Bathurst to be distributed to our

farmers. Thank you everyone for your generosity! Bathurst Bunnings donated plastic tubs for the

collection of items for our farmers and we thank them!

Winners of the Farmer Drought Relief Art prizes were Zachary Wallis, Benjamin Wallis, Aaeesha

McCann, Anel Selimovic and Delaney Reinhardt – Brown. Congratulation. Bathurst Office Works

donated the prizes and we thank them for their generosity.

Students and teachers signed a lovely big card showing their artwork, thanking these businesses

for their support. Thank you all!

Final week for Ready Set School Ready Set School, first steps to Kindergarten transition is very exciting in the Family Day Care

Room, each Thursday. Last week the pre-schooler visited the Kindergarten room, sharing

activities with the K/1/2 students. Mrs Curran organised many activities to enjoy and parents

enjoyed a “Healthy Lunch Box” talk, with Tamara, who travelled from Sydney to share her

wonderful knowledge. This week is our last week and we will be visiting the Science Lab.

Mr Kumah has some great experiments in store for us. Next term our formal Kinder Prep begins

Wednesday 17 October.
