The Power Alert system is a residential demand response system introduced in 2006. It forms part of Eskom strategic commitment to keep on communicating with customers about the state of the power supply and operates in conjunction with the National Control Centre, a national key point in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, that monitors the real-time big picture of South Africa’s electricity supply status at any given moment. Broadcast on SABC, eTV and DStv, the system allows households across the countr y to par ticipate in reducing pressure on the national power gr id by switching off unnecessar y lights and appliances between 5pm and 9pm on weekdays, the period of peak demand for electr icity in the residential sector.
