I am pleased to submit my application to TU Delft MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences. As a recent graduate from Ryerson University’s Bachelor of Architectural Science, I am applying to the architecture track. In my graduate studies, I intend to focus on the architecture of conviviality, which focuses on the quality of living together in a friendly and agreeable manner. These characteristics are pertinent to the evolution of contemporary city living. I became captivated by architecture at a young age resulting in my ability to create, fix and re-purpose. In hindsight, I have experienced the presence of conviviality in Toronto neighbourhoods. Through my studies, I have discovered how few communities, in 21st century North America, particularly those of sprawl, have experienced this same presence. I seek to be submersed in an environment that will be an inspirational change to my perception of architecture and urban design. During a collaborative exercise between Ryerson and Delft students, I became intrigued by the idea of attending TU Delft. The collaboration focused on urban agriculture, walk-ability and cycle-ability in Toronto and Amsterdam. Cities in the Netherlands are an outstanding precedent for the architecture of conviviality. In pursuit of an encompassing education in architecture, the urban context becomes fundamental to architecture and its dissertation. Delft can provide me with this. Within the architecture track, I would focus on urban development and community structure. In my undergraduate studies, I was inspired by the idea of “community” and through selected courses I have gathered proficient experience with construction and detailing. My thesis will explore the typology of the future urban landscape by incorporating sustainability and livability though infill development. Municipal policies need to be incorporated into the future urban fabric, as many typologies in North America need a convivial “fix”. These failed neighbourhoods are the product of segregated development where viable and sustainable development should have occurred. I will pursue an answer to creating a community typology that is convivial and allows for individual choice, while being respectful of our surrounding environment.

Contribution:Researching Newfoundland, Botwood and Public installation projects; design charettes at E.R.A. Architects; finalizing design on site w/ input from the Botwood community; working drawings; materials and supplies; construction; organized ice candle installation for kick-off event; documented final product; presentation drawings.

Description:On the Bay of Exploits in the north-central sector of Newfoundland, the community is historically a hub for aviation and industrial exporting. Botwood today retains traces of its rich history and culture and the Viewfinder frames and celebrates these with views to the historic flying boat on site and to a historic crash site in the bay. The Viewfinder acts as a gathering and rest point on the peninsula used in all seasons.

Level:4th Year Architectural Design Specialization - Final ProjectOption Studio: Poetics of Construction

Date:Jan 2014 to April 2014

Supervisor:Garth Norbraten, [email protected]

Description:In this studio we examined methods of construction and detailing for the creation of an off-campus university facility. The facility was to house seminar and conference spaces as well as student residences and guest accommodations for visiting lecturers. With this project I focused on the community, implementing a community garden, greenhouse and gallery into the facility. In regard to formality and materiality, my concept arose from an idea about the longevity of the facility and the creation of a sum of parts where program is broken up into separate buildings and made specifically to their function. Inspiration was derived from the images below as well as a drawing by Christine Ödlund titled Greetings from Uranus Madame Blavatsky and the reconstruction of the Szatmáry Palace by MARP

Level:4th Year Architectural Design SpecializationOption Studio: Local Food LandscapesUrban agriculture initiative with Rye Home Grown

Date:Sep 2013 to Nov 2013

Supervisor:Mark Gorgolewski, [email protected]

Description:How do we house agriculture in an accelerating urban environment? Urban agriculture is growing in popularity, most effective when implemented into a community scenario. Rye home grown continues to develope systems on the Ryerson Campus and would benefit from increased growing space and community involvement.

The development of the growing space is accelerated through the use of the UUA’s (Units for Urban Agriculture). The Sears parking lot site is an example of a development site that has been purchased and will sit unused for a certain number of years, in this case ten. These sites have great potential for urban agriculture. UUA’s are designed as greenhouses which fit into individual parking spaces. They can easily be deployed in stages and in any amount. After their time on the site comes to an end they can be moved to any other parking lot or street parking space. These units can phase out the density of parking in the city center as we evolve to use more sustainable means of transportation.

The UUA can stand amongst vehicles or be placed in a series of patterns to create dynamic spaces. These modular, versatile structures can be used as information booths, officespaces, study spaces or galleries. They can be combined with modular planters and outdoor seating which can be stored within the frame structures during off seasons. The initial phasing of the Sears parking lot site occurs where there is the highest visibility. Information and social units as well as educational growing units can be used here to provoke interest in the project and encourage new participants from the school and the community.

Units for Urban Agriculture

As the project is further developed, individual UUA’s can be privately invested into. A participant is given the essential unit structure which can be developed in terms of interior components, interest, or availability of means. UUA’s can house a range of food production from simple pop bottle planters to hydroponic leafy greens to intensive aquaponic systems.

The structure is a simple quintessential frame made of aluminium L brackets which the components fit into. Thereis flexibility in the enveloping materials. Pictured is a primarilypolycarbonatecladunitwiththermallymodifiedwoodpanelingonthe base as well as corrugated plastic roofing. The roof planecollects water into an interior basin. There are sliding doors and windows and a fold out ramp for accessibility. The form and size of the units are designed in a way that they do not shade their neighbors.

after many formal iterations the quintessential pitched roof prevailed

Description:How do we create the office of the future?A dense city office tower which functions like businesses on city streets; reuniting the people with the streets and opening up to the ground plane; connecting the people with businesses, amenities, landscapes, and each other; respecting the city, the landscape, and the individual. The tower arises as a product of it’s context.

Professional: Design + Build + Grow (DBG) food cart for The Stop’s Night Market 2014http://design-build-grow.tumblr.com/http://nightmarket.thestop.org/

Group:DBG Founders: Margot de Man, Mark Grimsrud, Sarah Ives, Ron Noble, Newton XianFrame Construction Assistance: Arc Angel Welding Services

Role:Team Leader

Contribution:As team leader I managed the production of the project and took part in all aspects of design and construction.

Level:Student Initiated design-build upon graduation

Date:April 2014 to June 2014

Supervisor:Mentorship given by Mark Gorgolewski, [email protected]

Description:The concept of DBG’s food cart is rooted in the ability to adapt, reuse and re-imagine existing materials and to push the boundaries of innovative sustainable design. Our aim was to promote the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in an urban setting. We hoped to embody into the design and construction of our cart a framework founded on a shared ethos of nature, food and community holism. The Design consists of a welded steel frame, salvaged wood and water bottles. The caps of the bottles are bolted to the frame and the bottles planted with various herbs can be screwed onto the frame, used as garnish for events and then be distributed to serve as personal self watering herb containers.
