Metropolitan Parkstad Limburg has asked us to develop a concept for a mine track in the region of Heerlen. We want to give this mine track a new function based on thoroughly research into the history of the area. In this way we hope to create an integrated landscape system.

Our interventions in the landscape will always be in con-text with the local history, but it should also provide the landscape of an extra level of significance. We try to inte-grate the cultural and historical function of the landscape with their economic, recreational, ecological, educational functions of the present and in the past.

While working on our concept we try to take into account all levels of the public domain: the large strategic choices as well as the micro level of the individual objects. The area gets a clear starting and ending point. There it should be a connection to the Grunemetropoolroute and Carbooncy-cleroute and of course the local tourist route through the village of Hoensbroek, where the spatial structure refers clear and recognizable to the former mine railway.

It should be an area which can be explored and which trig-gers you; where in the future you can discover something new in every season; a place where new rituals can be performed, where special effects are present, like the first vertically museum in the mine region in Belgium.

We won the second place for this competition, in coop-eration with Studio Berg, commissioned by Parkstad Lim-burg.

Leidseplein urgently needs to be renewed. The square now looks disorderly and is in some places quite run down. Especially the pedes-trians have not enough space because of cars and bicycles are often parked in the center of the square.

The square is the vibrant heart of Amsterdam’s nightlife. The restaurants, theaters, shops and hotels attract millions of people every year. Be-sides all these movements there are business-es established and people are also living there.

In the future the pedestrian will be the most im-portant aspect at the Leidseplein so it should be easily accessible. The Leidseplein, should be a place where people want to spend some time and where the visitor feels welcome. The interior of the square is well organized, so there is a square formed with a high-quality appearance.

The Atlas City Parks Amsterdam shows the di-versity of the parks in the city. Each park has its own context, both spatial and social-eco-nomic. The experience of the user is different for each group and can change each year by new trends and new use of parks.

This atlas provides an overview of a number of spatial elements, accessibility, facilities and visitors. I worked with a team on this project, while I was working at the municipality of Am-sterdam.

w h at : er was eens...Clothes that blow in the wind bring you back to your childhood, wandering in Mom’s fresh washed clothes, curious by the movements of the flapping material and the world behind this wall of clothes.

The clothesline runs through the landscape and cut off the top of Vlieland. The clothesline comes out of the water, goes over the beach, the dunes, and the beach again and disappears in the water.

While the scale of this installation makes you feel small, the clothesline on the island makes the place a homely space. The wind, which spreads the smell of the clothes, has also an important role.

This line accentuates the contour of the island and shows how the wind blows over the island. Visi-tors can step under the clothesline and then get into another world. The white sheets absorb the continuously changing daylight and the shadow moves the whole time over the beach and water.

Rijkswaterstaat asked DRO to create a plan for the area around the Gaasperdammerweg. This plan is to create a roof on top of the tunnel, which is planned over the A9 highway at the location Gaasperdammerweg.

Roughly consists The Gaasperdammerweg of three atmospheres:

From Holendrecht North till the railway Am-sterdam-Utrecht. The highway cuts through the area Amstel III accompanied by the wide waterways and lots of trees like Populus Alba.

Between the railway and subway Gaasperplas the highway is tunneled. The roof of the tun-nel could be a very nice promenade with lots of greenery and seats, but for safety reasons it also should have an open character.

East of the subway the highway gets above sea level again in a park scenic area with small groups of the Populus Alba and individual buildings in between, after which it crosses the river Gaasp: this should be seen as the green entrance of the eastern part of the South east part of town.

The green zoom has to get redesigned be-couse of the plans for the dock. Trough the green zoom runs a verry importand cycleroute wich connect beatrixpark with station Rai. Be-tween the steps of green is a clear structure .

We live in a very visual focused society and we all find it very important that our environ-ment and surroundings are designed in a nice way. Actually our eye is getting more important than the ear; still our sound has a lot to do with how we experience the environment and how we feel in it.

Environmental sound is in my opinion an ig-nored design component; it is seen as some-thing negative. I would like to approach sounds as something positive and use it as a design tool (which ad an extra quality to the public space).

Sounds, rhythm, decibels and vibrations, are the invisible elements that we can move through in the public domain between move-ments. These elements I try to capture in a de-sign assignment for the Sijpesteijntunnel, the Leidseveer Tunnel and the Westplein.

I see this place as a gate or entrance to the city.I want to create a space with more mean-ing, a place with a quality experience. Now, I think it is quiet an unpleasant space.

In my opinion can the visual - and the auditory aspect and also the light provide a combination that contributes positively to the quality of this environment.

In the object I want to expose the visitor directly to the everyday sounds such as the tram that runs over it, cars, cyclists and pedestrians but without visual image.

When there is little or no view or visibility our hearing is going to focuses automatically. What does not get noticed in the daily life suddenly gets the attention, so you can experience of the rhythm of that particular place and stands in relationship with the environment.

Later in the object you do get the view, but this time without sound. In many cases people see sound as something negative. but silence is perhaps just as inconvenient. In the scientific literature is frequently described that paranoia can get caused as a result of absolute silence.

As a designer, I also wanted to influence other senses than just vision. In other words, let ex-perience the world through your ears.

I designed a view platform in a way that it has to give people directions how to use it trough form. The slanted walls give the feeling of di-rectional pathways. The holes are details; they are extended from the walls giving the feeling where not to walk.

The platform rises on the highest point on the right –hand side of the object; this enables a greater viewing platform for the ocean vista. The underside of the platform is a multifunc-tional place with the possibility of becoming a bar, shop or information centre.

For this project I explored the site on a different way, trough all diffent kind of objects I found. The most objects I found were very weird, and weird that’s what St Kilda is all about. Objects witch don’t belong there and this is a thing witch is really important for the rest of my concept.

I want to give people the experience of the other way around, or things that won’t belong there, like my feeling when I explored St Kilda.

I want to swop the functions from land and wa-ter. Put the functions from water in land and the functions from land in the water, and by functions I mean skating walking playing and bathing.

3D model wich is inspired by the grow proces of gras. When you are lying with your head in the grass, you see the grass shivering becau-se of the wind.

The object gives you the same experience when you are clime of sitting on it.

The object can be put in every grass area. It’s a great experience for children but also adults are getting a message trough the object.

Utrecht is in a competition to be the cultural capital of Europe. It was an idea to pull lines from all the cultural places in Utrecht to the domsquare.

Together these lines will form different areas on the square and get their own cultural func-tion.

The street where I lived (kanaalstraat Utrecht) is one big chaos, like a public playground, where people play with their cars and bikes all over, and I play my part in it and making my own parking places.
