AUPIODisk top audio specially designed for piano music

Personal workNov.2015

This project was directed by chief designer of YAMAHA, which was part of a course work. It aimed at designing personalized audio for different users, which is also the main focus of YAMAHA. I selected users who enjoy piano solo and designed AUPIO for them. This product not only matches with piano style but also brings users with immersive experience as if they are in front of the stage.

CONCEPT GENERATION

Music appreciation is sometimes quite a personal activity. With the deeper understanding of music, musicians tend to view their instruments as part of themselves, thus the instruments should be specially designed for them. It is the same with audio. Disk top audio is the most common media through which individuals appreciate their styles of music. In this project, I tried to design personal disk top audio for specifi c type of music - piano solo played by Ludovico Einaudi. I analysed his most typical pieces of piano solo and designed my disk top audio - AUPIO. The following are the designing concept generation.

AUPIOPROTOTYPEThe prototype was made with density foam and hot-melt cutter. First, I drew the outline of the audio on a board, then cut the board with knife and fit i t onto a density foam. Then the foam was cut with hot-melt cutter to make the basic shape of the product. Finally, the coarse model was polished for details. And the final prototype was connected to music playing devices.

TASK 1 - VOLTeamwork with Mi Sun, Boning GaoNov.2015

This task was directed by designer of Shimadzu. Shimadzu had a problem that the fire extinguishers in its newly built research center looked quite ugly. So we designed a box for the fi re extinguishers in order that it looks better and be more convenient to use.

TASK 2 - LINE AND SURFACEPersonal workDec.2015

This task was directed by Hideichi Misono, general designer of Toyota. This was part of a course work. In this task I tried to create 3D lines and surface that appear on a car. First, I drew the side view and plan view of a curve. Then the 3D curve was made accordng to the two views. Next, I designed two surface that cross the created the line.

Interactive keys that make office life more active

Teamwork with Ruifeng Chen, Qiongyi Pan, IrisJul.2015 - Aug.2015

This project was cooperated between TU/e and IDI. It was a designing summer school. We explored experiential design landscapes and business process design in this project. Aimed at changing the lifestyle of office workers, we designed a product named Keymove. The main concept of the product is to integrate interactive technology into normal office life and make it more active. I was the team leader and participated in all the process.

RESEARCH & USER UNDERSTANDINGFirst, we did research about people's sitting habit. The result suprised us that sitting has taken the most time of people's life. So, we want to make a change. We did stakeholder mapping to understand people's experience in offi ce. And we found that the main reasons for them to sit for long time are no time, no interest, no energy and no idea for what to do.

BRAINSTORM &PROTOTYPE MAKINGWe did brainstorm with key words. The ideas were voted and the keyboard chair was selected. An prototype chair was made with three pressure sensors connected to three keys on thee keyboard. User can press the sensor instead of the keys to type. The technology was realised with Arduino.

TESTING & DATA COLLECTIONMany people participated in the test. They were asked to type some words with the keyboard chair, and after that each of them did a subjective assessment about the product. The results of the total test is shown below. We made further improvements based on these results.

FINAL PRODUCTEverything can be a keymove

With the data collected from the test, we found that the preferences for the positions and the keys vary largely from people to people. Therefore, fi nally we made the keyboard chair into a broader concept that everything can be a keymove. People just need to put the sensor of a key on an object and turn it into a key. Keymove becomes part of daily life.

IMAGINGEXPERIENCE OF 2020Images with texture for children to touch the nature

Team work with Ruifeng Chen, Kaiqi Dai, Yiqiao LinNov. 2015

This project was directed by designers from Nikon. It was a course work. Our team explored how imaging experience will be like in the year 2020 based on the most advanced technologies. Based on the concept generated, we designed product for targeted users. I participated in the brainstorm and contributed to persona and scenario making.

TECHNOLOGY & BRAINSTORM We analyzed more than 80 advanced technlogies and grouped them. Based on the groups, we did brainstorm to explore imaging experience in 2020. For each idea, we tried to figure out its supporting technologies. Then we picked the best idea and designed product for targeted users.

PRODUCT DESIGN

The product was designed according to the requirements of our targeted user - Cherry. It allows her to touch the nature with vivid texture. The following are instructions about how it is used.

SCENARIOCherry likes to go to the zoo with her father on weekends. She likes to have close relationship with animals and plants. However, sometimes she is not allowed to touch them. She was quite depressed about this. Then, one day, her father bought her a board. She can use it to veiw and touch the nature. All the pictures in the board have vivid texture. Cherry has found a new world to explore now.

Smart planting system for family

Teamwork with Jingwei Lin, Rui Chen, Yihe, WangAug. 2015-Sept. 2015

This was summer project directed by the CEO of Fang Da Intelligence Control. We explored how intelligence control technology could be applied to agriculture. We focused our attention on family planting. The current plant incubator was improved by us with mobille control, which make it possible that people can grow and sell their vegetables with their spare time. I was the team leader and focused on the UI design of the application and the plant incubator making.

CONCEPT This system allows people to use their spare time to grow vegetables. When they have extra products, they can also sell them through the application. Besides, users can share their experience online to encourage more people to grow vegetables and be green. The final aim is to create smart agriculture system for city.

MOMENTA headset that selectively reduces noise

Personal workNov. 2014-Dec. 2014

This project was carried out by myself beyound class. I did a survey about people's attitute towards noise. Also, I interviewed some users about the active noise cancelling headsets(ANCH). The results of the survey indicated that the current ANCH needed to be improved and redesigned. Therefore, I designed a headset that can locate the position of the noise and cancel them selectively.

Page 27: Portfolio-Yiping Kong

yiping's

PORTFOLIO 27

INVESTIGATIONIt is often the case that when we are doing our work, noise from the outside world keeps on disturbing us. Aimed at fi nding out more about this problem, I carried out an investigation about it to see how serious it is and how people are dealing with it. The questionaire is shown on the left and the results are listed below.

PRODUCT & TechnologyHuman ear is a complicated organ and it receives limited range of sound. Sounds of different spectrums gives people different feelings. Usually, human voice and music are desired and needed. But it is always diffi cult to get pure voice or music.

By swiping on this screen, user can control the volume of selected noise

We can see from the chart above that noise that has similar spectrum with human voise is more disturbing. Thus, our product should be able to recognize sound with very specifi c characristcs in order that similar sound can be seperated. Current technologies such as Wavelet transform theory might be applied.

When turned on, the two tiny projector can project interactive map on any flat surface. User can view different sound sources and their volume

User can select which noise to manege

TASK 1 SCREEN OR KEYResearch work 2014.Mar - 2014.May

Although most of the market share has been taken by touch screen mobile phone, traditional key mobile phone still has its targeted users. Besides, problems of touch screen often occur, such as low sensitivity and low accuracy. So I designed this experiment to compare the two types of mobile phone from ergonomic point of view.
