BA (Hons) Music (Classical with Production)

Please send the following items for assessment:

Classical Music requirements (performers): • A video (no longer than 10 minutes) of you performing two contrasting pieces that demonstrate

your musical strengths. For all instruments/voice, apart from piano and guitar, at least one of your chosen pieces should have piano accompaniment. Two contrasting pieces may be included but at least one piece should be accompanied by piano or other instruments (e.g. string quartet).

Classical Music requirements (composers): • A portfolio of compositions (Send fully notated scores and, if appropriate, recordings of your

compositions of no longer than 10 minutes). The portfolio should consist of at least two contrasting compositions (or part thereof).

• A video (no longer than 10 minutes) of you performing one piece, of at least grade 5 standard, that demonstrates your musical strengths. You can perform your own composition but please send a fully notated score for assessment.

Production requirements: • A portfolio of no longer than 10 minutes. Ideally this should contain original music that you have

written, recorded and produced. If applying for the BA please include one notated example of your music.

• You should:o Declare that the work is your own.o Make clear what equipment/resources you used (including samples).o Make clear what your role / involvement was.

Please also send: • A short video with your answers to the following questions (please speak to camera)

o Why do you want to study at Leeds College of Music?o Who are your influences as a performer/producer/composer and why?o What music are you currently listening to and why?o Why should we offer you a place? What can you bring to the conservatoire?o Please give us an example of something you have found particularly challenging in your

studies, and how you have met the challenge.o Please tell us about any experience that you have of playing in an ensemble/choir/band or

orchestra? Have you played any chamber music? How has this improved your musicianship?

o To help us assess your music theory knowledge, please identify and describe THREE interesting features of one of your audition pieces (these can be harmonic, rhythmic, or melodic).

o What do you want to do once you've finished your studies?

Across all elements of the audition process we are looking for evidence of individual musical skills, creativity and enthusiasm for the subject.

Please remember: • For Popular Music only: Your lyric sheets (if applicable) and any vocals featured in recordings

should be in English.• If you are performing with an ensemble, please identify yourself to camera.• If you are applying for a combined degree please remember to send the audition materials

required by both your major and minor pathway.• Video files (e.g. performances, answers to our questions) must be formatted as .avi or .mpeg4• Audio files (e.g. portfolios) must be high quality .mp3 files (192kbps)

Entry Requirements (2017 entry) • A strong academic record, normally including Music. International students study a wide range

of curriculums, so upon receiving your application we will individually assess whether yourqualifications meet our entry requirements.

• ABRSM Grade 5 Theory qualification or equivalent.• ABRSM Grade 8 Practical standard in principal instrument/voice (assessed at audition).• Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide acceptable evidence of

their English language proficiency, as will students who require a Tier 4 Visa to study.

Submitting your materials: Instructions on how to send us your files will be included in your formal invitation to submit them. Once we have reviewed your videos and/or portfolio we may arrange a short interview with you via phone or Skype.
