Ahmedabad city has always been in need of large open public place. However, some markets serves as public places. Today, public places are classified within shopping malls for many social activities of recreation. These malls are questioned for many reasons including their value for neighbourhood in an Indian context. With this understanding, the idea of creating relationship between a market and user response is a key to understand the publicness of market space in City of Ahmedabad. The research thesis is an attempts to create the user response in the market places in market spaces to create the framework for the success and failure of a PLACE.

Model Fire Station Design Concept for Fire brigade department of Ahmedabad- Gujarat Final year (Semester 9)
Faculty Guidance: Ar. Gurjeetsigh Matharoo , Dr. Bimal Patel, Prof. Miki Desai, Riyaz Taiyyabji
Project Brief: - Emergency response service- Housing for workers
The idea of creating fire station begins with the notion of creating a service building to our city. Fire stations in our cities have always been looked at as a need of the city and dont have architectural character to its existence. The design proposal was molded in such a manner that it creates a prototype for it to be established a new language for a fire station in the city. The hypothetical site was chosen in Naroda to explore the idea of Modal Fire station. The program was made with the consideration of fire station head quarter to explore and understand the complexity of the project. The program involves diverse functions that come under fire station i.e. Emergency first aid, control room, rest room & many other emergency services and residential quarters for various users - fire mans & officers.
The design proposal was conceptually evolved around the building services and functional cores. In fire station the fire trucks are the most important part of building making process. Hence, the dimensional requirement of the fire truck was studied. The functional core of the building was provided such that it can accommodate two fire trucks in a functional core. The functional core of the building was served by a service bay which involves various building services, Fire machine services, equipment areas etc. Repetition of the functional core and service core has carried forward vertically to accommodate the requirement of the residential quarters. The positioning of the cuboid mass was such that it leaves enough ground for various mock-up training in the back side and buffer spaces in the front side.
There are various masses have been carved out from the rigid cuboid space to create an experiential quality in the building. The doubled volume areas that overlook the primary spaces allow the ease of communication and provide a scale to the building as a whole. The corridor area being the main spine of the building cut across and serves the ease of access to tackle any emergency. The detailed architectural expression of a service building was achieved by providing various climatic louvers, cross bracing for earth quack resistance etcThe Steel as a building material was chosen to create an architectural expression and allow the flexibility of space.
The process of the designing such buildings have answered a very interesting question of: how the concept of living space and service space made in a cohesive environment?

Direction : Part I - Understanding the physical context of the site: Topography and Climate. Architectural responses to these which are required for habitation.- Understanding of the need for public space across various scales. Architectural articulation of this into the site plan - Schematic development of the house type, with particular emphasis on the gradations of spaces between public and private and inside and outside. Understanding of the relationship between house and street.- Development of the site plan in response to the above with the further integration of ideas on rainwater harvesting and drainage- Development of Architectural Elements: Wall sections, column details, door and window, and/or any other details critical to the architectural character of the design.
Part II
The second part of the studio will focus on the Architectural Resolution of the various types of house units. This will be with respect to:- Architectural Character: The definition of spaces with respect to their use and position e.g. entrance, courtyards, stair-cases, etc. This will be considered both at the unit and the site level. - Architectural Character: With respect to material and structure.
Intent: To study the built environment as a relationship between built form, physical context (climate, topography etc.) and society and the resultant ideas related to space making. The Project: Requires a group of three students to develop the site for the inhabitation for a total of 75 government employees and their families. Of these 50 will be forest workers (working for the care, preservation and study of the reserved forests) while the remaining 25 will be health officers working in the town and the more rural areas around, on issues of public health. The forest workers have a more permanent presence and will be stationed here for up to 5 years with their Families, while the Health workers will come and go as they will be required to move from town to town, and village to village in the district. As a result two distinct types of houses will be required, along with other facilities as listed below:

Site: Located in Bhavnagar district, a few kilometers away from the main town with the same name, Shi-hore is a settlement that nestles into between the river to its west and a range of steep hills that encircle it on three sides from North to South through the east. The former capital of the Gohil Rajputs is a fortified town, it has a pattern of streets that follows the natural topography to give the town its distinct character. The town has a population of approx 47,000.
The site itself lies to the East and South East of the Darbargadh, at the base of the hills. Measuring about 5800sqm, the site is divided into two by a path that runs through it. The smaller part is relatively flatter while the larger part is steeply sloped rising up the side of the hill behind the Darbargadh. This path is also the access to the site and its connection to the town.

Architectural Design Studio Iii : 2010-11Exploration of Material - Form - Structure Institute : Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University
Faculty : Riyaz Tayyibji, Sankalpa, Ayaz, Pathik (T.A.)
Brief In nature form and structure are inseparable. In architecture, the expressive quality of built forms is rooted in structure which is essential in making of architecture. Structure orders the distribution of matter. It varies from material to material, allowing for different distributions of mass and void, leading to a variety of textures and grain, light and shadow, scale and proportions. It is from this perspective that structure gives meaning to material. The studio systematically explores possibility to learn through forms in nature using realistic sketching and abstract drawing in order to unearth ideas that form the basis of an architectural conceptualization. This studio looks closely at the relationship between material, structure and form. To explore the understanding of this The entire studio is based on various exersices.
