About Me

My name is Owanari Membere and I am an undergraduate student studying BSc Product Design Engineering at Brunel University London.I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and have lived in both Lagos and London. This gave me exposure to Art & Design as well as an understanding of the contrasting characteristics of design within different cultures.I’ve always been interested in Transgenerational & Inclusive Design because it carries everyone along, so everyone can enjoy the same products.

Basic Sketching TechniquesPERSPECTIVE CUBES

Getting the correct perspective is important in design sketching because it helps designers understand three-dimensional drawings. Two point perspective is the easiest way to construct basic three-dimensional shapes.

Explanatory & Instructional StoryboardingStoryboarding (also known as explanatory & instructional drawing) is an important aspect of design process. It documents and explains how a product will be used or handled. It usually comes in the packaging when an item is purchased and is very popular with designers because text is rarely needed when a story board is available.

Rendering 1

HIGH GLOSS PLASTICRendering is very important in design because it helps designers to show the material that would be used to make the product. The material is always considered before the manufacturing proces begins and rendering is one of the first steps for picking materials.

Explanatory & Instructional Storyboarding

POWER DRILL

My chosen product to do an exploded diagram was a power drill.

This was quite tricky as there were many components and the drill had an odd shape to it.

Getting the scale correct was difficult but necessary as the diagram looked off-kilter when the scale was wrong.

CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PHONE FOAM MODELS’ FEATURES

After getting the bare structure of the phone cut out using a hot wire cutter and templates, the model had to be sanded down and little details were added through chamfering edges and more.

TESTING PROCESS

After building the tool handle I used a pair of gloves and slipped in wooden splints to match up with each finger. This restricted my movement which helped me test the handle for inclusivity and think of solutions to any problems that may arise. Here are a series of photos to illustrate the testing process.

Page 39: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

37 38

I noticed that the width of the handle was too small making it harder to grip. For the next model I will have to increase the width.

The back of the handle was extremely curved which made it difficult for the hand to rest comfortably. When designing the next model I will consider making the back surface flatter.

Addressing ScenariosTHE SCENARIO: LIGHTING POVERTYElectricity is a global issue because a lot of people do not have any.

Developing an appropriate lighting/ electricity solution that can benefit everyone is the objective of this brief. Here are a few of the ideas that i came up with and my final solution.

This is a big strain on their daily lives because once a certain time is reached and it is dark outside they are restricted from doing tasks and this is a big hindrance for the young and old.

DESIGN FOR CLEAN WATER SUPPLY

Page 48: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

47

Summary & ResearchClean Water is a necessity for living. If clean water was always readily available and accessible, a lot of the illness and disease that we have around today would be non-existent. This is because these illness come from the lack of pure clean water.

Factors to consider when looking for clean water solutions include:1. Scale2. Accessibility3. Diseases4. Transport5. Filtration systems6. Target population

“ USE AS LITTLE ENERGY AS POSSIBLE ”

“ MORE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND PROCESSES ”

My group members and I tackled the difficult task of deciding what we were going to design and who we were designing for. We chose a scenario involving people on the move who have bodies of water around them that aren’t clean but can be purified for drinking.

Page 49: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

RESEARCH

1. SCALEIt is harder to produce clean water on a large scale but by reducing your target population you can increat clean water production. This small scale solution can then be introduced to larger masses which solve the problem step by step.

4. TRANSPORTAs I mentioned before in Accessibility. Dry, desert-like places are the hardest to solve water supply issues therefore being able to transport clean water is very important. Trucks and water tanks should always be readily available for supply to these areas.

2. ACCESSIBILITYTo produce clean water, you have to have access to bodies of water. This is why it is harder to make solutions for dry, desert-like places.

5. FILTRATION SYSTEMSWater Purification processes like desalanation and reverse osmosis are vital for pure water production.Other methods like UV radiation and material filtration are also helpful for killing germs and taking out solid impurities.

3. DISEASESWhen dealing with water supply, water-borne diseases are very common. Contaminated water can cause Cholera, Typhoid Fever and Hepatitis A and many more.In order to avoid contracting these illnesses water purification is very important.

6. TARGET POPULATIONThe target population determines how the water supply needs to be delivered or readily available. For example, a scenario involving disaster relief will need portable carriers as they may be moving around a lot. And something that will last long term as the situation may or may not be resolved quickly.

RECYCLING MAGNETSRecycling magnets is currently under development and is a relativelynew process. As this advances, it couldbe incorporated into the design meaning that new magnets do not have to be used in these bottles.

RECYCLING ALUMINIUMRecycled aluminium body reduces environmental impact and it obeys the Golden Rule of Eco-design that energy consumption through production should be minimised. Its is a cheaper alternative and aluminium gets more tenacious the more it is exposed to elements. This means that the bottle gets stronger over time and will not need to be replaced often if not at all.The tough structure of the bottle promote a longer product life and allows the bottle to be reused and repurposed, also fitting in with the Golden Rules.

SURFACE COATINGSurface coating on the outside of the bottle body protects it from wear, further extending the product’s life.

BLOW MOLDINGThe blow moulded body of the bottle promotes easier recycling due to the lack of joints and welds which would all have to be separated during the recycling process.

UV INFORMATIONThe rechargeable battery within the solenoid eliminates the need for replacing disposable batteries as those have a short usable life. This ensures the UV element will function for a longer time awnd there will be no need for the user to tamper with it. This also coincides many of the Golden Rules, for example - reducing toxic disposable batteries in land fill, while introducing a closed loop for the harmful chemical contents of the rechargeable battery.

FIXPERTSTEAM DIG-IT

Fixperts promotes creativity and teaches designers to lend a helping hand to those that need it. Communicating with clients and understanding their needs and specification led to designs solely made for them - fixing the problem. This project was documented in a short film but here are some of the highlights.

Brief “I DON’T LIKE TO GIVE IN. YOU’VE GOT TO KEEP GOING, OTHERWISE YOU’LL SEIZE UP COMPLETELY...” - VALERY

Valery loves gardening and can’t seem to do much of it anymore because it hurts to move like she used to.

She’s had a knee replacement and a hip replacement. Valery has also got Sciatica (a pain caused by compression of the sciatic nerve - this nerve runs from the pelvis, down the legs to the feet) a trap nerve in her back. It hurts her to move around a lot which makes it difficult to do a lot of things especially gardening.

Hearing about Valery’s difficulty with gardening, her passion for the hobby still remained. In order to help Valery continue gardening we thought of the most strenous aspects of gardening and tried to resolve them.

Page 58: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

57

Ideation & DevelopmentTo start off the project, we researched aspects of gardening that required bending down and bending of the back. Digging seemed to be quite popular as one of the most strenous activities as well as picking up pots and plants.

The team and I began to individually ideate ways we could lessen the strain of picking up pots and digging. Here are a few of the ideas we talked through.

The Fixperts project is a combination of the last two esquisses- INCLUSIVE DESIGN and ADDRESSING SCENARIOS.

Page 59: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

58

Storyboard

After we agreed to focus on digging we planned a storyboard of how the shovel would be used and how it will reduce pressure on the back.

Page 60: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

59

Further Ideation & Development

After building and testing this prototype, the test failed. This was because there was no structural base to support the torque of the shovel. The shovel kept rolling around.

Because of the instability, the shovel couldn’t be useed to dig deeper than 2cm and it was very hard to empty the soil off the shovel

Page 61: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

60

BUILDING PROCESS

Page 62: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

61

Final Design

After the first prototype failed, we decided to design the product with a stable base. This base prevents the shovel from losing balance and putting strain on Valery’s back.

The green base and rotating fixture was made from layered (to make it sturdy) plastic sheets. The black casing for the shaft of the shovel was 3D printed.

Page 63: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

61 62

We made the shovel ourselves after testing out different shovel head shapes to determine which ones dig deeper and more efficiently. We made the shovel have a pointed end because it was the most efficient for digging. Above the final product can be seen.

Page 64: PORTFOLIO€¦ · Schematic Drawing Exploded Diagram Storyboard Green Credentials Brief - Meet Valery Ideation & Development

63

User Testing and Interaction

After testing out the final product, Valery said she loved it and it really did take the strain off her back because she no longer had to bend over to dig. She found it easy to dig deep into the soil and deposit the dug up soil.

She did say that in order for it to be even more effective, the rotationg joint should spin in 360 degrees motion which will make it easier to deposit the dug up soil in different places.

Overal she was very pleased with the product and felt it would really help her and even others to keep gardening.

REFLECTIONThrough esquisses and other projects included in this portfolio I was able to improve my understanding and skills in design. The excersise helped me cultivate new techniques through perspective drawings, ideation, exploded diagrams, hero images and more. I have developed my own style of sketching which I still hope to improve on as I continue with design. I also learned to work well in groups and connect with others in order to create new and innovative ideas and designs.I can now effectively and confidently present design ideas and projects that are easy for myself and others to understand.
