Wetland/Mire(thick substrate)
Wet meadow (medium substrate)
Dry/hay meadow (thin substrate)
Here, different thicknesses of substrate correspond to topogra-phy to control water retention and therefore vegetation type.
By manipulating topography and material properties, i can control vegetation types, which provides an opportunity to produce a more diverse ecology of flora.
The Namib Desert Beetle collects water on its back, which is drained to its mouth using gravity.

Water droplets form on the hydrophillic peaks, until they grow large enough to fall into the hy-drophobic trough and drain efficiently.
Both overall topography and mi-croscopic texture are important in controlling the water.

“We’re set up here to avoid
the police, so that the homeless don’t have to
worry... opposite is the only homeless shelter in Rhyl.
There’s only eight beds - they have to kick you
out after five days...”
“We use this
route to get from home to the cinema...
they should just rip it all up, back to how it
used to be - just flatten it all down...”
“its all just druggies over here...
people come up from Manchester, Brum and
stoke to deal... All the Rhyl people live in the
hills.”
“Busi-ness is quite good... It is quite boring here.”
“The first thing
you see when you enter Rhyl is two
abandoned build-ings. Apparently,
one is being demol-ished in a week, and
its a grade two listed building.”

“The huts were
knocked down, now its just a fake
landscape - modernisation for the worse. I walk my dog here
every day in the summer, and not at all in the winter, it’s too
windy. ASBOs cause limitation after
nine.”
