In this project I used the Deamiliarization theory to answer the queencounter the dilemma o modernizing or preserving tradition? De

as an architectural theory is evolved out o (or a reaction upon) Criticby and it deals with this dilemma. Most vital to the theory is the asswhen an object is placed outside o its context, is transormed and/o

new context, the object becomes unamiliar, this increases the dicuo perception. The process o perception is the aesthetic end in itselprolonged.(Shklovsky, 1917). The approach is however gentle and s

a mere copy o the past that will ail the moment o perception, becawont be drawn to the object, but will be bored with overamiliarizatio

Xploded Siheyuan is my graduation projectsituated in China, Beijing and based on Chineseculture and its current development. The basic

principle o the design and research is thetension between tradition and modernity.

The design consists o 19 rectangle volumes

with square ground oors, spread out in apublic area between Tiananmensquare and a

traditional hutong-area: Dazhalan. The grandcommunist public spaces and streets like the

    Tiananmensquare and its adjacent boulevards

contrast to the introvert hutong areas, wherepublic space consist o narrow streets and alleys.

The public space directed by the volumes in the

design is unique in this area and should be ableto stimulate interaction on a more subtile and

distinguished manner. Each volume houses a commercial space(gallery/restaurant/shop) and 17 volumes

comprise o a 3 levels apartment; living/kitchen,sleeping/bath/work, roo patio. The apartmentsare a vertical interpretation o the historical

lay-out o the courtyard house. Undergroundbeneath the volumes is a big parking withprivate (or the apartment owners) and public

    parking access.

Dazhalan is a hutong area in central Beijing. These kind o hutong areas are mainly demolished in thepurpose o preservation. Really, many are rebuild rom scratch as a replica o ancient times with the

loss o the past architectural/urban transormation, the loss o its inhabitants and with that the loss o

a very distinct social and cultural place (gentrication). Dazhalan is one o the areas under pressure o amodernizing city. With the new trac road through Dazhalan already a lot o hutong houses are torn down. However, the power o Dazhalan is that next to a dwelling neighbourhood, it is also an acknowledged veryactive busy commercial and cultural zone.

The construction o the new road gave me the opportunity to create a reactivation zone adjacent to theTiananmen Square. On the border commercial / cultural / dwelling between grand controlled public spaceand introvert hutong on the other side, the inner space o the project becomes the transition zone between

huge contrasts. The units can be tted all along this border area as a sort o organism o transition, partiallydue to its generic ree arrangeable oor plans.

The image o the acade is derived rom an analysiso window patterns that I have seen many times atmany places in Beijing. This specic iceraypattern

appears at rst chaotic, randomly placed lattices. However, there is a set o rules, most important:a junction is always a T-junction, connecting

only two lines. The pattern became literally theleitmotiv or the design, where it constructively, programmatically and aesthetically contributed

    to the architecture.Construction

    acade detailalong stairs

The constructive iceray consist o HE-A steel beams, supporting the oor

load in the center o the horizontal IPE oor beams within a 1/3 margin. These diagonal beams also take on the diagonal orces on the construction.Because the icerays rule is to avoid multiple beam joints, joints have to be

xed end moments. On the outer acade the construction is representedby UNP beams.

    Program

Programmatically the iceray determines the interior spaces. The diagonalslead to skewed walls and elements, creating exciting spaces. The skewed

walls determine the urniture, like the bathtub which emerges out o it.The stairs, ascending in a spiral along the acade, are represented in the

constructive elements on the acade. Along the stairs are semi-transparentacade parts, divided as a smaller iceray. These semi-transparent milk-white parts reer to the traditional rice paper (in traditional use the rice

paper was pasted to the iceray lattices).

Due to large scale redevelopment, the cityNieuwegein launched a competition or a new

bike stall in the centre, at the side entrance othe shopping mall Cityplaza. In my design the main principals were

surveyability and efectivity. Essential or thesuccess o this stall is a visible entrance close tothe entrance o the Cityplaza.

The entrance o the stall is marked with a redoor. The routing through the stall is designedto give the visitor a clear view on the available

stalling places. The ground oor program holds bikes and

motorbikes stalled behind the control room

or the employee, whos watching the stall andcarrying out some repairs. There is a wide and

slant bicycle-riendly staircase ascending tothe second oor where the rest o the bikescan be stored, a bicycle-unriendly stair is

leading rom the 2nd oor via the exit into thedirection o the shopping mall entrance. Back

rom the mall the visitor can take the sameroute backwards.

The judge honoured the clear design, which

is efective and orderly organized. The imagegives a proper expression o the internal logic.

A client in China asked us or a study o a big scaleurban intervention in Shanghai. The programconsisted o parking, retail, oces, hotel,

apartments and a supermarket. Ater extensivemass studies we chose to present the client 3

variations o very diferent potentials. Part o myshare was the proposal o the grid-model, basedon my experience rom my graduation project.

Pedestrian bridge with the entrance (let)

The design or this competition in Katowice,Poland is based upon a splitted volume. A publicpedestrian bridge slices through the volumes and

connects the city with a cultural zone. Beneaththe bridge the two volumes are connected. In the

largest volume is big concert hall, in the smallervolume the entrance and a small concert hall.

The interior is designed with very strict acoustic

demands. The exterior shape is reerring to theormer mines in the city but with its translucentacade it is also a subtle contrast.

For a new shopping center in Terwijde, Utrechtwe designed 2 buildings (F and H). Both havea partial commercial ground oor topped with

apartments around a collective courtyard. Thewarmcourtyard is a pleasant contrast with the

urban outside. The outer acade consist o 3acade types that playully interconnect. In thisproject I worked on the apartment plans, overall

    tilting concept

The competition or a dredging companyin Amsterdam was to design a oating

oce building including a new design orthe accompanying harbour. Main designconsiderations came rom the specic routing in

the program. The building unctions as a showertransition zone or the workers on the dredgeships. At the same time it houses an oce or the

other employees. These two separated unctionsare stacked as a dark and a bright program. In

the patio central to the oce space lies a watercontainer or sustainable use o heating, ushingand as a day light reector. The building is slightly

tilted, challenging the oating capacity. This

creates a visual tension between the buildingand its context. The punched corroded metal

plates reer to the industrial character o thecompany. The sustainability was a major ocus in

    this project.

Theme or this project was multiple generation

housing. The competition plot in Drachten isdivided in collective unctions, like kitchen

gardens, a recreation area, buttery gardenand a petting zoo. The next layer is a seeminglyrandom arrangement o buildings. The west side

is densied on village scale and orms a clearlydened border against the opposite park. Theeast side is the opposite in layout and opens up

the plot. The archetype o the dutch house wasthe basic design concept.

This timeless shape identies the idea o

accommodating multiple generations. Throughscaling the buildings a variety o dwelling typesexist: ground oor accommodation, apartments,

maisonettes, single houses. The diferentaccommodation programs together withdiferent positions in the collective yard create a

huge diversity o choice, which could appeal toa large diverse group o people, independent ogeneration.

The acade o the building unctions as amembrane, that separates the interior romthe outside and lets molecules pass through,

regulating the lie within the cell andprotecting it. The acade is a steel constructionwith a light non-isolated inner and outer

textile skin. You enter the building throughone side o the cubes double skin. Betweenthe other walls are the emergency exits. The

volumes in the cube are ree oating in thecube and each one is separately insulated. A

glass roo provides or natural lighting.Eventually there is a closed inner space, whichis intimate, but at the same time remains

the contact with the outside by a thin wind

and temperature permeable acade and thesunlight rom above.

This project is based on the idea to replacethe current railway to below ground level.

This will provide the opportunity or a new

above ground program. With a partial givenand a partial ree interpreted program odemands, this is applied to a new urban plan.

Living, working and recreation go togetherwith the new railway station. For a smoothtrac ow across the city there will be a new

road above the railway. The current road isnarrowed down and made only accessible

to light trac. This way the new part joinsthe inner cities car-ree zone, providingextra living quality. In this plan there is more

public space then in the current situation,

due to the new square next to the station.Freedom o public use is a basic concept

here. A small xed program should providea continuous active square, while a variable

program o temporary events shouldenorce the autonomous character o the

square. Central to the xed program is thecubic theatre building which should activate

the area as a evening/night-time attraction. The closed and iconic appearance is meantto raise curiosity o its visitors and passers-by.

At big events the building should be able to

open itsel to the square. Closed, it housesthree diferent ree oating volumes. The

lowest volume, supported by giant concretelegs houses an arena theatre, where the stage

is entirely surrounded by the audience. Ontop o this volume is a platorm with a baror rereshments and relaxation. In the top

which can be adjusted to the desired size.Next to this hanging box there is another boxor workshops and rehearsals.
