  • EXPORT LOGISTICS CENTER |EPZ ITANHAMITANHAM, BRAZIL_2012

CONCEPT DESIGNIn collaboration with JM CARVALHO ARAJO, ARQUITETURA E DESIGN S.A.

It is intended to develop a complex of excellence - a masterplan for anEPZ - export logistics center in Itanham (Brazil) to work, live, and enjoy. The exceptional conditions of the plot, near the beach, connected to anurban fabric and with easy accessibility to Santos, Sao Paulo and Curitibaallowed to develop a program for a complex EPZ - Export ProcessingZone with companies of excellence with top experts, where also newproducts will be developed. The intention of incorporating a mixed program, with housing, tourism, leisure, sports, industry and commerce is the opportunity to create a lessconventional industrial area, which is more appealing, similar to new toptechnology centres. The aim was to create an environment of great harmony, with great qualityof life in a place of unique features. Alongside to the needs of industrialand business pavilions, there is a residential program assuring housingaccommodation both for senior and management and, for employees, assuring basic housing. Accommodation is complemented with a hotelarea. There were three key points in the development of the project:1 - The concept of "bags" as in indigenous camp sites, with great respectfor the environment with areas which are simultaneously well defined butalso in great harmony with the context;2 - The concept of island / industrial neighborhood, creating dynamicbusiness relationships or, the business neighbourhood.3 - The concept of shopping street in industrial blocks, with severaladditional functions that value the product of the companies and bringsthe industry closer to the customer. This diversity results in a complex of greater harmony. Proximity of workto housing and leisure is possible in this complex.

CONCEPT DESIGNIn collaboration with JM Carvalho Arajo, Arquitetura e Design SA

The immediate ancestors of the first skyscrapers were Mannor Housesextruded to the limits of possibility at the time. The use of the elevator, originally presented as a fairground attraction in a circus show, drove arapid change in the paradigm of the possibility of building in height, whenthe sector still hadnt had the time to develop new concepts or a newdesign. As so, these new buildings were mega-mansions that still kept therefinement, detail and dedication that they laid in previous private homes. With the appearance of the elevator the social structure of the floors werereversed. The top floors that were previously reserved for servants andlaborers were now the most desirable. The competition of who is more atthe top starts in the thickened urban fabric; at the abutment of the buildingrests its bylaw - from the attic to the pinnacle. The top of the buildingrepresents its crown and its base is defined as a multifunctional / socialelement in direct relationship with the city. Both contribute to the status ofthe building. The first, as a symbolic element, the second defines thecultural, social and commercial dynamics that the property may offer. In-between the two, the building is built by an undefined web that may havemore or less floors.

  • DAU - DHIRUBHAI AMBAMANI UNIVERSITY CAMPUSBHOPAL, INDIA_2011

Competition: Dhirubhai Ambamani University CampusPromoter: Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani GroupIn collaboration with Vastu Shilpa Consultants

Dhirubhai Ambani University outlined its vision to set up a campus on a 100 acres siteat the outskirts of Bhopal, India. The university would offer graduate and doctoralprograms in Information and Communication Technology. The brief outlined the needfor a campus to nurture young minds in an environment that would create potential forintellectual and social exchange. At the same time it is imperative that the master planwould respect the context and celebrate the cultural identity of the historic city of Bhopaland be environmentally sensitive to the ecology. The site is set in a rural setting 15km from the Bhopal City Center. The hydrogeologystudy of the site reveals a depleted landscape and mostly patches of rocky sub baseabundant with naturally occurring basalt. Natural rain water channels flows across thesite from the hills at the North West corner gradually slopping to the east. The masterplan responds to the brief by adhering to a multilayered planning approach with theintention to bind the built environments in a landscape which would enhance thephysical network system of the campus.A natural system is weaved along the rainwaterchannels creating a preservation and landscape regeneration strategy which willeventually transform the existing landform. Water harvesting ponds are intertwined inthis fluid landscape around which campus amenities are infused. The student andfaculty housing and the core campus are placed strategically to generate a high level ofpedestrian interconnectivity between them leading to several academic plazas andcourts.

  • KAW HOUSEAHMEDABAD, INDIA_2010|11

Conceptual DesignIn collaboration with Vastu Shilpa Consultants

Kaw House, in Ahmedabad, India, is for a family of six - Mr&Mrs Kaw and their frequentlive-in two married children and guests. Constantly committed to the search for anarchitecture qualified for improving life and providing a sense of creativity andcommitment to its inhabitants, the project developed with Vastu-Shilpa Consultantsstems from a specific reply to its programmatic goal, site and environmental conditions.Situated on a suburban area of Ahmedabad, the site is a rectangular 2400m2 plot, divided into four: three equal fractions for the clients and their children, and the fourthplot facing the road, for offices. In a green residential area, its street is extracted out ofthe citys tangled traffic into a peaceful area only to be found by locals or the curious. How to encompass its green inside the house? The central courtyard and the position ofthe windows and roof lights help outspread the buildings spacial boundary, setting updiagonal views across the house that capture specific outlooks of the trees and sky. Thesearch of privacy and refuge does not demand isolation or enclosed space. Instead, thehouse is notable by a series of spaces that are full of light and air. At the center of thebuilding is a courtyard inspired by the traditional Indian domestic courtyards. Thesurrounding green cuts through the building creating this open-to-sky garden sited insidethe center of the house as an extention and part of the living room: a social hub for thegregarious family. Typically, this open-air courtyard and openings of the house not onlyassist ventilation but also provide visual and fair networks across all spaces of thehouse, providing the sense of a house within a large garden. With double skin concretewalls, self-supporting columns and floating concrete slabs, the structure is held inequilibrium without the sustenance of any internal walls. Inspired by historic pattern, theexterior angled walls evoke the dynamic drive of the buildings when one walks throughthe streets of a medieval Indian town with its facades. The structure creates differentrhythms that resonate with the variegated shadows on its surface. The interior can bereleased to make an uninterrupted space. As it is, however, freestanding storage wallsdefine the internal rooms, enhancing the house's spatial flexibility.

  • PENEDONO CASTLEPenedono, Viseu, Portugal_2010

Conceptual ProjectIn co-authority with ARQUITECTOS ANNIMOS

Penedono Castle is a study based on crystallography, in particular granitemicro crystals. The main objective is to develop a museum inside theruins of a rocal castle (rocal is a portuguese word for rocky), meaningthat it is entirely built over a rock formation, in this case granite fromPenedono (+40 59' 23.83", -7 23' 38.16"). The design idea starts withmicroscopic observations of a granite sample, in search of a patterninggeometry. From the observation, using an optical microscope (HighMagnification Measuring Microscope, model Titan TM-10) we gotinterested in tinatite crystal patterns, performing diamond shapes. Thesequence of images collected were interpreted as pure geometry, 2-dimensional graphics that could inform the investigation of anarchitectural/design entity.

[I]S(un)warm, introduces a virtual system conceived "naturally" in a stateself-organization.[II] S(un)warm is about the development of a system where all parties aretreated as structural monocoque components (four generatorcomponents: SU1, SU2, SU3, SU4), morphologically different, buttopologically identical. We developed a script in Microsoft Vbscript (a subset of the programminglanguage Visual Basic), or computer program (or algorithm) that canmimic the rules of self-organization present in "group" intelligence of manyorganisms, particularly the so-called social insects. This digital tool wasthen applied in the development of a three-dimensionalstructure/installation to the public space, based on the previouslydesigned components. The components of the system S(un)warm consistof rigid panels (double-sided aluminum and a polyethylene core) cut onCNC milling machine and folded according to the angles of each variant (SU1, SU2, SU3, su4). So that not only allows a standard configuration ofsemi-spherical dome, but also multiple complex geometry configurations. The assemblage system allows the mechanical production ofdifferentiated components and a very fast construction taking in accountthe overall complexity of the final populations ("swarms"). The finalstructure combines various components and is intended to beimplemented in the public space, Porto-Portugal, creating a space ofshelter (canopy). The manipulations of this general structure (using thescript that reproduces the swarm behavior) allowed structural resistanceand ensured the soundness of the whole.

The biological-genetic codeness that drives differentiation in AfricanAnophelines Larvae body is used to adapt and create a morphogeneticprotocol to the implementation of a modular house. In the Larvaldevelopment, the genome determines the pattern, and the puzzle ofdevelopmental biology is used as a metaphor to deploy a growth systemapplied to housing structures

This project is linked to the idea of recreating the process of biological growth usinga generative algorithm based on formal grammars. Can this logic generatearchitecture? Can this logic be seen as a second "body" grown from an existingstructure? Is it possible for this strategy to serve additional algorithmic functionssuch as the creation of an organizational logic, a closed/targeted space, or thedevelopment of a structural system? Homeobox is an adaptive/adaptable scenerythat accepts unpredictability as a modus operandi. Based on a script growth, theproject incorporates a set of constraints (conflict/relational attitude with the structureof the cube of Siza) as an alternative to pre-formatted design procedures.

Academic WorkBTU COTTBUS_ Brandenburg University of TechnologyIn co-authority with Giulia Zaccari

From the urban scale and its vectors to the environment and scale of the city ofBerlin, the project - Brazilian Cultural Center - aims to show the Brazilian art andculture. In the historical city center (Mitte), Rosenthaler Platz has a peculiar socialreality: a place that shelters the art scene of the city since the country's reunification in1989. Framed in this principle, the composition of the building is planned as a symbolof the diversity and dynamism of Brazilian art and culture, influenced by its historicalcontexts and by its tangible and socio-economic divergences.Along the extension of the place, architecture incorporates morphologic requirementsat a larger scale. Standing at a great pedestrian and vehicle passage, the sight ischaracterized as a crossing point. On a street corner of this crossroad, the projectcloses the block where it is incorporated. The entrance floor, in direct communicationwith pedestrians, provides a settling area, a space that welcomes the fluidity anddynamism of the streets that pass across: an improved support between the buildingand the city. The building, defined as a whole, is built in a game of mass and voids. As a silent film of the Brazilian culture, boxes are projected into space and the opensky. It creates a sense of dynamic volumes, dysphonia. Buffer-boxes stand freely inan open plan condensing private spaces that move in a neutral background: visualintersections in shared scenarios of the areas between the volumes. It engenders thedetachment of private and public, silence and noise, isolation and exposure. Visualinterferences, transparencies and light recreations: dynamism. Elevations that"move, that change constantly. Two rhythms and two aesthetics are generated: onthe one hand a drawing that reveals the inner uses, the truth of the structural boxes;on the other hand, the expression of fragility of a skin of wood. A volume formulatedby a 'dynamic ambience' that draws the building, the street corner, as a whole

Academic WorkBTU COTTBUS_ Brandenburg University of TechnologyIn co-authority with Edn Ochoa Iniesta and Jan Kolodzie

The urban surroundings of Karl-Marx-Allee, the first monumental boulevard includedin the program of reconstruction of East Germany after the 2nd World War, was builtas an allegory to the glory and power of the socialist movement. The explosivegrowth of the city requested the development of large-scale housing in this area, which dealt with the needs of lower social classes. The avenue provides animportant link between Friedrishchain and Alexanderplatz, and is a gateway to thehistoric center of Berlin. Nevertheless, although it is located in central Berlin, thearea is isolated from the structure of the city. It is bordered to the north by Volkspark,to the south by the railway and the river Spree, and to the West by Alexanderplatz:barriers to an adaptable communication between the place and the city. Theintervention intends to strengthen the relations between the community, itsinhabitants and the city, redesigning communication systems in accordance with itsold structure. It creats public spaces that can serve as attractive clusters in thecenters of blocks, introduces human scale by densifying existing blocks, organizinguses and functions that are es-sencial services to its residents and to the whole city.Karl-Marx Allee, avenues, paths and green spaces are re-designed enhancing therelationship of place, its surroundings - Volkspark, Kreuzberg, Friedrischain andAlexanderplatz- and the rest of city.

Academic WorkFAUP_Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto

The scales and shapes of the urban fabric of Porto form an almostchaotic tangle where the notion of fragment stands out as a rule in theurban setting. The public building is defined as an autonomous fragmentin the rule of its urban fabric.Balanced between two concepts order and exception it stands as areference in the entrance of city (Avenida Sidnio Pais - avenue), andas an element that regulates the interior of the block and closes one ofits sides. As a triangle, the volume is a solid mass surrounded by aneutral green space. Closed to the external environment, it only opensto a patio a vacuum core that circumscribes a domain from theoutside, mediates private from public, silence fromnoise. Itscontinuous skin freestanding wall and the roof draws an evensurface closed to the external world, highlighting the role of its core. Afluid U route, starting from the public space, is drawn contiguous to theperimeter of the building. The entrance lobby generates pathways andconsolidates two different areas in a simple and continuous allocation ofthe program: to the South stands the swimming pool and its services, and to the North, the gymnasium. Circuits organize technical ventilationsystems, concentrate sudden expansions and the rhythm of glassframes. Furniture and artificial light make clear the human scale

  • BOAVISTA COLLECTIVE HOUSINGBOAVISTA, PORTO, PORTUGAL_2005|06

Academic WorkFAUP _Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto

Considering the urban area of Oporto and the comprehension of the specific place, architecture can be a factor of urban conception and transformation. In contrast tothe fluidity of Avenida da Boavista (Avenue), the area provides a place of stability.Architecture as a definer of scales, as a generator of balance between public andprivate environment frameworks. The "L" shaped volume of the building conveys therelationship between the city and the sight: it follows the front of the Avenue, andthen closes a cross-development square. The relationship between the public usageof the Avenue and the square is delineated by trade services in the access floor, beneath a cut path in the volume. The modulation of two and three room apartments is drawn as an adaptablecomposition, settling areas of distribution, services, rooms and living areas. Theentrance and distribution area of each apartment is drawn as a generator of itsstructure. With games of light and transparency, this central element can bebenefited as an extension to the living area. The character of flexibility is in thepossibility of transformation of one of the rooms in an area extending the living roomas well as in the dynamic shutters of the elevations. The aim is a fluid andcontinuous organization of spaces: place and housing as a reference of identity forthe resident in the city.
