About

In October 2008 The Impossible Project saved the last Polaroid production plant for integral instant film in Enschede (NL) and started to invent and produce totally new instant film materials for traditional Polaroid cameras. In 2010 Impossible saved analog instant photography from extinction by releasing various, brand new and unique instant films. Therewith Impossible prevents more than

300.000.000 perfectly functioning Polaroid cameras from becoming obsolete, changes the world of photography and keeps variety, tangibility and analogue creativity and possibilites alive. Impossible Timeline

2008FEBRUARYPolaroid announces that it will withdraw from analog instant film product

JUNEForian Kaps meets André Bosman at the closing event of the Polaroid factory in Enschede, The Netherlands. They decide not to accept the extinction of analog instant photography but to start The Impossible Project.

OCTOBERThe Impossible Project takes off, having bought the production machinery from Polaroid and leased Building North of the former Polaroid plant.

2009OCTOBERTo mark Impossible's first birthday the giant production machines were fired up again, being fed with a selection of vintage and re-developed materials.

DECEMBERImpossible presenst the last original, carefully saved Polaroid film - repackaged in a limited Special Edition designed by Paul Giam-barba, who created the iconic look of Polaroid from 1958 to 1977

2010MARCHImpossible presents its first, new instant film: PX 100 and PX 600 Silver Shade.

JULYThe First Flush Edition of the PX 70 Color Shade film is launched - the beginning of a colorful analog future.

DECEMBEROpening of a Project Space in Tokyo ( Japan) – Impossible’s new Asian home base.

Impossible ProductionDue to the fact that the original Polaroid color dyes are not available any more and that there is no chance to reproduce them, the Impossible Project had to start from the very scratch. The Impossible team had one year to completely reinvent a new photographic instant system. Impossible? Almost. But after thousands of experiments and after a million of small steps and a lot of blood, sweat and tears (not to forget the support of many excellent partners) we managed to develop a new Impossible film system.

In April 2010 Impossible released the first line of a new, monochrome film. Based on Impossible's new Silver Shade system, this unique new monochrome system contains 29 new layers as well as 13 new chemicals and forms the basis of all our future products. By now, the following Silver Shade film materials are available: PX 100 Silver Shade for Polaroid SX 60 cameras, PX 600 Silver Shade for Polaroid 600 cameras and PZ 600 Silver Shade for the wide format in Polaroid Image/Spectra 1200 cameras.

In July 2010 Impossible released the First Flush Edition of a first, brand new color film - quite a miracle considering that not even the most optimistic experts believed in the re-invention of the highly complex instant color system. PX 70 Color Shade FF is the first meteoric prod-uct of Impossible's new and rapidly expanding Color Shade universe, compatible with Polaroid SX 70 as well as 600 camera models.

Silver Shade films are astonishing, brand new, monochrome film materials for traditional Polaroid cameras. They deliver breathtaking images with an iridescent tone range from black & white to sepia, depending on light conditions and temperature. Silver Shade films also allow various artistic manipulation techniques.

With their sensitivity and flexibility, the unconventional Silver Shade films don't face you with a fait accompli, but with an invitation and the possibility to have a fling with various color shades, results and flavors, all according to your personal taste. Silver Shade films are as individual and exciting as you are. Get to know them well and make them therewith your best friend in order to produce the most breathtaking analog images ever made

When Impossible started development of a new color instant film material in the former Polaroid factory in Enschede (NL), even the most optimistic integral film experts doubted that the re-invention of the highly complex instant color system was possible. But supported by the outstanding team from Inoviscoat the Impossible wizards made the Impossible possible and invented a complete new color system in just one year. The currently available Impossible color films are an experimental and artistic film material, paving the way towards a unique, colorful future for analog instant photography.

About

Page 12: portfolio part 3

The PX 70 Color Shade PUSH! is a greatly improved film that takes the next step from the First Flush Edition into the ongoing development of a colorful future. Its newly developed color system (a highly complex ensemble of chemistry) allows achieving much more defined, fine colors and a unique overall color performance.

Please carefully read these instructions to make the most colorful instant pictures:

To reward you with the coolest palette of colors since the beginning of Impossible, the PX 70 Color Shade PUSH! asks you for one simple, yet essential favor: LIGHT! Use it mercilessly, twist the lighten darken wheel/slider of your camera to the lightest area and overexpose your images, flooding your objects in excessive light.

Light will help you to squeeze as many color shades out of this film as possible. Our princess of color, friend and photographer Zora Strangefields, discloses the secret of her magnificent PX 70 PUSH! images: "I illuminate my colorful subjects so brightly that they throw up their arms and scream 'Aaah - I'm going blind!'".

One fact that comes in quite convenient given the approaching cold and dark winter days is that PX 70 Color Shade PUSH! is ideal for indoor-usage. Plenty of artificial light will reward you with beautiful color images.

Of course you can also take the PX 70 Color Shade PUSH! outside into bright sunlight and enjoy its vivid play of colors.

PX 70 Color Shade PUSH! film is the perfect test object for your creativity and invites you to discover all kinds of artistic and creative manipulation techniques.

The classic manipulation technique that we all know and love from original SX70 film material will also work with images taken on PX 70 PUSH! film. Apply rounded tools to move the emulsion under the foil as well as using heat and cold to create different tonal ranges. Utilize different tools in order to change the outcome of your strokes and patterns (pencils, wooden sticks, etc) which don't harm the foils surface. Start manipulating the film gently and repeat it over the same area in order to achieve the classic SX manipulation result of twisted, artistic, watercolor-like effects.

Images taken on PX 70 PUSH! film are very easy to peel apart. Not only will the peeling apart provide you with unique artistic results, but it will also prevent any further chemical reactions and thus alterations within the image

Even though optimized for usage in SX 70 cameras only, PX 70 PUSH! film invites you to be used and played around with in different cameras by applying different lenses, filters and light situations. This image was taken by Rommel on PX 70 PUSH! film used in a Pinhole Camera (f132) with .6 ND filter and Polaroid CB70 back at 2.5 minutes exposure.

With the new and latest chemistry of the PX 70 PUSH! film Impossible arouses new and broad possibilities for a colorful analog instant photography.

The PX 70 PUSH! is though still a very experimental film with one very peculiar characteristic: an ongoing chemical reaction makes images taken on the PX 70 PUSH! shift to blue with time.

-PEELINGthe image apart is the only proven measure to completely stop the chemical reaction, avoiding any fading or alteration.

-TEMPERATUREalso shows effects on the colour performance of this material. fridge storage delays the shift to blue effect. After taking the picture out of cooled storage the fading process will continue. Our latest tests also showed great results when developing and storing the pictures on a warm object like a radiator.

-LOTS OF LIGHTwill not only help create the most colorful images, but bright images will show less of the images's tendency to turn blue over time. The more exposure, the less fading into blue will occur.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT contains a high percentage of red light. Exposing the PX 70 PUSH! film to artificial light hinders the blue diffusion and helps to achieve neutral results in the long term
