  • Nicholtown is an area of Greenville, South Carolina that has a few places for the community to gather and interact with each other. Other than a basketball court in a community center and privately owned porches, there arent many places in Nicholtown that are shaded. This pocket park and open field will create a gathering space, using shade, that will be comfortable to use over the many seasons in South Carolina. It has a loose program, so that the public and users can decide what type of programing that will fit their needs.

This was a group project with Alex Latham

    PHASE III

For this phase, the existing park will be adapted for increased use and interaction between community members on either side of the bridge. With the addition of perforated, adjustable metal structures, the space will allow for shaded interaction at all times of day.

For phase II, the bike network will be installed in various Nicholtown locations and along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Working with Momentum Bikes, this will allow ease of access to multiple public locations in the community. This phase will also include the initial phases of design for the bike storage and repair shop.

The final intervention takes place in phase III. This phase will involve the installation of a multipurpose court for basketball, tennis, and four-square. The existing site slope will be used as the viewing platform/grandstand for the court. Meetings, games, concerts, and events can all take place on this platform. The bike shop will be expanded with a male and female restroom in addition to the Kinect bike system headquarters.

  • Pastor Dave is a resident of the Nicholtown community that needed a home that was affordable and one that would fit his needs in the Nicholtown neighborhood. He is a leader in the community and with that leadership, he hosts many church events and gatherings.

Dave needed a house that would fit his needs but would also be affordable. Thirteen Ackley Street is a very unique area because it is both a commercial and residential lot. Because of that, house has both those typologies. The use of large, open, glass windows imitate the store fronts that surround that area. It creates an open feel and a welcoming entrance. The kitchen and living-room are on the bottom floor where it is very open and public so that large groups can gather and interact with each other. The cedar siding was chosen to be used for Daves private space because that is a widely used material in the Nicholtown community. The private space for Dave is on a different level and lofted to look over the living room and kitchen area so that Dave can look over the public spaces, but remain in his private quarters.
