Look in almost any newspaper and more than likely you will find
an article about local government that is considering regulating the
use of plastic bags. Articles usually leave out the side by side
comparison. A truthful look at what is required to produce a plastic
bag versus a similar paper bag shows that paper bags are two
to ten times more wasteful to produce in terms of greenhouse gas
emissions and use of energy. The same holds true for the light
bulb packaging. The use of clear compostable corn starch plastics
is an environmentally-friendly alternative to paper packaging.

Chocolate is one of those gifts suited for almost any occasion.
There are so many hand-made boutique chocolatiers on the market.
Among so many choices it is the presentation that makes one
chocolate be outstanding from the rest. Packaging is one important
factor that cannot be ignored. It is not enough to simply inform
the customer through the package of the product, you need to
impress him by being creative.

The Republic of Tea is a nationally-recognized category leader
in specialty tea sales. It was one of the first companies to retail
varieties such as red tea, white tea, and tea seed oil to American
consumers. The company strives to bring the most exquisite
teas of the world to the people, provide healthy products and
maintain high social responsibility. The goal of the company
rebranding was to create a unique and contemporary identity
that would allow its products to stand out on the shelves.

Calbasoni Delicatessen is a local San Francisco deli shop founded
in 1933 by Mauricio Calbasoni. Owing to customers’ loyalty and love
of good food, the shop expanded into several locations throughout
the city. With the help of family and friends Mauricio also opened a
small restaurant. Calbasoni treats his wonderful customers as friends
and not numbers. The new identity emphasizes the traditional high
quality and friendliness of the local Italian deli.

To conduct a market research for pro-recycling packaging
I went to the grocery stores to look at how customers deal with
the packaging of products consumed on-site. I saw a boy
with an empty juice box run up to the three colored garbage
cans. He stood there for a minute, hesitating. Then he just
turned around and ran away. He just could not make a decision.
Quite often I am also not sure of how to dispose of certain
products or packaging. But what I do know is that most of the
packaging carries bar-codes or RFID identifiers. So why not
make a device that would identify a product or packaging and
show how to dispose of it?

Being a fan of Italian opera I wanted to create a wine set
dedicated to my favorite opera comedy “The Barber of Seville,” also
known as “The Futile Precaution.” The main idea was to bring
the feelings of playfulness and classicism together. I decided to use
five distinctly different types of wine in one set to emphasize
the diversity of the five main characters of the play.

Tormore distillery was built in 1957 near the river Spey in Scotland.
Its building is listed and considered to be the one of the most elegant
distilleries in the United Kingdom. The water used in the production
of whiskey is taken from the river Spey which is well known its purity.
The freshwater pearl mussels that can only survive in the purest
water have become a symbol of Spey. In 2005 the Tormore distillery
came under the control of Chivas Brothers who produce the famous
Chivas Regal line of blended Scotch whiskey.

District is an original shopping location where urban dwellers can
find one-of-a-kind design household items and apparel that are not
made to be thrown away, but rather made with quality materials
designed to last. Unlike upscale department stores which are dying
out and cater toward a more upscale clientele through design and
products, and sprawling malls which gear their design and products
to the suburban lifestyle, District will give the Millennial generation
of city dwellers a brand new and much needed experience which will
encompass and provide for all aspects of life.

Barcelino is an upscale international clothing company based
in Corte Madera, CA. The first store was opened on Union Street
in San Francisco in 1972. Now Barcelino operates 9 stores
on the West Coast. The company keeps a team of in-house clothing
designers and manufactures clothing by contractor network
in Italy, France and Germany. The aging brand called for a new
graphic expression for Barcelino. The new logotype brings
a hand-tailored feeling to the brand, attracts new clientele that
considers style to be very personal, very permanent and not
changing with the ups and downs of fashion.

Toyota presents ToyoRail, a campaign aimed at improving traffic
conditions in the Bay Area. ToyoRail is an infrastructure of high-speed
monorails, designed to carry passenger cars between the end
stations. The stations are located near the main junctions of the busiest
routes and operate on the principle of toll gates. For a small charge
comparable to the fee of a conventional toll gate, the motorist is able
to safely breeze at the speed of 125 miles per hour above the busy
motorways, city lights and avenues fil led with pedestrians and cyclists.
City residents can enjoy empty streets free of transit traffic.

Certain aspects of photography lend themselves well
to a design process. Composing a photograph within the four
corners of a camera viewfinder is very much like laying
out a poster or creating an il lustration. Just as a designer uses
the principles of balance, flow and focal point to produce
an effective design so does a photographer in order to get
a visually striking photo. Photography makes you find
the perfect balance between the purpose and function of
an image. It gives you your own point of view.

Typography is one of the most useful and important tools
in the graphic design toolbox. It is even more interesting when
it is applied to the very source of words, the books. This
chapter contains some of the creative typography designs
and book arts projects.
