CONCEPT: INDIGENOUS TRIBUTE

ERNEST PLACE, CROWS NESTCAFE BALAJA

HOSPITALITY PROJECT

Thousands of years ago, the Eora tribe used to live on the northern side of Sydney Harbour where the cafe is located today. The design is supposed to pay tribute to the people once lived on this land.

This is what a pedestrian sees walking by the cafe.

The curved counter is located opposite the entry attracting by-passers.

Stars guided

While indigenous people used the stars to navigate their way, today’s patrons are guided into the cafe by a solar powered glow path. It is made from fluorescent paint coated stones embedded in the flooring. ENTRY

The colour scheme

The tonal inversion with three pastels and orange in a full hue gives the traditional indigenous colours a modern twist.

Cosy lounge cave

The furniture

Inspired by indigenous people making caves out of tree branches or bark, the cafe possesses a modern cave. The timber wall and ceiling structure around cosy lounge seating is made out of plywood.

Sharing storiesIndigenous people gathered around the camp fire sharing dreamtime stories with their family and tribe members.

Modern camp fireThe cafe has its own interpretation of an open fire at its doorstep. Patrons can enjoy drinks after work or catching up with friends around a safe ethanol fire place, lolling on the hammock or sitting on one of the rock stools.

RETAIL PROJECT

CONCEPT: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The brief Design and plan a creative retail space including display systems, visual merchandising and branding.

Selling homewares, fashion and accessories that are handmade in India, Cloth & Co’s

aim is helping alleviate poverty, fostering women’s empowerment, cultural

sustainability and social change.

What a difference a

purchase can makeGetting a hand loomed travel wrap from Cloth & Co in Sydney can act like a stone thrown into the water causing a ripple effect. The purchase provides a fair income for an Indian woman to support herself and her family.

This ripple effect drives the design of the retail store.

It might enable her to get better education for her children who in turn are able to lead a better life when they are grown up.

The design solution to include educational elements and to be communicated by building

a 3D model.

The company

The Floorplan

Ground floor

First floor

Ceiling ripplesJust like water ripples, the floorplan has a concentric layout that is mirrored in the wall, ceiling and floor structure. Using renewable and natural materials throughout the shop, both wall and ceiling circles have a white washed plywood finish while the floor is made out of Australian Blackbutt timber.

Page 10: Portfolio of concept work in residential and commercial design

Martina Hayes

Shop frontThe above image of the 3D model shows the shop front with three layers of ripples: clear glass panels, liquid crystal glass panels and a perforated metal screen behind.

Liquid crystal glass panels distort the view and

therefore attract attention from people walking by the shop.

Posters put up in the retail outlet are telling the story of the people who crafted the merchandise.

Timber display boxes are

suspended from the ceiling using a simple natural

rope.

A Gong makes

an audible difference

The Video well tells stories

Centre piece of the shop is a

huge Indian bronze gong. Suspended from

the ceiling the gong is placed

directly on top of the video well.

A hole cut into the slab and secured by a glass balustrade

allows shoppers to peak through to the basement

onto a video screen.

Surrounded by bench seating, shoppers can enjoy a break while being educated about

how the garments and homewares in the shop

are crafted.

Containing the branding and being cladded with dry stone, the point of sale is found in the rear of the shop. Behind its back wall is the change room located.

Their wish list included open plan living with plenty of space for indoor and outdoor entertaining.

The family’s requirements3 bedrooms, extra study, seperate lounge, ensuite with double shower in the master bedroom, butler’s pantry and the external laundry to be integrated into the floor space while keeping the original footprint. House facade prior to renovation

Entertainer’s delight

The room divider between dining room and the family/TV area allows open plan living while providing additional storage space for the family.

Smart kitchen

The butler’s panty with extra sink and dish washer is located behind the timber and polyurethane finished galley kitchen. It flows seemlessly to the outdoors into to barbeque area.

The dining room seats 8 people with large bifold doors connecting the indoors to the outdoor entertaining area.

CONCEPT: DROOG - JUST ADD WATER

OFFICE SPACE FOR DROOG

Page 23: Portfolio of concept work in residential and commercial design

Martina Hayes

Droog is a conceptual Dutch design company situated in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Droog works with independent designers to design and realise products such as furniture and lightings, but they also design exhibitions and events.

The company The briefDevelop and design

Droog’s new office in Sydney in a team of

3 designers. The requirement is to

accomodate 53 staff members

in the space

KITCHENGREENHOUSE

The conceptAs Droog means ‘dry’ in English, the concept ‘Droog - just add water’ is about the interplay between dry and wet.

Dry stands for reason and intelligence, whereas wet represents imagination and creativity. In nature, the best outcome is reached when dry and wet are in perfect harmony. This is also true for the design process; the perfect balance between reason and creatitivy achieves the most amazing design results.

Desk Lift Pure by Bene is height adjustable allowing to work seated or while standing.

Branding written

in waterComing out of the lift, the first thing a visitor will see is a water fountain that displays the company’s name with drops of water just like in the image on the left.

The pendant light ‘85 lamps’ by Droog illuminates the entry space suspended from the top of the reception desk.

‘Rag’ waiting chair by Droog for the reception area.

Coming as flexible concrete on a roll, concrete canvas just needs water to be wrapped around the reception desk. Once dry, this

finish forms a thin and water proof concrete layer.

Greenhouse for recreation and events

Located in the heart of the office space is a greenhouse that represents the ‘wet’ area where staff can have have their lunch or just a break to fuel their creativity.

Body movements get the creative juices flowing. The swing by Droog is an essential part of the greenhouse recreation area.
