Artistic Intervention in the public space of a shopping-mall.collaboration with Javier Mariscal and Lara Perez-Porro : Estudio Mariscal

Artistic integration in the public space of a shopping mall that have a strong influence through-out the city-center of Barcelona. The aim of the project was to offer the public space a new identity linked with the new design. The project deals with a visual identity invented by Javi-er Mariscal and architectural intervention with a new pave-ment’s drawing, huge sculptures as the totem we can see in the picture or the sculpture for the place (on top).

Each key point of the public space is symbolized by a sculp-ture and each sculpture has its proper signification : place to rest, visual totem ...

We worked at the same time on drawing the new gorund’s pave-ment and designing the piece which had to be assembled one to another in a continuity.

One of the Key point of the whole project is the meeting place. A huge sculpture make the visual effect and offer shadows for people who want to rest.

Topography as a formal matrix.

The aim of our project is to cre-ate a building integrated in the landscape and generated by the nature. The contour lines model the ter-ritory, they draw natural paths that, as an important landmark, led us in the creative trial.

Design Competition of Serlachius Museum Gösta

Origami shape.

the building like a paper origa-mi lays on the hill, as a tribute to one of the most important products related to the histo-ry of the Serlachius company and the Fine Arts, the paper. Moreover the origami trian-gles are able to fit effectively to the landscape, they create an organic shape camouflaging with the environment, becoming a part of the landscape.

Natural and circular paths.

The idea of a path is the con-cept of the project. A path that follows the lines of landscape and drives the visitor into the exhibition and into the nature.

The external path.

Along the water front the ex-ternal path develops in wooden platforms that follow the design of the building. This path seems to unwind in a series of sheets of paper that bend in seats. The path is integrated with several points of sessions for relaxation and contemplation of the land-scape, these provide different enjoyable viewpoints from differ-ent angles. This route starts with the restaurant’s terrace and it ends near the parking lot as to drive the visitor at the end of his visit.

The coherence between the for-mer riads and the new build-ings is very important. Indeed, the craftsmen’s local will be the guiding idea of the project. Creating a opened space in the Medina is a challenge but it al-low the space to turn into a square which is going to be an attractive space for tourism and also for the inhabitants. The principal intention was to preserve the environment of the Medina using the existing side-walk of the former place while restoring the surrounding’s ri-ads.

The Abbey is a mystical object surrounded by her protective and wild enclosure that over-hang the sea The wall of en-closure wraps a world almost opposite to this untamed envi-ronment.

The Abbey in ruin is a casing, a consecrated emptiness consist-ed of hulls that pack one with others creating an alternation of abundances and emptinesses.

I chose not to set the project in the whole Abbey but only in a portion in order to preserve the course of the current museum. I also wanted to create a pub-lic place that linked the spaces more private of the Ircam placed in the garden of the Abbey withe the rest of the project.

un «paysage architectural» tourné vers la mer

The intervention in the garden had to be done in the discretion. I want-ed to create a subtle «footprint» that will create a new architectural landscape. The fact of burying the studies of record is an assets from the acoustic’s needs. On the contrary, for the housings, it was necessary to open a sight on the bay and leave the light enter the places of living. this troglodyte complex is inserted in the topography and tends to re-veal the sight on the sea.

Pictures :

- The treatment of the soil of the esplanade, the work on line put of relief for the alternation of materials (concrete, wood and vegetation).- The footbridge offers a gate for all the activities and spac-es of the park (opened scene, spread expansion and areas of games).- The general environment of a space isolated from the city, an environment that offers calm and serenity into the city.

Page 13: Portfolio Marie Bettler

The treatment of the soil is a work on the line. The alternation of the materi-als (concrete, wood, vegetation) help to emphasize this game if lines that guide the pedestrian to the shops and facilities of the park.

The footbridge brings to the spaces (scenic space, space of rest, and space of games). It follows the diagonal of the plot. It is the principal axis of the park.

The walk in the park is free.

The entire space is free and you can feel protected by the dis-bursement with the road.

In this project of rehabilitation, the aim was to reveal the sub-tleties of the building preserv-ing its identity. Every space must reach to the local discovery. The court and its impressive volume has to “ perspire every time “ in the most private spaces offering a different reading of the space. For the expansion of the gang-planks, I proposed to create a continuity in spite of the diver-sity of the spaces. This link will be able to be physical or visual. The look of the visitor will be induced by the new adjustment.

The rooms, the restaurant and the bar are three key spaces of the project.

Page 15: Portfolio Marie Bettler

The rooms are situated in the sec-ond and third floor. I decided to create an intermediate space (tam-pon) delimited behind the existing front that was giving on the court. In the continuity of the gangplank and in its first role of service of communication for the rooms, this zone offers different points of view on the building. The bounces created by the disposition of the rooms are propitious to a meeting with the building.

The nature invades the ru-ins. The theatre is surrounded by vegetation in the shape of groups of trees. In this project, I wanted to keep and extend the image of this in-vading vegetation

I wanted to reconstruct a verti-cal pace on the ruins. The walls in laminated wood al-low to see the exterior in a fragmented way. The aim was to create small «pictures» of the nature as a masterpiece. The route of the museum is made to invit the visitor to dis-cover the ruins of the theatre in successive stages.

Ruins are real objects of fas-cination in architecture. They show simultaneously the fragil-ity and resistance threw the time. The ruins are fragments of architecture.

The ruins: -between decomposition and al-teration-between reconstruction and demolition-between reality and imagination

With the utilization of the walls formed by thin girders in wood chosen outwardly by a metal thread, I wanted to reflect the environment of decomposition / alteration …

Finally, the course divides in 3 phases, which allows to divide the ceiling in three parts that are superposed without never affecting one another.

The idea was to base the pro-ject on the sensualism of the curve of the garden as well as its exoticism. The video represents a dream that Burle Marx would have done in order to design this garden. It is a progression where bodies suggest little by little the lines of the garden. The dance (chore-ography of Découflé) represents the sensualism of the curve, the embrace of the forms, the face draws this very clear curve, and the character at the end an-nounces the arrival of the color.
