Why is it so hip to be square?

This portfolio magazine, is shaped like a square. Because the geometrical shape makes me smile. Also, the lyrics you can find on the previous pages, is about squares. The lyrics de-scribe my life: I used to not care about school, nor the things I was studying about. But since I got to this school – the Media and Design Academy in Genck – my life got flipped, turned upside down. School and the things I learn about, are my number one priority. I love life and the things i’m doing. The magazine meas-ures 22 cm by 22 cm, because I will be turning 22 this year. Let’s hope I can add 22 more and 22 more years to that, and still love graphic design when i’m 66.

P.S. Yes I used Comic Sans. Are you afraid now?

THE BIRDS, a movie by Alfred Hitch-cock, now with a “new” alternative end-ing! The scene Alfred Hitchcock wanted The Birds to end with: The Golden Gate Bridge, filled with birds.

step 1: cut out the entire shape of the letters. Then fold where dashed lines are applied! And no, it does not matter if they look crooked. It adds character!

step 2: cut out the bridge. Full line = cut, dashed line = fold

step 3: cut out the birds. use your folding imagination! It doesn’t matter if they

look different, it’s even better! And please do copy them as many times as you like. It doesn’t look like an attack with just 6 birds. + invent new birds!

step 4: Take your barbie/cat/child/… and let them play a leading role.

step 5: Arrange them in front of the poster with the logo.

step 6: use all the left-over paper to create the water, and cut a circle out of paper to represent the moon.

My name is Miet Claes. I am a graphic designer. I’m trying to discover everything about it, so I behave as an omnivore. Everything around us is inspiration, which we should eat to become stronger and bigger. We should be hungry all the time. One of my favorite things in life is experimenting. This often leads to an interesting new point of view. These new viewpoints are frequently hidden in my work. As you can see, it is hard for me to be tied down to one field of expertise. My wish is to experience new things. I try to get to know about them and use them to improve my work. Illustration is something I care deeply about, but the field of Typography is luring me. Web Design is another area I am trying to conquer. After that, the rest of the world is my prey.

Thank you for your attention.

out of spaceWatr emerged out of a research project called “Out of Space”. The goal of the project was to examine a particular space and to change what the space is used for, together with a cross-disciplinary team of students. The stairwell at the parkinglot became our space of choice. We tried to change the behaviour of people towards the space itself. We gave the space the chance to interact more with its users. The “Twitter Stream” and the “Thinking Well” made that possible. The Twitter Stream projected a stream of Tweets on the stairwell. They were Tweeted by the students, with #MAD_FAC in the message. The Tweets gathered downstream in a lost space connected to the stairwell, the Thinking Well. There you could read all the messages posted in the last few hours, in a simple projection. My task was to think about the concept, to gather and visualise information.

The concept could also be used in other spaces!

shoesI am a girl. And yes, I like shoes. But I don’t just like any pair of shoes. And if I don’t like them, I’ll make them likeable.

And painting on stuff that’s not meant for painting is better than painting on a piece of paper or a canvas.

clash of the

talentsBob Janssens, Leen Raes, Natascha Panteleymonova, Joyce Van Geffen and Julie Vanderbeck and myself, developed a campaign to get people drinking beer again in belgium. Other drinks are far more popular at the moment. How come? Well, we forgot about the moments we had with beer!

We decided to remind people: with beer coasters, posters in the street, a beer squad, direct mail, apps and much more fun stuff!

Here’s a little Art Work.
