01 VERTICAL STREETPoject Type: Architecture Design 2010 Function: New Urban Complex

Location: Shenzhen, China Tutor: Mr.Liu Erming Solo WorkSince the emergence of the elevator, the fabric of the streets in the city begans to extend upwards. However, all the functions are placed in homogeneous space linked by the elevators,be-ing covered with glass-curtain walls, thus the internal diversity is not reflected from the exterior.

On the other hand, with the capacity of the buildings rising up, the vertical traffic pressure also ascends.Commonly used forms and function layouts of the skyscrapers that we know have already can't satisfy people's needs.

The connection between space and space is single in a block and the only link is the elevator while the connection of each space is cut off by the floorslab.

On the contrary,we can see various organic connection in the streets.

We can see as the capactiy rises, the support-ing facilities demand will also increase respondingly, how to allocate these resources logically becomes a problem.

All kinds of structures with different functions are linked by the elevator in the URBAN COMPLEX and their diversities are covered by the glass skin or concrete skin so as to make the city more unified.

However, people are much more likely to live in diversified environment, we hope that there can be some suitable street environment in a mega strurc-ture.

ISSUE III

ISSUE I

ISSUE II

Page 4: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

Why not set the streets with different facilities up to the middle of the buildings,al-lowing the people on both ends of the building to approach through equal distances? At the same time the internal richness of the buildings can extend to the streets, while the diversity of the streets also can permeate into the buildings.

APPROACH

PATTERN STUDY

Page 5: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

In order to response to the 3 issues,i have set up a series of diagrams to analyze and solve the problems. There are three basic principles while i am dealing with it:

1.the approach to reveal the internal diversity of the urban complex.

2.the approach to create transitional and public space to organize the streets of suitable scale.

3.the approach to reallocate the functions of different facilities of the urban complex.

02 MOURNING IN THE LIGHTPoject Type: Architecture Design 2010 The International VELUX Award 2012

Competition Theme: Light of Tomorrow Function: Cemetery Location:China Teamwork(1/3)

I dream of designing a building that needs not have too much architectural language, but itself can be very practical, making a lot of people benefit from it.People can think of the meaning of life and even understand the timelessness of all life in such a quiet place.Only at this moment the building can communicate with the people. In this design, I tried to use the light as the main element to construct the building and it looks simple but have solved the problem of increasing cemetery construction lands.

A DREAM

Page 8: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

BACKGROUNDS

According to our research, the old designs of cemetery often neglect people’s emotional needs. This is because people now tend to connect with their deceased relatives or friends mentally or in an abstract way (i.e. the wood-land cemetery, where trees are used to repre-sent the dead) rather than materially. However, such “cemeteries groups” provide an environ-ment that an individual can hardly say hello to his/her loved ones under the ground.

Therefore we attempted to unlock that problem. Light, often used as a symbol of the spirit of human beings, is the key.

03 DIY COLLEGEPoject Type: Architecture Design Studio at URBANUS 2012

Theme: Knowledge as Infrastructure Location:Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen Totor: Mr. Liu Xiaodu Mr.Gong Weimin

Now Shenzhen is facing a transition of economy growth model. It wants to become a city of creativity rather than labour.Though knowledge is the huge stimulus of a city's economy, universities can't still catch up with the pace of the city,so does the knowledge. On the other hand,as the technology development pace is becoming increasingly faster, the subdisciplines are also expanding exponen-tially.And this results in the fact that the traditional teaching way of the university cannot meet the demands of the market and a great gap between the demands of specialist and generalist emerges.

GOAL SITUATION STUDY DRIVERS

Through the study of the university typology,we try to catch some information of the trend that university develops. And we find that if we can seperate some colleges from the universtiy and combine them with the local resource or local factories,it will not only afford the citizens or students more specialized knowledge and chances of practices, but also create more job opportunities, which can finally improve the city’s economy in turn. And we call these colleges DIY colleges.

04 SENIOR SCHOOL DESIGN OF SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY

SITE

SITE LOCATIONCONCEPTFrom the traditional senior school typology analysis, I find the original school style is too fixed and cannot meet the new demands of interests from the students nowadays. So I am wondering if there is a good way that stimulates the students’ interest and cultivate them in a different approach from the original education style.

I am trying to seperate the interest courses from traditional courses and provide students with more flexible and communicative spaces. These spaces can be inserted with the public spaces, corridors with frequent uses and even on the landscape of the roofs.

The site locates at the sea carring trade industry area in Qianhai. How to deal with the noise and create the comfortable environment in the school becomes the issue.

PROCESSING DIAGRAMROAD SYSTEM

STRATEGY I Static and Dynamic Zoning

Devide the zone from north to south according to different demanding levels of quiet environment,

Centralize the western area as education area and the decentralize the eastern area as open space connecting the green space on the east. Use the curve to embrace the activity area to form a half enclo-sure feeling for the students.

STRATEGY II Centralization and Decentralization Zoning

Break the building blocks into the courtyard form and half open space form in order to permeate the greenery insides.

STRATEGY III Fuzzification EdgesNorthern cargo road brings nosie to the site. Entrances requires to locate on the west and south.

On the east of the site, there is a green space. Try to connect the open space with the planning green space.

The northern area is used as logistics area. So how to create a interior good environ-ment for students becomes an issue.

LANDSCAPE

ARCHITECTURE

As the main entrance of the senior school requires to locate on the southern of the site, it will devide the buildings into western and eastern zones. In order to make the connection and the negative gable wall more open, I try to enlarge the entrance lobby as a flexible open study area. It brings about the energy in between the buildings.

Page 18: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

CONCEPTS

FLEXIBLE INTEREST ROOMS

Try to break the original school into flexible parts and fixed parts so as to create a new environment for study. Study can happen in anywhere.

Study can even happen on the roof with greenery, which is more comfortable for students to adopt new knowledges.

From the corridors we can see there are lots of open space for study to happen.

The functions of fixed rooms and flexible rooms are set according to the grade from interest study to professional study.

Decompose the library resources and other public resources and recombine them to create a new type of classroom.

Page 19: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

SECTIONS

FACADE DESIGNFrom the model, we can see the division and the permeation of the education building and the open space.

According to the division and demands from the grades, the sections between the buildings are also different. From the section I look into how to arrange the flexible functions in between the lobby and the buildings.

ECOLOGY

Fanling locates near the boundary between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, acting as an important role to connect the ecology sources of both area.

In the regional scale, Fanling is also the middle ecological link between Mai Po Bay and Pat Sin Leung.

In order to organize the whole area well, we use the existing context of ecology to set up a ecological circle connecting the whole Fanling.

PROBLEMS STRATEGIES RIVERBANK TREATMENT

The contamination and flood issues affect the river.

Use the wetland to filter the river and transform the riverbank.

Protect and set up wetlands to make the environment more ecological and the river more accesible.

Construct ecological tourism areas for the citizens, providing a way to activate the riverbank. Therefore, the citylife can expand to the nature, so can the nature permeate into the city.

The original situation of riverbank is not assesible. Creating the wetland helps to release the pressure of preventing flood and provide the citizens with a nice water-front to get approach.

The high-rise are taking place of the farm land.

Build up a sustainable agriculture system.

If we just build up a normal city without any characteristics, the city will be unsustainable and unprofit-able in a long run.

Apply different types of buildings to protect the water flow and offer more accessibility.

Ecological Challenge Farming Challenge Residential Challenge

The eology area contains great species resources. The water contam-ination is serious here and flood from Shenzhen affects the local farm lands.

The local farms are facing the challenges that the government and developers will take their lands to build residents.

The residential demand is great in Hongkong. How to build a high density residential area combining with the ecology well is first thing we need to consider.

Ecological Life Support Systems (acronym CELSS) are a type of scientific endeavor to create a self-supporting life support system for space stations and colonies typically through controlled closed ecological systems.

We are trying to set up three systems to support and opperate the ecological life with physical accessments but also the economical access-ments.

So we carry out three systems to support our ideas.

-Ecology system:Aims to create a nice waterfront for people to approach.-Agricutlture systems: Tries to upgrade the agricultue for industry and tourism.-Urban systems: Aims to connect nature to the urban areas.

Page 23: Portfolio hongyi zhong original

FUNCTIONS

Residential and Nature Co-exist Farm and Tourism Co-exist

From the urban to nature, we consider how the acessiblity can imporve by building typology and block division.

From the farm to tourism, we think about how to upgrade the original farms to high-end producing farm like organic food and processing food as well as how to combine farm with tourism.

ZONING

ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM

Residential Zone

BUILDING TYPOLOGY

SECTIONS

By zoning into ecological tourism, agriculture and residential, we can define each zone with a charac-teristics. Furthermore, we also decide the functions of the zone and apply different building heights and typology according to the existing conditions.

Therefore, we improve the diversity of the area and the physical and motional connection between each zone.

The urban blocks consists of public residentials, private houses, commercials and facilities that connects old districts with our site.Along the roads, you can see different buildings' typologies responding to the wetland and riverbank.

Agriculture Zone

The agriculture area will be an area combined with food processing industry, farming research center and agricul-ture tourism. The agriculture needs to update and transform to be a new kind of diversial agriculture for surviving. They offer different life experiences to citizens and make themselves sustainable in return.

SECTION 4-4

SECTION 1-1

The ecological area aims to offer a public space for citizens to relax. So we decide to maintain the farmlands and wetlands for people and relocate the urban high density area to the original industrial area which is near the MTR and not in use anymore.

From the urban area to waterfront, the buildings’ podium volume will be smaller and even disapear, which can provide more acessibility to the waterfront and protect the river flow under the ground.

Although the height difference between the old district and new is large, but on the street level the connection is continual by low green podium and over hang building form.

CHRACTERISTIC WATERFRONT TOWNDAPENG NEW DISTRICT XIASHA STRIP URBAN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION, 1ST PRIZEINTERNSHIP IN SMARTECTS STUDIO(1/6), SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY, 2013

We borrow the natural pattern from the local famous Danxia Mountain to offer new identitiy to the urban complex. And we design the triple cultural buildings with courtyards according to their charateristics: Archive & close, Library & half open, Cultural Center & open.

CAMPUS OFFICETHE TECHNOLOGY PARK DESIGN OF SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY, PHASE IINTERNSHIP IN SMARTECTS STUDIO(1/4), SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY, 2014

In this project, we are going to combine the campus with office. Therefore, we insert different public functions under the podium such as meeting, conference, salon, cafe and hacker space. As for the building, we use the H form in order to make the building lower to keep a friendly relationship with the campus and ensure the largest view and the ventilation quality.

In China, lots of tourism spots are constructed with large scale hotels and entertainment facilities. However, in our project we are going to create a characteristic town with human scale. Firstly, we use the space syntax to assess the accessibility and devide the blocks and streets into several levels. Then we design every streets and blocks with different identities to dedicate the diversity for the town.
