My thesis project was centered on desiginging or the urban poor o the slums using theinherent dominant culture o resilience and improvisation to inorm the sustainabilityprinciples that we sought to design in. As a result, the slum had to be studied and analysedto come up with local materials available, the culture o sel-building and the mechanismsaround that as well as the sence o community and very creative ownership, environmentaland material flow systems that had been improvised to meet their daily needs. Tis analysisthen served as a basis to redefine sustainability in the wider sustainale city discourse withthe goal o ormalising the inormal as it were. Te model which eveolved rom this study, the Sustainable Integration Model thereore defined the design response providng or aninteresting way o integrating the inormal into the existing urban system o Accra.

Each year close to 16% o graduates rom Moroccan Universities are hurled into the unemployedclasses o the population. In Te ace o this growing menace, many graduates tend to just makedo with whichever job they can lay their hands on . It is our ervent believe that these graduates i well equipped via entrepreneurialtraining during and afer their school-days can help solve not only this problem but societalproblems as a whole. With Te already cast array o theoretical skills they are equipped with ,anadded beefing up in entrepreneurial spirit will go a long way to change their mindset and theirapproach to society and the world as a whole. Te likes o the Silicon Valley,Stanord UniversityEntrepreneurship centres and many others around the world give credence to the positivityand the change effect associated with such a king o establishment. In view o this, our proposal or an entrepreneurial training centre in the heart o theeducational quarter o Rabat will not only bring entrepreneurial training to the door step ostudents but will likewise serve the greater Rabat Sale Region. Proposals For the centre willinclude a multi-purpose amphitheatre, a block o hostels ,offices or start-ups,laboratories andworking spaces. Courses Will be organized year round ,the centre will equally be opened orstart-up teams to work on their various projects. As a centre o excellence sustainable designprinciples like use o runoff, photovoltaic, natural ventilation and green roos were employed.

Te National School o Architecture was built in the early 2000’s around a time when theneeded or incorporating sustainable design principles in architecture was not pressing.Existing structures do not thereore ully comply with sustainability best practices. Our proposalor this project was to make projections o eatures which could be added or modified in otherto improve upon the sustainable nature o an architecture school .Aside the environmental and cost benefits, one other crucial good is the act that studentarchitects will observe and use at first hand eatures they learn in a theoretical manner inclasses.Concentrating mainly on the semi circular studios block, our proposal seeks to generateelectricity orm solar panels and correct the greenhouse effect as a result o the plexiglasscovered inner atrium. We introduced suspended plantings in the atrium which will serve tooxygenate the hot air thereby cooling inner temperatures. Most o the studios were redesigned using state o the art renewable materials to increaseacoustic and thermal comort. A biogas system was also proposed to make use o paper andhuman waste on site.

Afer an urban analysis o the Sidi Bernousi Industrial area o Casablanca, our research broughtto the ore some needs o the inhabitants. One major issue was with housing or the low and
middle income classes. We were tasked to make proposals o multi-storey housing or the middle and low classeswhile promoting societal integration o the populace. In due course our proposal or an intermediary housing scheme sought to promote a mixedclass residence by incorporating various types o housing. We proposed studios ,apartments, duplexes and suspended villas to cater or wide needs. In so doing we could have a total responseto all classes whiles conjointly providing activity through the commercial spaces on the groundfloor. In laying out the block plan , the open block system o French architect Christian de Portzamparcwas studied and applied in other to maximize land use and promote effective integration obuilding to site.

Still on the Sidi Bernoussi Industrial area, this project consisted o designing a sports complexto cater or health and social needs. Our Approach was to provide a huge acility which will beaccessible by all inhabitants not only or major events but daily routines.Te most striking element o this project was the use o laminated timber. Tis was due to the very wide spaces needed to be covered.

Tis project done in collaboration with colleagues, sought to make proposals or a wide expanseo land situated in between two major avenues. One major issue was the narrow but lengthy nature o the land as well as the noise pollutiondue to the vehicular movement.Inspired by the sinusoidal nature o sound waves our response was to work on the landscape inthe orm o waves which in certain places quite down to orm playing fields and at others riseto provide shelter or commercial spaces.Te whole length was divided into 3 main sections to acilitate working on the project.

Tis proposal was or a 8-storey hotel and conerence acility in the heart o amale. Te design briedemanded a high-end class hotel that could easily be replicated in other cities o Ghana to create ahotel ranchise. Te size and nature o the plot demanded careul design so as to account or all theessential acilities needed or a smooth unctioning o the hotel. As a result, basement parking wasproposed with a raised deck swimming pool that is almost halway the groundfloor. Te sky loungeand bar provides a convenient open-air space or relaxation and enjoyment o the views. Te lastfloor will serve as the executive and business suites with swiming and catering acilities envisagedon the roo, the first o its king in the city. Te signature acade and irregular rectangular incisionsallow to break the otherwise monotonous look typical o hotels while allowing or shielding romthe exccessive sunshine in these parts o the country. In all, t he intricate use o space and the volumeprovide a pearl worthy o the standard and a project to look out or in amale.

Urban Planning in Arica – Could we leaprog?
Te world as we know it is undergoing undamental change in spatial patterns. Indeed it has been so or a while.
Settlement patterns are one o the most dynamic acets o the human experience; in act they are, as we know it, a
reflection o any civilization in space as history is with respect to time.
In 2007,we passed a landmark in history, where more than hal o the world’s population officially lived in urban areas.
According to projections rom the United Nations, a dip is nowhere near; urbanisation is set to reach about 85% and
65% by 2050 in developed and developing countries respectively. By figures that will mean that, population gain in
urban areas is projected at 2.6 billion, absorbing all population growth expected by 2050 whiles drawing in more people
rom rural areas.
Now considering the developing world, Arica is set to see an increase by 0.9 billion. Tis will mean increased pressure
on urban areas with its attendant effects, high demand in services and acilities.
Tere is no doubt that the cities in the developing world are the attractors. In Arica, i you want to be in the flow
o opportunities move to a city! Te rising middle-income class is happening in the cities, the Internet, mobile and
other technology revolutions are all happening there mainly because inrastructure is existent, acilities are somewhat
provided and more so political power has is domiciled there.
Cities are a rich mix o economic, social and cultural dynamics. Like magnets they attract!
In spite o all these opportunities in the city, challenges persist, planning is a headache, most cities do not have
urban master plans to control development, they thus move with the wind. In situations were they exist, they are not
implemented or are ar out-dated with such an increasing urbanisation rate.
Te conclusion one can easily draw is that to most Arican governments who are plagued with other major problems, urban planning is a “luxury”. It is not too much o a priority; in as much as we can leave the people to make their own
cities why bother?
One could imagine that in such a state o affairs everything passes in the city, chaos is the order. Challenges reach new
heights and sometimes grow out o proportion, compounding issues.
In the shadow o this absence o planning a lot goes on with the city. Development is by piecemeal. It is more or less like
a tasteless potpourri made up o bits and pieces, a patchwork to say the least.
aking my city Accra as a case, over the past decade we have seen the springing up o gated communities to its north-
eastern part mainly around the current Kotoka International Airport. What has that engendered? A striking dichotomy
o Accra and Accra, affluent neighbourhoods with major acilities and the less downtown ones with practically nothing.
Te historic inner core o the city (mainly the majority Ga communities) is deserted with poor acilities. Another pop-
up eature is the recent so called airport city, with major new developments springing up here and there like an invasion
somewhat creating a ghetto. Tese are just minor developments, which could have been mastered in the presence o a
master plan.
In the light o all these, my view is that i Arica is to develop we should begin to take planning o our cities serious,
especially with the projections o urbanisation we will see in the coming years. As it were, most o these challenges will
be captured i we are to plan our cities. Urban sprawl, ghettoization o affluent and poor neighbourhoods, communal
means o transport, health and educational acilities etc. will all be thought through in a typical master plan, projections
made and strategies put in place. Aren’t these the same problems our governments have been trying to solve? I am more
than convinced that to tackle the many ills o the Arican society, we should begin to start planning our cities, and in
earnest whiles making room or the approaching 0.9 billion!
Making a case or urban design o our cities brings to light, the issue o which particular model in view o the
numerous ones the field o urbanism has witnessed through history.
As a continent, we were able to leaprog to mobile technology .we have done so in other technology fields in
some ways because or instance there was a lack o inrastructure as in the case o fixed-line telephony. But
one o the main reasons that gives us this urge is because we lurk behind mostly, that gives us a second-comer
advantage. We should begin to seriously make the best out o this.
Now, getting back to which model o urban design I believe we could once again, leap rog to sustainable urban
design. Most o the models we see and hear o rom Howard’s garden city, to Le Corbusier’s radial city o the
industrial heights down to post-ordist green urbanism have all been responses in some sort to crisis that
plagued the human society.
We in Arica need not relive the same experiences; we have the second-comer advantage to leaprog to
sustainable urbanism. By this we will be looking at all acets o sustainable development in our planning.Tat
will mean economic, social and environmental improvement and equity or our population.
Sustainable urban planning will mean checking urban sprawl through compact cities, being resource efficient,
providing or communal means o transport, addressing social and economic equity among others.
Current models o western sustainable urbanism are in most cases more or less “accessorization” o buildings,
i.e. attaching gadgets to buildings. Some are what I describe as sustainable “upgrading” or “infill” as most o the
inrastructure exists already.
Our case with Arican cities is different. Inrastructure is inexistent or below standard. We will have to really
look at the whole big picture, pick through elements that will have a domino effect o sustainability, an integrated
systems approach I guess. So, my view is that in aiming at taking urban design seriously we could leap rog to integrating sustainable
development principles and i n doing that I believe the way to go is through an ecosystem approach o integration.
Systems, which work like a natural ecosystem, where all is systemised, loops are closed, no waste!
Above all, we should not orget to contextualise these concepts. Te Arican context should be in no way lef
out that will bring out our true identity.
