The competition called for a 44 story office tower to be designed on top of the existing NY/NJ Port Authority Bus Terminal. The strategy for this proposal was based on principles that emphasized the fact that a successful office tower would only work on top of a revitalized, functional bus terminal.

The intent of the design was to fulfill the following goals:

• Energy efficient design with a sustainable approach

• Views to a park, not a parking lot

• Flexible office floor plates with good lease spans

• Views which take advantage of the PABT’s unique position above 41st street

• An open and inviting ground floor lobby with access to all modes of transportation

• Clarified circulation with fewer undefined areas

• Accessibility improvements

• Upgraded destination, retail such as a high-end food market

• Increased level of service and upgraded finishes

• Reconfigured MEP with sustainable strategies throughout

Located on its northern edge, the City of Monterrey is the second largest in Mexico and is typically known as the country’s industrial epicenter. Along the last couple of decades, the city has faced a vertiginous economic, manufacturing and real estate growth. Like many cities in Mexico, Monterrey was planned according to the Spanish reticular grid, which had to be adapted to the dramatic topography of the region.

Nested between two spectacular mountain ranges, the site is located in Valle Oriente, a fairly new development to the east, along Fundadores Avenue, which runs on an east-west axis connecting the old town to the new urbanized areas.

The particular topographic conditions of the area infl uenced a strategy for the massing, stratifi cation and distribution of the program. The result of the various geometric studies is a tessellated form that evokes the hills and mountains surrounding the site. The project called for an iconic structure that not only addressed an urban arrangement, but a complex program comprised of a 5 star hotel, high end apartments, offi ces, shopping center, parking and extensive green areas.

The architecture of the building also responds to the site’s environmental conditions by envisioning multiple ways of interacting with the extreme climate of the region, such as cladding options; active versus passive mechanical systems; sun shading devices and self renewable energy.

This assignment was completed during a summer internship at the commercial architecture firm Grupo LINK.

The aim of the portfolio is to showcase the firm’s trajectory from their foundation in 1983 to the present, while avoiding the common portfolio format of simply listing their projects and adding photos, dates and details.

This required the development of a visual language that highlights their areas of expertise, along with the factors that allowed LINK to become a segment leader and demonstrate their competitive advantage.

These elements were combined with renderings, photographs, plans and hand drawn sketches of their most notable work.

The final product was a 33 page long book.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Gathered and organized renderings, digital plans, sketches and photography to create a functional archive

• Designed and laid out a 33 page long firm brochure over a six week period

The Trinity Overlook is part of the Trinity River Corridor, a large scale urban renovation project in Dallas, Texas.

Designed with an open program, the pavilion will function as an anchor to a retail deck on top of a new parkway to be built on the Trinity River bank.

The building will also become a vertical connection to a pedestrian promenade that is part of the larger park plan.

After exhaustive research was conducted on city exhibition buildings around the world, dozens of massing studies were narrowed down to three schemes for further development.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Analyzed program data from similar projects around the world to compose a building program

• Modeled and rendered dozens of massing volumes and alternative schemes, as well as a 3D model of downtown Dallas

• Coordinated communication with external consultants

As Dallas revamps it’s infrastructure as part of the Trinity River parkway, a new Calatrava-designed bridge will render the Continental Bridge obsolete.

This proposal is an attempt to revitalize the historic bridge with a leisure-oriented program.

Three schemes of varying degrees of cost and complexity were developed. Scheme 1 consisted of a linear park that involved minimal invasion to the existing structure and became an extension of the great park below.

Scheme 2 consists of a series of pavilions with a diverse assortment of leisure and cultural activities, while scheme 3 gathers these elements into one grand structure.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Produced slideshows that explain the design strategy and objective to the project’s stakeholders

• Modeled and rendered dozens of massing studies, as well as photorealistic photomontages

• Calculated a budget for three scheme variations

This is an academic project for the Advanced Urban Planning and Design course at the University of Melbourne.

The assignment consisted of creating a set of urban design guidelines that would transform a neglected section of Toorak, a wealthy suburb of Melbourne.

A four-stage process was followed to design the criteria and guidelines that address the problems observed in the Forrest Hill precinct:

1. Sneak a Peek

The purpose of the first visit to the site is not to start analyzing right away. Get acquainted with it, observe from a tourist’s point of view. Ask questions: Is Forrest Hill memorable?, Did you get lost?, How long would you stay there for? If you were looking for residence in the area, would you consider FH?

2. Dive in

Stage 2 allows for further analysis of the site, without going in too deep. Disregard the buildings and built form.

How do the roads connect with each other? How permeable is the site? Is it noisy? Dirty? Expensive? Who lives here and why?

3. Look closer

Go see, visit, analyze, observe, annotate. An exhaustive but key step to achieve an ideal result. Look at everything: the atmosphere, the buildings, the people, the plants, roads, cars, etc. Talk to people and see what they think about Forrest Hill, how can it be improved? As always, consider constraints and opportunities to design a solution that addresses these.

4. The rules of the game

Through careful analysis of previous steps, you must generate rules that allow or limit the developers, users, government, etc in order to achieve an optimal future for Forrest Hill. One that has been designed taking into consideration all the factors observed in stages 1 through 3. Have fun!

Over 40 guidelines were developed and referenced in the charts above. Some of the most ambitious are listed here:

• Create a visual and physical link to the riverbank, incorporating a network of public spaces with a pedestrian-only path (1.4)

• Regulating the implementation of accessibility features for all public spaces

• Creating a continuous façade by way of a common setback and height limitation

• Transform the corner of Chapel St. and Toorak Rd. into a landmark with an open atrium to welcome pedestrians into Forrest Hill (6.4)

• Expanding and unifying footpaths to allow for vegetation, furniture and retail activity

• Regulate building heights to provide views towards the river and city

Design Guidelines: • Restructuring circulation and establishing one-way roads and closing dead-end streets

• Commercial activity in the ground levels, residential above

• Convert a segment of Alexandra Avenue into an underground tunnel to connect the riverside park with the Melbourne High School grounds (5.1)

parking and public transportation facilities; a botanical garden; and private mixed use development.

The central core of the program fosters modes of interaction, education and exploration for both the area’s residents and its visitors.

Work is already underway to clean the water and make it drinkable. The refurbishment of the water basins and its future use as recreational facilities will dramatically increase the quality of life of the inhabitants of this neighborhood.

Xochimilco was declared an UNESCO world heritage on 1987.

Located in the natural preserve of Xochimilco, in the southern part of Mexico City, the master planning project addresses a unique set of social, urban, and architectural challenges.

On the one hand, the existence of the lakes, the Chinampas farms and the Canals provides a very fertile ground for re-thinking the natural habitat and reconnecting it back to the city. On the other hand, serious air and water pollution problems; scarce hazardous waste disposal facilities; a population of which 40% is below poverty; and major migration from rural to urban centers give new urgency to the need for new forms of sustainability.

Taking on these paradoxical variables, the project seeks to create a new equilibrium and innovative sets of sustainable patterns.

The project embraces and improves the existing program of the Xochimilco park. Originally developed in unplanned, disconnected phases, its scattered elements are hard to reach and threatened by severe environmental issues. The proposed master plan reorganizes these elements in a single vertical strip of developed land that is closely related to the aquatic surroundings and regional history.

The existing program includes an Olympic Rowing Track; a Flower Market; Cuemanco Sports Park; private sports clubs; research facilities; regulatory water basins; parking and archeological sites. The proposed additions to the program consist of an Aquarium; a Dolphinarium; an open Amphitheater; a Water Park; additional

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Designed the concept for the Ciudad Verde masterplan, a capital project of the current Mayor

• Produced marketing collateral to influence key decision makers to accept project proposal

• Managed presentation structure, materials and meeting logistics at the Mexico City office

• Collaborated with strategic consultants to standardize the look and approach of their presentation

The advantages of the new master plan were explained with the diagrams to the right:

Vegetation: the introduction of the floating botanical gardens, as well as the reorganization of the sports fields create a green shield that encloses the entirety of the new Ciudad Verde.

Water: The two large water basins are cleaned and purified, reestablishing the aquatic link between them by expanding the canal and reactivating the wetlands in between.

Built Environment: the destination amenities, entertainment and cultural venues (yellow) are realigned into a north-south strip along the canal, bringing back to life the flower market (red) by placing it between two attraction poles. Federal sporting and military buildings are grouped together and separated from the public activity (blue and magenta)

Located at the western edge of Midtown Manhattan, the Clinton Park mixed-use development will occupy more than half of a city block with 1.3 million square feet of commercial and residential programs.

The base building will include a 50,000 square-foot auto showroom fronting 11th Avenue with 250,000 square feet of service floors below grade, a 30,000 square-foot horse stable for the NYPD Mounted Police, a 7,500 square-foot neighborhood market, a 30,000 square-foot health club, and 200 parking spaces.

The residential form sitting atop this plinth creates more than 900 apartment units, including 20 percent inclusionary housing.

Each floor steps up from the one below, allowing for unobstructed views to the park and Hudson River and providing private roof terraces with green roofs on every floor.

The design of the project capitalizes on the site’s through-block condition and its spectacular views to Clinton Park and the Hudson River. In an attempt to keep the project’s mass both away form the park and off the narrow side streets, the design presents a totally unique design resolution for Manhattan.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Modeled and rendered several interior and exterior schemes for the finish and material selection process

• Drafted a 16 stairway construction documentation set

• Assisted in the assembly of a ULURP application drawing set

• General red marks correction and construction detail drafting at the construction documentation stage
