In a world of high rise monotony, low and medium rise insipidness, 'hoME' offers the opportunity of low cost affordable city living where the user has a valued and important input in the design of their home. 'hoME' is a user design led mass customised housing scheme that is constructed on demand, developing over time as need necessitates. More than just a just a cluster of houses, 'hoME' intends to develop a vibrant long lasting community in contrast to the stop gap, short term, over priced speculative house building schemes that dominate the landscape today. At 'hoME' the community and ownership bonds created, outweigh simple capital accumulation and are enabled by socially beneficial leveraging of Manchester City council's pension pot using their Housing Investment fund mechanism.

As the older generation age, they become more dependant on help from others, and are at risk of becoming very isolated, even in a built up area.

My project plans to find a solution for all these problems by creating a 'Growing Old Together' unit on the green field site beside the closed Green End Pub, Using this site takes advantage of being in the same area as the pocket of Old people which I identified in previous research, thus still gaining all the advantages but also seeking to create a community of people who will come together to live, help, look after one another and grow old with dignity together. I feel that this form of community has many more advantages than leaving people to fend on there own as they age and is a far better solution to standard retirement homes.The houses and spaces in this unit can be easily adapted to meet the needs of the occupants as they age, be it physically or on health matters. By bringing this group of old people together, very valuable family housing is freed up to be distributed to those in most need of a family house. Keeping people in there own communities is imperative, while also allowing new families the chance to move into a good existing community structure and near local assets.
