Editorial.
Dear reader,
In this portfolio you will find, next to my curriculum, a selection of architectural projects made during my studies at the KU Leuven (Sint-Lucas Ghent, BE), the Bauhaus Universität Weimar (DE) and the University of Cincinnati (USA) as well as project works realised at the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (KU Leuven, RLICC), where I am currently studying.
I believe architecture is the play of material, structure, construction, bearing and being borne, earth and sky, concavity, emptiness, light, air, odor, receptivity and resonance. Architecture does not stand on its own but refers to the built environment around it. It is anchored in a site in which it triggers vibrations. It should grasp the essence of its place but at the same time be aware of the evolutions in the world. *
I hope that while exploring this selection of projects you may discover some of the pleasure I had in realising them.

The site is located in a quiet residential area, only a stone’s throw from the Grand Place of Brussels. The district is characterized by a predominantly immigrant population. The commission asked for a residential complex in which several individuals and families can stay, with some common areas for the residents. In concrete terms the program of the ground floor provides space for several offices, a laundromat, a newsagent, restaurants and a square in the shape of the former block that was there. The building embraces the square along two sides and recedes to give something back to the environment.Furthermore, the building accommodates 28 duplex apartments (on levels 1-2 and 4-5) and 14 studios (level 3). On the basement level are the technical areas for elevator, heat exchangers and storage space. The residents can choose their openness to the environment: when they need absolute privacy, they close the movable panels.

Bathing with connection to the sea and the forestSecond Master - ‘Masterproef ’

This new relaxation complex is situated in front of the 1930s ‘Den Permanente’ bathing installation in Aarhus, Denmark, between the Riss Skov forest and the Kattegat sea. With its restaurant, tourist information office, sauna facilities and indoor and outdoor swimming pools it turns the ‘Permanente’ into a real permanent and all year round family destination.

Port of Ghent.A new landmark building for the administration
Third Bachelor - First semesterTutor: Dirk Coopman
The Port Authority had the intention to build a new Visitors Centre at the Rigakaai, on the border between the city and the harbour. With this Centre, they wanted to respond to the growing interest in the port of Ghent. They asked for a comfortable but striking and recognizable building.
The building is equipped with a multifunctional space for the reception of up to 100 people. From this room and the adjoining terrace you have a beautiful and extensive view of the harbour and the activities in the Grootdok and on the quays. The first floor houses offices and a multipurpose hall, with a view of the harbor where visitors are received. On the ground floor there is a lobby and rooms for the sailors (changing rooms, showers, storage and a refectory). A bridge over the Vliegtuiglaan helps visitors coming from the city to reach the building and to cross the street.

Exhibition Der Architekt Henry Van de Velde, Weimar 2013 -
Scenography and research First master - Second semester

Schnitt A-A’1/100
In 2013, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar celebrated one of its most influential minds - Henry van de Velde. The time he spent in Weimar between 1902 and 1917 is considered his most productive phase. In 1902, he founded his arts and crafts workshop and erected two of his most important architectonic works - the Weimar Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School and the School of Arts and Crafts - between 1904 and 1911. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar honoured the Belgian architect on the occasion of his 150th birthday. I was glad to be part of the team of students who were responsible for the research and the scenography of the exhibition in the ‘Oberlichtsaal’ of the university.

The English Convent, Bruges.Establishing a value assessment and a master plan
RLICC - First yearIn collaboration with Eva Bouton, Carlota Cobos, Christos Koutsaftis and Dongxu Zhao
Tutor: Barbara Van der Wee
The English Convent in Bruges is the last surviving convent located on the European mainland, set up by English Catholics, starting from the sixteenth century, when the Anglican church forbade other religions than the state religion. Today the Convent still functions as a convent, though its heydays lay in times past. The complex of buildings grew incrementally over time to suit the needs of a community, which at its peak once counted not less than sixty sisters and today only counts ten anymore. This results in the current situation, where the sisters are facing difficulties to keep up the convent on their own, due to the large scale of the complex. They have taken several measures in order to cope with this issue, such as selling the part of the convent that used to be a school to the ‘Sint-Leo College’ or giving the former farm into a long lease to the ‘Ark-gemeenschap Moerkerke’.
We made up a historical and urban analysis, a value assessment and an assessment of the technical condition of the buildings, together with a survey of the domain and a masterplan of how to avoid the gradual decay in order to come to a global vision on the future of the convent.
