BHDP Co-opIn the spring of 2014 I was employed as a co-op at BHDP in Cincinnati. While at BHDP I was a member of the retail design team, and we worked primarily with the Claire’s and Icing stores. For Claire’s I did the planning and design for numerous stores of various sizes in multiple countries. I was responsible for satisfying the design requirements of our client while meeting the demands and complying with the restrictions of their various landlords and contractors. I worked primarily in AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Photoshop to create architectural plans and renderings for our client and the contracting services.

Kung Fu StudioFor this studio assignment I designed a Kung Fu studio space to be used in the summer. The concept was an open design with long, open ribbed structures that could be adjusted for different situations. There are fabric pieces that can be draped over the structure for varying degrees of privacy and shelter. The space is designed in a way that after the studio clears out, it can be used as a park pavilion. For this project I used Photoshop, Illustrator,

Ludlow LibraryMy Immersion studio project was to design a library. The library site was on Ludlow, several blocks from UC’s campus. The goal was to design a space that could be utilized by the entire community. I studied not only other libraries to come up with our design, but also did several studies with materiality and day lighting. To complete this project I used a multitude of skills, including Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp, Rhino, and Climate Control.

Powder PrintThis design was an exploration of a classical ribbed vault. I took the

basis and foundation of the vault and morphed it into a space that could

be appreciated as a modern space while still retaining some of the

original classical elements of the ribbed vault.

For this project I used Rhino, Illustrator, and the university’s 3D

printing center.

Color StudyFor this studio assignment I went to Over-the-Rhine, a historic Cincinnati neighborhood, and took photos of the buildings and homes within the neighborhood. I then chose a photograph with color variation and simplified the colors down to five basic shades. Using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator I simplified the colors within the photograph to the five I had previously chosen. I then took those five colors and determined which were the darkest, and which were the lightest to come up with the tones of blue. I used the tone of blue that corresponded with the intensity of one of the five colors to create the monochromatic representation. Photoshop and Illustator were used.

Spatial ConstructionThe design objective of this group

project was to create a spatial construction in the middle of

a densely populated quad on the University of Cincinnati’s campus.

The design was based on the need to draw people in, yet create a space that compressed you as you went through.

Pine, MDF, and screws were used to complete this project.

Permeable WallThe goal of this project was to create a unit that could be used in a way that, when combined with other like units, could create a screen wall. Seventy-five units were used to compose the entire wall and were linked together to create an interwoven surface that allowed light to penetrate the structure.Pine, wood glue, and nails were used to create this project.

Spatial Fill StudyThis study started with a building on

the University of Cincinnati’s campus. Measurements were taken of the

building and a sectioned model was built. We then assesed the theme or concept we had taken from the

space, and created something to fill that space in a way that showcased our idea of the space itself. After the space had been evaluated and a fill had been constructed there was an exploration to document the space

and the fill we had created. Basswood and terracotta clay were used to build the model and spacial

fill. Gouache, micron drawing, aceton transfers and photoshop

were used to document the space.

Line, Plane and MassThis exploration was completed in

several segments. The first part of the assignment was only using lines, and

creating a spatial feature with them. The second part of the assignment used

planes and lines, with the same intent. For the last part of the assignment, lines, planes, and mass could be used to cre-

ate a spatial focus. I then documented that by flattening the spatial feature into a two-dimensional creation and finished it

with shades of black gouache.Basswood was used to complete the

models and gouache paint was used to document the space.

Collage StudyThe study of space within a collage started with three different collages.I then chose one of the collages to

advance further and break down spatially. For the collages I used a

variety of media from magazine clippings to carpet samples.

For the breakdown of the spaces I used micron pens.

Napkin EnsembleFor this assignment I created a piece using only napkins and white string.

The purpose was to see how an everyday item could be used in

repetition to create an interesting composition.

16

Rose Petal VestThis project was similar to the napkin ensemble in the sense that the design objective was to use a single item in a repetitive way that created a wearable item. For this piece I used rose petals to create a vest that was tailored specifically to my body.

Hidden Space StudyThe design objective of this study was

to imagine the hidden space within a mausoleum at a local Cincinnati

cemetary. We chose a mausoleum and then created a section cut view

of the space. To complete this study I used photographs, pencil drawing,

and photoshop.
