RESUME / ABOUT ME

GUNKEL RESIDENCEThis house located in Germantown Ohio was an adaptive re-use of a 19th century power plant for a family of 4. The inspiration for the design was pulled from old steel mills and factories located in the rust belt. The structure is exposed to the occupants on the inside and the outside reminiscent of the structure in old steel mills and factories. The design also incorporates new modern elements such as a kal-wall system and color panels made from 3-form. The main floor in the new addition consists of floor to ceiling glass walls to bring the nature outside inside on this narrow urban lot.

PASSIVE HOUSE WALL DETAILThe passive house wall detail was completed for a sustainable design class at Miami. The objective was to take a standard construction wall and eliminate / reduce the thermal bridging in the wall while making it at least an R-50+ wall. This was a collaborated group project with the construction of the physical full scale model pictured on the page to the right. The detail we were given was exterior wall to intermediate floor pictured in the lower right has an R-19 rating. Our updated passive house wall pictured on the top right on this page consists of a 2x6 stud wall used for service of run-ning wires and interior functions, with 4in of XPS, then an 8” SIPS panel with a rain screen and furring strips for vinyl siding. The updated passive house wall eliminated the thermal bridge with an R-90 rating.

PROIA-RICE RESIDENCEThe Proia-Rice Residence was a renovation of a back yard and patio to their newly purchased home on Lake Erie. The clients wished to have a place for sun bathing, cooking, eating, and entertaining. Due to the location to the north axis the sun deck was rotate to face directly due south to allow for maximum even sun tanning through-out the day. The sun deck placed on the north south axis broke up the very rigid lines of house and the rectilinear space. The colors for the project were derived from the homeowner’s favor-ite aspect of the lake, the magnificent sunset views over the lake. The project used several sustainable materials such as recycled plastic decking, re-claimed rocks from excess buildup on the lake front shore, and recycled glass fireplace.

KING CAFE PATIOThe King Café Patio is a studio group design project located on Miami Univer-sity of Ohio’s campus just outside the on campus coffee shop. The program and site possessed many difficult challenges on a very narrow and awkwardly shaped lot. The goal of the project was to ac-company all of the programmatic needs with the addition of bringing more plants and greenery to the site. The King Café patio allows space for students to wait for rides under a covered roof, eat and study on benches, a place for an out-door lecture, and allow wheelchair ac-cess to the site as well as to the library and handicap parking spaces which it does currently not possess. The entire project was designed to be completely removable and prefabricated off site with the exception of the wheelchair ramp.

RETREAT SHELTERThe Miami University Retreat Shelter located along the woods line on Miami’s western campus. The Retreat shelter was part of a group project in which I was responsible for the building of the model and choosing of materials to be used in the project, and some of the design process. The Shelter is meant to be a meditation place for students to expe-rience the nature of the western campus and study space for students.

DEEDS POINT PAVILIONDeeds Point Peace Pavilion was a project designed for the city of Dayton on the Deeds point park site just north of downtown. The park was at the point of where two rivers con-verged to make the one that flowed through the downtown area of Dayton. This merging of water was the inspiration of the Design as a symbol of Peace and tranquility for the visiting dignitaries in conflict resolution. The entire building is situated around a central reflection pool with a bridge suspended over the pool as to reflect on past conflict moving to a new peaceful era. The circulation of the building was important as well to keep the public separate from the dignitaries but while still allowing them to move and interact with the building even when there is not an event taking place or a peace treaty signing.

WASSON WAY FAMILY MEDICAL CENTERThe Wasson Way Family Medical Center located on the corner site of Paxton and Wasson is a medical office complex for family medicine housing a Pediatricians office on the second floor, a Physical Therapy office on the first floor in addition to a Day care center. Across the plaza on the site is a coffee and sandwich cafe with public rest rooms for the Wasson Way trail users. The design for the site and the building is based off a grid from which runs parallel to the street with a grid based running north and south parallel to the trail. The proportions of the grid are based off the width of the trail. The grid running north and south of the trail is the base grid for the office building and the grid running parallel to the street is the grid for the land-scaping and the new courtyard/plaza featured between the buildings. The merging of the two grids is creates the Wasson Way medical center and the merging of the two is meant to engage and slow the trail users down to venture off the trail and into the surrounding spaces.

ABOUT ME:

opportunities integrated with clear design solutions...

I believe that there are opportunities that present themselves in front of us everyday and that we should always seek those opportunities integrated clear de-sign solutions to better our life and the lives of others. I’m an architecture student in pursuit of my archi-tectural degree to pursue my goal and passion to improve the field of architecture through the design of residential homes and developments to be sustain-able, affordable, and to better the lives of the people that occupy the homes in health, safety, and emotion-al well being. My goal is to some day be an architect and a developer to bring these envisions of sustain-able residential houses to life.

In addition to my goals in architecture I have a diverse interest in design ranging from architecture to fashion design. I have designed and produced two fashion collections featured in local fashion shows in the Cin-cinnati area. As well as having a diversified interest in design

Some of my hobbies beyond architecture and busi-ness include tennis, skiing, alpine ski racing, traveling, automobiles, and boating.
