IM Kwon-taek’s ninety-fifth film tells the story of renowned nineteenth-century painter JANG Seung-up (Choi Min-Sik), an artist whose revolutionary work - and persona - has forever changed the face of Korean art.
CHIHWASEON (PAINTED FIRE) begins in the 1850s, when KIM Byung-moon (AHN Sung-ki) saves the young JANG Seung-up from being beaten by a group of drifters. In return, JANG draws him a picture, and as Kim carefully examines the child’s rough drawing, he notices the extraordinary potential of the young boy. Years later, KIM Byung-moon becomes JANG Seung-up’s mentor and encourages him to pursue the life of an artist. KIM eventually gives JANG the pen name of Oh-won.
Later on his life, JANG Seung-up meets Mae-hyang, a daughter of a Yangban (social elite) who attracts him deeply. Although their passion is strong, they are eventually forced to separate when she runs away from catholic persecution....

CHAPTER | 13 | INTRODUCTION
Whether you have just started life as a christian, or have been on this journey for years, you will have encountered all kinds of questions.
True Christian faith doesn’t run away from questions. In fact, it delights in them as one of the main ways of growing in our relationship with God. Thinking more deeply about our faith is in fact simply a way of obeying the command of Jesus to love God with our minds, as well as our hearts and souls and bodies. Committing yourself to the discipline of study for a while is an excellent way of growing in faith and love for God.
‘Theology’ can seem daunting, but it simply means learning how to know and speak about God better. If you’ve ever asked questions about your faith, or wanted to find a way of taking it to the next level, then the School of Theology might be for you.
‘IT IS SUCH A PRIVILEGE TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE YOU GET FOR SATURDAY MORNINGS, WHO WITHOUT EXCEPTION HAVE BEEN FIRST CLASS.’LIFETRACK STUDENT 10-11
6 | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY
WHO CAN TAKE THE COURSES? Anyone who wants to deepen their faith and understand it more fully. In particular the School of Theology is designed for those who already, or who will in the future, exercise leadership roles such as leading Alpha groups, the Marriage Course, Pastorates or home groups and who want to deepen their understanding of their faith so they can be more effective in those ministries. It is ideal both for those who have recently come to a new faith, or those who have been Christians for many years.
BUT I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEOLOGY!You probably know more than you think. In any case, we don’t assume that students have studied any theology before. After all, you have to start somewhere.
DO I HAVE TO BELONG TO HTB TO TAKE THE COURSE?No. The course is primarily aimed at HTB members, and the majority of students will be from HTB, but people from other churches are very welcome to apply.
WHO WILL TEACH IT?Much of the teaching will be given by SPTC’s own staff team. However we will be bringing in experts from elsewhere to address a range of different topics in the courses.
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?The School meets on Saturday mornings over two terms, with a short break for half term.
AUTUMN TERM
24 September – 3 December 2011
HALF TERM
29 October 2011
SPRING TERM
14 January – 24 March 2012
HALF TERM
11 February 2012
We begin at 9am with breakfast. Then we spend some time in worship, before the first session. We continue through to 1pm, with a break mid-morning for coffee. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. There is always the option of going out for lunch at the end of the morning.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?Each term costs £150. You can sign up for one term at a time. There is a student rate of £100 for each term.
Bursaries may be available for those who cannot afford the fees.
If 8 or more of you from your pastorate (if you are from HTB) or from your church (if you are not from HTB) sign up for School of Theology by 1 September 2011, then the fees will be reduced to £100 per person for the term. There will also be the option of being in a small group together if you would like to be.

JOIN A PASTORATE
A Pastorate is a group of about 20-30 people who meet together once a fortnight for food, friendship, teaching, worship, prayer and fun.
Over 100 Pastorates meet across London on Tuesday evenings, during the day throughout the week and on Sunday afternoons.
Pastorates are the place to find life at the heart of the church, and joining a Pastorate provides ideal opportunities to grow as a Christian. Pastorates participate in social action projects, take teams to other churches, help at services, courses, and conferences and much more.
MALSHANGER
Set in spacious grounds near Basingstoke, just an hour and a half by car from London, Malshanger is the Pastorates’ ‘home in the country’. As the Pastorate retreat centre, it is ideal for groups of up to 29 people to go away for a weekend, to be refreshed, equipped and encouraged.
