Art & Life at the Gowanus

Page 4: Portfolio

The Art & Life at the Gowanus project is located along the

Gowanus River in Brooklyn, New York. Its concept is derived

from the cohesive and adhesive properties of similar and dis-

similar materials, combined with the grains of a slashed wood

piece. The project encompasses an approximately 500.000

sq. ft. program of living and work quarters for artists, exclusive

retail spaces for artists and a museum dedicated to the

unique history of the Gowanus area and historical battle

ground across from the site. The organic flow of the entire

complex creates benevolent lighting conditions for artist lofts,

as well as distinctive spaces for art exhibitions and gathering

to enforce the sense of artist commu-

nity.

High Line Gardens

High Line Gardens was a warm up project for the Urban

Design class. This project required a vertical means of

circulation from the street level to the High Line, includ-

ing an elevator, an information/tourist center, a snack

bar and ADA compliant restrooms. Bordered by West

17th and West 18th St, and by 10th Ave and the High

Line, the site’s triangular shape is featured by the turn of

the High Line from the west to the east side of 10th Ave.

When viewed in plan view, the curvy gesture of the High

Line is supported by a step-like structure. The curvy

movement and the rectangular structure led to the con-

cept of hanging gardens, which foresees rectangular

platforms securing a gradual descent or ascent

in a circular manner.

Model Building

Following models were created as show cases for different

architectural firms under the collaboration and supervision of

an architect. Handcrafted wood or museum board including

laser cut acrylic pieces back lit with LED lighting, resemble

projects in Seoul, South Korea, Manhattan, New York, Stam-

ford, Connecticut, Somerville and Quincy, Massachusetts.
