Social Media is a growing area for marketing on the internet and has many benefits for

business. However, it is very difficult to track how much work results from these channels

and their use can be time consuming.

The main benefits are:

1. It gives more points of contact on the internet other than websites on their own.

2. Having a presence of social media channels and any activity on these channels

improves organic ratings on Google. It has an holistic effect on the web.

3. It provides easy and immediate ways to put new content onto the web -

Google likes new content.

4. Research - it allows research to be carried on potential customers and more

specifically, the potential contacts within those prospects.

5. Can give a foot in the door with prospects.

6. Creates the opportunity to find old business contacts or school friends, etc. and ‘link

up’ with them - they could be potential customers today.

#careful what you s@y!- it’s there forever and reflects on you and

the Company

There are 5 main channels for social media:

Twitter

Facebook

Linked In

Blog

Google+

They can all be connected in one way or another, which means that in some

circumstances, a post in one channel is published on the other channels, which

can save time.

linked in- once connected to someone, you remain connected, even if they move

business, so you now have 2 sets of potential contact details

Twitter

Porter & Woodman has Twitter accounts for every business, including a Group account -

@madeinstour

The things to remember about Twitter are:

1. Good marketing discipline - limits you to 140 characters (including spaces), which

means your tweets have to be concise and have impact.

2. #hashtags - use hashtags wherever there’s a keyword that might be searched for or

that’s trending on Twitter. eg. #chalkboards #hampers #packaging

3. @mentions - use mentions to relate to our other accounts eg. @chalkboardsuk

@woodenboxuk @winehampers @madeinstour @markjdenison

This example also includes a weblink (weblinks will usually be shortened by Twitter

and not appear in full like this).

Twitter (#cont’d)

4. weblinks - use weblinks to connect to websites, e-news, blogs or individual

products pages you are referring to in your tweets. Google likes weblinks and

they improve organic ratings.

5. follow others - when you follow other accounts, they become aware of you. If they

are interested, they will look at your Twitter account, maybe follow the links to your

site and perhaps, follow back.

There have been instances when, shortly after following an account, they

have followed back and we have then had enquiries and even orders - but

this could be a coincidence.

tweet deck- tweet deck is a utility that allows you to see all your Twitter accounts at the

same time - allows quick ‘re-tweeting’ across all accounts

Facebook

Facebook is a more personal social media tool, used by most people to talk about things

going on in their lives.

However, Facebook also allows the creation of advertising pages for businesses. These

can contain contact details, weblinks, product photos and general posts about the

business and it’s products.

The page is a presence on the web that people might see and be interested in.

A page post will be seen by all of your friends, provided you ‘like’ it. It’s therefore important

to keep track of the pages as often as is practical and ‘like’ the posts to make sure they

reach as wide an audience as possible.

posts- It’s a good idea to post on Facebook first using the Twitter protocols shown previously.

Posts from these pages are automatically ‘tweeted’ on the corresponding Twitter

account.

- Then use Tweet Deck to ‘re-tweet’ across all Twitter accounts.

- If your Linked In profile is linked to one of the Twitter accounts, the ‘post/tweet’ will also

show on that.

Google+

This is Google’s version of Facebook, which also has advertising pages for business. It is

picking up in popularity, but more importantly, it’s another google channel. This means that

Google sees the posts, which improves organic rating.

Unfortunately, there’s no live link to the other channels, so posts have to be repeated

manually.

Page 9: Porter and Woodman Social Media

Blogs

A Blog is a mini-website which allows you to post longer stories about products, the

business and its activities.

These are useful as they are mainly text based and provided they are updated regularly,

Google sees this as changing content, which improves organic ratings.

Use lots of keywords about products and the business and links to sites, which will also

improve ratings.

Page 10: Porter and Woodman Social Media

Linked In

Linked In is a professional networking site. Your profile needs to be as complete as

possible. This shows prospective contacts why they should be dealing with P&W -

and more specifically YOU!

Linked In also has company pages. It is important that you enter your job description and

link it to each business. This means that anyone viewing your profile will also see the

businesses you are associated with.

posts- tweets will automatically beshown on your profile, butposts need to be manuallyposted on the relevantcompany page

don’t#forget!!!- once connected to someone, you remain connected, even ifthey move business, so younow have 2 sets of potentialcontact details

website updates

Some of our social media channels have windows onto our websites. This means that as

social media posts, tweets or blogs are published, they are automatically updated on the

sites. Google sees this a refreshed content, which it likes and these updates help to

improve our organic ratings.
