ABOUT ME

Greetings!

My name is Ricardo Esteves, I’m from Portugal and I’m 24 years old. I graduated recently in Product Design (Master’s degree), and now I’m looking for job opportunities, where I can show what I’m capable of, and specially where I can learn more and develop my skills. I’m used to work with other people, where I always do my best, not just for working but also encouraging and cultivating good environment and good communication.

Besides Product Design, I like other kinds of design and arts, like graphic design, branding, web and illustration, seeing it all as the science of comunication. Also music has always been my hobby. I’ve been in musical projects since the beginning of my courses, and I’m one of the re-founders of ArquitecTuna (aca-demic band group representing Architecture Faculty), in wich i learned a lot as a manager, speaker, and public relations.

A solution of mobility and transport for acoustic drumsSolução de transporte e mobilidade para baterias acústicas

Scientific supervisor: Prof. Paulo MaldonadoProduct Design Master esis

Page 11: Portefolio English

AbstractAcoustic drums are one of the biggest musical instruments played nowadays in musical bands, making it one of the hardest to transport. ey are formed by drums and cymbals suspended by dierent kinds of structures depending on the model and the drum kit. e size, the weight and the lack of exibility of the components makes it hard to pack and transport. We proposed to develop an acoustic drum project with solutions for these problems by pack-ing up the drums inside each other, headed to a target of drummers who play in many dierent places, and therefore, subjected to constant displacements with their instruments.

Academic work developed with João Tereso and Luís CastanheiraCity's urban furniture

This project aims to develop a line of furniture with a coherent language, exible and modular, for Santo Amaro de Alcântara, Lisboa. The module conception was inspired by the beam shape, similar to the “Ponte 25 de Abril” bridge form, and it is adapted to create patterns.

Ceramic lamp | Academic work.

Focused on the lamp functionality (illumination), the product searches for a way to make it possible to direct the light. Based on the idea of

turning it into a box, which would let the light out from its entry, and so being able to direct it, the lamp contains several "boxes" making it possible

to direct the light in many directions. The shape of the components openings allows the lamp to distribute the light in a bigger range.

FIBERGLASS AND PLYWOOD CHAIRGRAY CHAIR

Page 32: Portefolio English

The Gray chair results from an exercise with the purpose of

providing students some modeling knowledge with compos-

ite materials, specically berglass. It was asked to design

a rest chair for an inside space, using berglass, MDF or

plywood in one or more components of the chair.

The entire project was developed around the appropriate-

ness of the hull and structure shape to the available materi-

als, technologies and adaptabilities.

With the intent of giving a sense of lightness and simplicity

to the hulls shape, we decided to leave the back of the chair

open, suggesting only its tridimensional

shape when the chair is seen from other angles. We neither

wanted to overdraw the shape of the arms: they describe a

simple curve which supports the seat and provides a

support for the arms.

The prototype was built in molded berglass and MDF, hull

and structure respectively, both xed through two chrome

steel tubes.

Producing an outside stand brought me the idea of playing with the natural light. Inspired by the games of shadows often used in tiles, by rotating or giving them shape, I thought about applying it to woods,

and so, create a pattern of crooked woods. This pro-ject is based in the idea of collecting and reuse old woods, and so creating a rhythmic pattern of differ-ent textures and appearances.

Page 51: Portefolio English

Tuna is not just the name for a kind of fish, tuna is also a musical band made up of students from a university. It is a band with a very strong relation and fidelity with the tradi-tion: it has rigid dressing codes, besides of the special suit; it plays only acoustic, and usually, traditional instruments; and are very faithful to the traditions in ceremonies, formalities and musicality.

Habitually a tuna have from about 20 to 40 people, most of them students from the university where the tuna belongs. Each tuna has its own traditions and costumes, but of

course, there are patterns common to every tuna. The suits don’t change much between them, neither the musicality nor the instru-ments: they all tend to be traditional, and most important: unplugged. All “tunos” (people from a tuna) have a cape, in which they stitch badges they collect by offering them to each other over the course.

By the time I entered college there was no tuna, there had been one but it ended up two years earlier. So, the people interested, gathered around and started a long work process of creating a tuna. I am privileged to belong to

ArquitecTuna

that group of re-founders. During that process, we’ve came across the obstacle of creating the logo for it, and I got the task.

We started with a group of 5 insistent colleagues from different courses, levels and ages, with very little musical knowledge. After 5 years of growing, ArquitecTuna is now a healthy group of 57 members, with a signifi-cant musical quality, and a very efficient man-agement and functionality inside the organs that composes it. Still, the best thing about it is that it has become an incredible family, with a very strong friendship between every element.

Performance in Mértola, 2011

There were an old logo, so I redesigned it. I preserved the concept of the water representing the Tejo river near our university, and the pres-ence of instruments. I also added a front, similar to the logo of the faculty, and a crow which represents Lisbon. The compass represented in the “A” was also gotten from the university logo.

Wayshowing for Faculdade de Arquitectura

Academic work

Page 61: Portefolio English

This is a wayfinding proposal for Architecture Faculty of Technical University of Lisbon.

Since this is a space of student’s constant mobility, including foreign students, it’s essential to ensure their orientation within this academic area.

The Architecture Faculty is formed by different pavilions, each one with two or more floors and different courses and spaces. This turns the place into a big challenge for this project.

The proposed system aims to be simple and flexible, in accor-dance with the surrounding architectural language, allowing a quick and effectively reading, assisted by the use of colors and symbols which helps distinguishing spaces and degrees.

We choose the line as a logical thread of the whole system, revealing a playful element that arouses an animation on the walls, and extends from the orientation coming from the picto-grams.

We developed different solutions for this project, guaranteeing that it would be very easy and intuitive to understand it.
