Quipu Exercise Sheet

Name:

Page 6: Portafolio Social

This is an example of a quipu. This shows you how the knots and ropes work. Use this example to help you with the questions below. The dots represent knots.

Questions

1.

a) How is the arrangement of knots on each cord related to the number below

the cord?

b) How is zero represented on the quipu?

c) How is the number on the top cord related to the numbers on the three pendant cords?

Page 7: Portafolio Social

2. Write the numeral shown by the knots on each

cord.

#1

#3

#4

3. Draw knots on the top cord in the picture below to show the sum of the numbers on the three pendant cords. Try to do the addition mentally. Then check by writing the numerals and adding them. Was your mental addition correct?

Page 8: Portafolio Social

4. Two quipus are shown below. Each quipu has three cords attached to the main cord, but one was accidentally torn off. Luckily the top cord gives the sum of the number on the three cords. Fill in the knots on the missing cord (shown by an empty black line). Try to do the work mentally. Then check by writing the numerals.

a) b)

5. On a separate piece of paper, draw a quipu having four cords hanging from the main cord. You might want to have each cord be of a different color. By placing one number on each cord, draw knots to show these numbers: 341, 87, 172, 634. Using the pattern of quipu place value, draw knots on the top cord to show the sum. Compare your quipu with that of a classmate. Do they agree? Are they easy to read? Discuss with your classmate what these numbers might stand for.

Once you have your quipu created on paper and have discussed what is might stand for, come up to the front to get the supplies to make a yarn quipu. You will recreate your drawn quipu using different colors of yarn and putting the knots on the yarn where appropriate. You have now become an Inca Quipucamayu (this is a keeper of the quipu, an accountant).

This is a paragraph that copy when my oral presentation of Moctezuma II.Moctezuma II ( c. 1466 - June 29, 1520 ) , also known by a number of variant spellings including Montezuma, Moctezuma, Moctezuma and respect in full by early Nahuatl texts as Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin ( Moctezuma the Younger ) [ NB 1] , was the ninth ruler

Page 13: Portafolio Social

of Tenochtitlan tlatoani or the current 1502 to 1520 . The first contact between indigenous civilizations of Mesoamerica and Europeans took place during his reign, and was killed during the initial stages of the Spanish conquest of Mexico , when Conquistador Hernán Cortés and his men fought to escape the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan .

During his reign the Aztec Empire reached its maximum size. Through warfare , Moctezuma expanded the territory south to Xoconosco in Chiapas and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec , and the Zapotecs and Yopi join the empire. [1 ] He changed the previous meritocratic system of social hierarchy and widened the gap between pipiltin ( nobles) and macehualtin ( commoners ) by prohibiting commoners from working in the royal palaces. [1]

Portrait of Moctezuma in history has mostly been colored by his role as ruler of a defeated nation , and many sources describe him as weak and indecisive will. The prejudices of some historical sources make it difficult to understand his actions during the Spanish invasion. [2]

"I have a dream"

The August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream", in which he tried to expose the hypocritical nature of politics and

Page 15: Portafolio Social

free African Americans. King's speech used tropes Baptist sermons because he was a preacher. The famous phrase of the speech is "I have a dream." King said the phrase repeatedly, indicating that dreamed that one day both black and white Americans would have equal and would see each other as equals.

"The Ballot or the Bullet"

Malcolm X delivered his speech "The Ballot or the Bullet" on April 3, 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio. In the speech Malcolm X argued that blacks should do

Page 16: Portafolio Social

everything necessary to achieve equality. You voting or "vote" was a method by which they could achieve their goal. If voting could not equality, Malcolm X argued that the only option would be "bullet" or a violent form of protest would try to achieve it by force.

"Democratic National Convention 1984"

Page 17: Portafolio Social

At the Democratic National Convention of 1984, Jesse Jackson officially announced his intention to run for the U.S. presidency. He reflected on the inequalities that still affect African Americans and made himself the champion of change. He wanted to take the Democratic Party and the nation in a new direction. The most famous phrase was Jackson's speech: "Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow - red, yellow, brown, black and white, and we are all beautiful in the eyes of God."

Page 18: Portafolio Social

"Speech at the Democratic National Convention of 2004" In 2004 Barack Obama, then a senator from Illinois, was asked to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. His speech said that there is not a liberal America and a conservative, argued that there is only one United States. The message of the speech was of great importance for the time, but this would also affect Obama after. We put in the spotlight throughout the country where they eventually embark on a presidential race. Many argue that his successful career came from his remarkable speaking style that was demonstrated at the national convention.

Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. In the year 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started a revolt against the Spanish by declaring war late into the night of September 15th. Father Hidaglo is famous for shouting the words, "Viva Mexico" and "Viva la independencia!"

On the morning of September 16th, the rebels marched to Guanajuato to engage in a battle with the Spanish Army. The revolt was at first a success, however, the rebel army later failed to defeat the the Spanish Army in Mexico City. As the Spanish Army chased the rebels, they were captured attempting to flee to The United States. This uprising marked the beginning of the fight for independence by the people of Mexico.

With his capture by the Spanish Army, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was tried for treason, found guilty, and executed on July 30, 1811. After his death, the leadership of the revolutionary army was assumed by Jose Maria Morelos. Morelos fought the Spanish four more years including the Siege of Cuautla. In 1815, Jose Maria Morelos was captured and executed for treason on December 22nd.

From 1815 to 1821, the fighting was done by small guerilla bands. Two leaders of these guerilla bands included Guadalupe Victoria (whose real name was Manuel Félix Fernández) from Puebla and Vicente Guerrero from Oaxaca.

After ten years of civil war and the death of two of the rebel leaders, the independence movement had almost failed. It was the Liberal Spanish Constitution of 1812 signed by King Ferdinand of Spain that slowly brought the people of Mexico together to form a new empire. On September 27, 1821, the Spanish government signed the Treaty of Cordoba and the Mexican Empire was formed.

Page 20: Portafolio Social

Mexico

The country of Mexico is the third largest nation in terms of land area, and second largest nation in terms of population in North America. As of 2006, Mexico's population was well over 100,000,000 people. Mexico is located south of the United States and north of the nations of Belize and Guatemala. The Rio Bravo (called Rio Grande in America) forms much of the border between the United States and Mexico. Spanish is the official language of Mexico. Did you know that many of our words such as tornado, tomato, taco, armadillo, and banana come from the Spanish language? In fact, much of our land came from Mexico too. The states of Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, California, and Arizona were all part of Mexico before the Mexican War. Mexico is a land full of contrasts. Northern parts of Mexico are dominated by the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. The Sonoran Desert is the world's most biologically diverse desert and contains the world's entire supply of Saguaro Cacti. The central portion of Mexico is dominated by the mountainous Mexican Plateau. The southern parts are characterized by rainforests. Mexico's rainforests are high in biodiversity and feature animals such as jaguars, cougars, and exotic parrots. Mexico features high mountain ridges on its Pacific Coast and on its eastern sides. Its highest point is known as Pico de Orizaba, located near the city of Puebla. Pico de Orizaba rises 18, 701 feet above sea level. It is the third highest mountain in North America, as well as the continent's highest volcano. Pico de Orizaba is classified as a dormant volcano, as it last erupted in 1846. Mexico is well known as a popular tourist destination. People from all over the world come to bask on its beautiful beaches in Cancun and Acapulco. In addition, Mexico has dozens of important archaeological sites that preserve ancient Mayan ruins. The most famous site is Chichen Itza, a major Mayan City that lasted over 600 years on the Yucatan Peninsula. As you can tell, there is a lot to do in Mexico and a lot of really neat things to see. For more information, stop by your local library and check out a book on Mexico, or, visit one of hundreds of websites dedicated to illustrating all that is wonderful about Mexico.
