PURPOSE OF STORAGE AREAS
TRANSIT STORAGE
SHORT TERM STORAGE AREAS
The functions of short- term transit storage areas
are:
To act as buffer between the different loading and
unloading requirement of ships and land transport so that
the rates of handling of these respective transport modes
can be adjusted to the need of each. To provide a holding area for cargo whilst custom
procedures are carried out and port and ship
documentation dealt with.
To provide space for cargo consolidation and
organization
To allow for:
Time-table uncertainties in ship arrival owing for weather orbreakdowns
Interruptions in operations caused by shortage of labor or mechanical
breakdown

PURPOSE OF STORAGE AREAS
TRANSIT STORAGE
LONG TERM STORAGE AREAS
The functions of long-term transit storage areas
are:
To provide space for cargo influenced by climate
Some trade surges are created by market conditions in
which shippers make speculative purchases to take
advantages of low prices or quantity and as a result, require long term storage in ports.
Political and strategic considerations may cause large
and irregular movements which make similar demands
on ports. The threat of withdrawal of important material
from world market can lead to stock piling. Ports may
have to provide long term storage until hinterland storage
sites are available The last main cause for longer term storage arises from
the nature of the commodity itself. Ripening (e.g.
bananas), settling (bulk wines), adaptation for transport
(freezing or packaging) or for distribution (evaporation of
liquid natural gas) are example of products requiring long
term storage in ports.
