Port Information: Nacala
Nacala is situated in one of the deepest natural harbours in the
world and one of the best natural harbours in East Africa.
Nacala is the main port servicing the province of Nampula, as
well as being the main link in the “Nacala Corridor” to Malawi.
The port has an ideal geographical location, and not only serves
northern Mozambique but is connected to Malawi by a 600km
railway (privatised with ongoing refurbishment). This allows for
cargo to be moved into Zambia and Zimbabwe if required.
Nacala has four general cargo berths, three berths for general
or container vessels (one of which serves as a liquid berth /
terminal) and two container berths. The container berths are
mainly used for container vessels, but the port does allow
general cargo vessels to operate at these berths on the basis
that container vessels gets priority. The port of Nacala and the
railway line have both been concessioned to CDN (Corredor
de Desenvolvimento do Norte), who manage the commercial
department, safety, pilotage, receiving vessels calling in the
port, berthing and unberthing operations, overall stevedoring
operations, port stay and harbour dues, and general cargo
from Nacala to Malawi and Zambia.
