WELCOMEI’m proud to welcome you to the 2017 program for the Port Noarlunga arts precinct.

Port Noarlunga is a popular family and tourism destination, with local attractions including its jetty and reef, the boutique-style cafes and shops in the township and a range of public art and open spaces.

Since 1993, the Arts Centre at Port Noarlunga has been a focal point for artistic and creative expression in our city.

The Arts Centre is located in the Old Institute Building on Gawler Street and provides an accessible space for events and activities, inclusive of an ongoing program of art exhibitions and performances, along with a range of classes delivered by local artists.

The opening of Sauerbier House Culture Exchange in September 2015 has further reinforced the area’s status as a vital arts hub for our community and visitors to the area.

Sauerbier House is a contemporary art space and place for cultural exchange, located on the bank of the Onkaparinga River. The heritage listed building has been sympathetically transformed from a residence into a centre for the development and promotion of the arts, and supporting and strengthening the creative cultural expression of the region.

In 2017, Sauerbier House will become Adelaide’s southern outdoor Fringe Festival hub, with the staging of Fleurieu Fringe. Live entertainment, performing arts, children’s activities, art installations, workshops, food trucks, bars and artisan markets will feature each Friday and Saturday during the Fringe Festival.

Throughout 2017, the Arts Centre will continue to host monthly matinee performances, presenting high quality arts and entertainment experiences by South Australian performers. Evening performances will include a concert by the Australian String Quartet, who, from their home base at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, reach out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, commissions and education projects. Other special events in 2017 include Losing Faith in Unicorns, presented as part of the dreamBIG Children’s Festival in May and the Adelaide Belly Dance Festival in October.

In November, Port Noarlunga will come alive with the Deep South Blues Festival, with music and events spread throughout local venues, cafes and performance spaces.

I encourage you to visit and enjoy the unique and culturally rich township of Port Noarlunga, a highlight of our beautiful city.

Lorraine Rosenberg Mayor City of Onkaparinga

We express our uniqueness through the arts. Culture defines what we are, who we are, what we do and what is around us. It reflects, challenges and enhances our lifestyles.

The City of Onkaparinga is committed to bringing high quality arts and cultural opportunities that weave arts and cultural experience into the everyday life of our community.

Bordered by the Onkaparinga River and the sea, the township of Port Noarlunga has local significance for the Kaurna people, with the Kaurna name for the river being Ngangkiparingga, meaning “Women’s River” and the Tjilbruke Dreaming track running through the area.

Guided by the city’s Arts and Cultural Development Strategic Management Plan, the Onkaparinga Arts team supports and provides opportunities for local artists. We integrate art

into the design of public spaces and develop opportunities to bring people together and participate in arts projects. We value and promote artistic vibrancy and excellence and celebrate community expressions through the arts.

The arts are a key attraction for local and interstate visitors as much as enjoying the food, wine and natural environments that our region has to offer.

The City of Onkaparinga has a rich calendar of arts and culture including music and theatre performances, arts festivals and community-based arts initiatives. These are major contributors to the cultural and economic vitality in our city.

We have put this program together to showcase the diversity of our artistic and cultural offerings and to provide you with the whole year of activities in one convenient book.

I invite you to engage with the artists and events in Port Noarlunga and throughout the City of Onkaparinga in 2017.

Jason Haskett Team Leader, Arts and Inclusion City of Onkaparinga

ARTS CENTREThe Arts Centre is a flexible arts space which comprises three galleries, an art shop, a performance space, rehearsal studios and a visual art studio. It is home to a number of local arts, craft and theatrical groups and is very much a part of the local community.

To support local artists and the community, the centre delivers an annual program of exhibitions, events and performances. Events and activities reflect local history, character and culture and positively contribute to the identity and vibrancy of our community.

Located within the beautiful seaside area of Port Noarlunga, a visit to the Arts Centre can be combined with a short walk to the beach and a visit to the many cafes and shops in the township.

HistoryThe Arts Centre is located in the Old Institute Building on Gawler Street. The institute opened in 1924, and has since played an important role in the creative and cultural life of the region for many years as a performance space and previously as one of the only movie theatres in the Fleurieu Peninsula. This role is continued today through its use as a centre for the arts in the south.

PerformancesThe centre blends support for local artists with a mix of performers and performances from outside the region. This provides the community with access to shows they may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience.

The Arts Centre is part of the Out of the Square consortium, a metropolitan entertainment circuit which provides the best South Australian performers and talent to entertain audiences.

Out of the Square presents a monthly matinee program from February to December.

HireThe gallery and performance spaces are available for hire, for the presentation of performances, events and functions. Technical and event management support is available.

SAUERBIER HOUSE culture exchangeLocated within short walking distance of the Arts Centre, Sauerbier House is a contemporary art space dedicated to the creation of living cultural dialogues and local creative exchange.

In September 2015, Sauerbier House was relaunched after extensive renovations. As a heritage building, the restorations were carried out in accordance with strict guidelines to protect and conserve the original features. The house now offers purpose built studios for artists and writers in residence, exhibition spaces and adaptable landscaped grounds for events.

HistorySauerbier House is the former residence of pioneer farmer, George Sauerbier. Sauerbier built the historic stone villa on the banks of the Onkaparinga River in Port Noarlunga, circa 1897.

The building has since been named in the family’s honour and is a state heritage community asset that has been restored and transformed into a centre for developing and promoting arts practices, supporting and strengthening the creative cultural expression of the region.

Artist and writer residenciesEach residency is for a period of three months. Residencies are offered via an expression of interest process with the selection process overseen by a reference group. A mix of established and emerging contemporary artists from diverse backgrounds, practices and voices are represented.

Visitors have the opportunity to interact with artists and see artwork being created. A unique window into the unseen workings of artists, their processes and the unfolding of artworks over time. Artists and writers also offer talks, workshops and events throughout their residencies.

[GRAFTd]The (GRAFTd) exhibition platform has been grafted into the existing Sauerbier House artist in residence program to support greater opportunities for contemporary artists to exhibit and share their knowledge and skills in the Fleurieu region. From August, exhibitions will be held quarterly and run over a four week period.

All exhibitions will be accompanied by interrelated workshops, artist talks, or demonstrations with more details available from May 2017 – visit www.onkaparingacity.com/sauerbierhouse

HEATHER DINAS

The Space Between3 February – 4 March

The Space Between navigates the shores of intimacy and traces the fragile lines of relationships, exploring the tentative exchanges that shape our identity, memory and sense of belonging. The stark interior represents another time and place, reflecting the culture of the artist’s matriarchal lineage. As a teenager, her mother’s perceptions of her coming-of-age era were sealed in a vacuum: floating, isolated, never changing.

Using the camera as a mirror, she questions gender roles, rites of passage and intimate relationships. While our personal history has the power to determine our sense of belonging and identity, Dinas has come to see that these constructs are not fixed and can be redefined by our own inner compass.

STEWART MACFARLANE

Gouache Paintings

10 March – 8 April

Stewart MacFarlane first entered the South Australian School of Art at the age of 16, and later studied in New York at the School of Visual Arts and in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts. His pop inspired paintings depict dark and often disturbing unfinished narratives.

MacFarlane has exhibited extensively in Australia, Europe and the United States. His work is held by collections including the National Gallery of Australia; the National Gallery of Victoria; the Art Gallery of Western Australia; and internationally, including the United States. Known more for his large oil canvases, this exhibition highlights MacFarlane’s gouache paintings. These are the initial plein air studies that often become the basis for larger works. Now residing in Maslin Beach, MacFarlane depicts his new surroundings as well as featuring gouaches dating back to 1976 and periods in between then and now.

MARGIT BRÜNNER

Artist in residence3 January – 1 April

‘If we prioritize joy, will we be generating paradise?’ – Margit Brünner

During her residency, Brünner explores the aesthetic and ethic potential and effects of joy-production. Her work is motivated by a firm belief that we become and co-emerge in relation to others and the course of our becoming matters. To put joy-based exercise in perspective, she borrows from Baruch Spinoza, the Dutch philosopher. Spinoza suggested that “we are partaking in the dynamics of a highly affective universe, where each and everyone’s expressions, including those of ants, plants, minerals, thoughts ... have an effect on the whole”.

It remains to be seen whether created affective arrangements might be contemplated as applicable strategy for peace and place-making.

ROSEMARY WHITEHEAD

Artist in residence3 January – 1 April

Rosemary Whitehead weaves large and small tapestries. She clothes hangers, collages love-song sheets and constructs nets, all from donated, discarded and found objects. Inspired by the people she has met and texts she has read, Whitehead embraces the philosophy of the Omega workshops, also favoured by local artist Kathleen Sauerbier, believing that, “art and life are inseparable and artistic output should be expressed not only in paintings and sculptures but also in domestic objects”.

Over the last 40 years, Whitehead has collected a wide range of domestic textile skills, empowering her with an abundance of techniques and processes to be generously shared throughout her time at Sauerbier House.

HELENA FOLL

Global Marble13 April – 13 May

Helena Foll was born in Prague into a bohemian family of two artists. From an early age, she was surrounded with paint, brushes and a playful artistic environment, and started to draw and paint as a teenager. In 2012, Foll decided to experiment with creating collages and with photography.

In her exhibition, Global Marble, Foll continues to explore various photography and collage techniques to convey her interpretations about one of her favourite books, The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint Exupery. The book is a tender tale about friendship and life’s universal truths intertwined with a social criticism of shortcomings of humanity.

MILAN FOLL

When I Grow Up13 April – 13 May

For Milan Foll, the observation or the possibility to tell a story is the most important part of the photograph. As Foll says, “when you read a book, in your mind you convert words into pictures. I like to engage with viewers to create words out of my pictures and to inspire the observers to compose their own unique stories”.

Foll’s latest collection of photographs, When I Grow Up, focuses on capturing and freezing random moments of ever moving and transforming lives in today’s contemporary society, with the main emphasis on youth.

Central to Foll’s work is his ongoing pursuit in revealing and evoking human emotions, by using conceptual minimalism in composition and colour.

RAYMOND LODGE

Light and Distance19 May – 17 June

This exhibition marks the beginning of a retrospective journey, celebrating the work of South Australian born artist, Raymond Lodge (1944–2014).

The first stage of the journey features works produced in South Australia and the Northern Territory, from the last ten years of the artist’s life. The collection includes works in pastel, oil and pen, depicting significant landscapes of the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, the West MacDonnell ranges near Alice Springs and mining towns in the far north of South Australia.

The artist’s work demonstrates a painterly skill synonymous with early Australian impressionism, through an exploration of the relationships between light, form and distance. The landscapes were predominantly painted in plein air, enabling the artist to intimately portray what it is like to be within the landscape.

“On certain days, hot and dry as a bone, When the dullness in town was profound; When dust motes hung heavy and still in the air And the cracks had appeared in the ground.

A child or a woman might idly glance Towards the hills that cradled the town And see something shimmer far above on the path, A flash of colour, or light coming down.

The call would go up, ‘Monga Khan! Monga Khan! He’s coming down the glen!’ And that cry would be passed from cottage to house, From stable to yard and then,”

LINDSAY NIGHTINGALE

Writer in residence4 April – 1 July

A freelance writer originally from the UK, Lindsay Nightingale works on projects, both locally and internationally. During her residency, Nightingale plans to write a fictional novel for young adults using the history and location of Sauerbier House as the backdrop for her story.

Set in both the past and present, the narrative will be based on the fictional discovery of a scrapbook-diary, hidden within a wall at the house. Exploring connecting themes of identity and place; suppression and patriotism; Nightingale will seek to discover more about what it means to be Australian.

The community are invited to contribute to the project.

Excerpt from The Ballad of Monga Khan, commissioned by Peter Drew Arts, 2016.

MIKE McMEEKAN

From the Bowels of Suburbia23 June – 29 July

Mike McMeekan was born in Durban, South Africa and has enjoyed a close relationship with Australia since 1974, when he and his family immigrated here. McMeekan returned to South Africa in mid-1976 to re-engage his studies and to connect with the evolving political/arts climate there; finally settling in Adelaide with his wife and children in 1998.

McMeekan’s artworks are generated from emotional responses to sights containing visual interest; married to observations of social interactions as seen around the suburbs of Adelaide; with an emphasis on the southern beach areas. The exhibition will consist of a collection of large paintings with accompanying drawings and some small sketches to illustrate how his artistic process unfolds.

G GABX GROUP

Story Country4 August – 2 September

The Artists Books Exhibition (ABX) group consists of artists from South Australia (Mary Pulford, Debby Haskard-Strauss and Cher McGrath) and Northern Territory (Luna Bird, Isobel Lopes and Boo). Working both individually and collaboratively, each artist will present artist books, book objects, plus framed and unframed book pages.

Responding to the theme Story Country, artists will explore, compare and contrast their local environment. This will include a travelling book, on which each artist will work on in turn. Using a variety of papers, each artist can choose to combine a number of processes with printmaking techniques. Both traditional and experimental bookbinding techniques with some potentially becoming sculptural objects, will be featured.

A variety of paper based workshops will be offered.

LAURYN ARNOTT

“ For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” – Virginia Woolf

4 August – 2 September

The work of Lauryn Arnott seeks to highlight the regularly untold story of the colonial woman, often married into hardship, working the land and pioneering a new country without recognition or celebration. Using the wedding dress as a metaphor, Arnott envisions the dress to be akin to an open chrysalis, an empty shell from which a woman has slipped away, like the identity of the unknown bride.

Alongside this exhibition Arnott will facilitate a community workshop commemorating local colonial women.

Natural fibres, textured materials and the natural history of her close surrounds will form the basis of her work.

JOHN MARTIN

The Coast4 August – 9 September

As a printmaker, John Martin enjoys the technical aspects and the magic of the printing process. His wellbeing, to a large extent, depends on his ability to draw and print images regularly.

Martin’s favoured subject matter is the landscape, which he likes to explore in either a horizontal or vertical format, along with the rhythm and flow of hills and water, or its visual textures and various moods.

This exhibition is based on the coast; the edge between the land and the sea; the line where the land and the sea meet and the beauty and drama that this meeting creates.

With a background in jewellery design and education, Thomson is looking forward to holding discussions, talks and workshops around the understandings of memory, monstrous hybrids, design for disassembly and the human connection to nature.

Her sustainable design thesis will be available for people to peruse as the installation will be designed specifically using the research methodologies outlined within the thesis.
