What is Port Forwarding?

Port Forwarding is opening port(s) for specific use. Ports are usually closed to prevent hackers from making use of them to hack into your system. Usually we do Port Forwarding for gaming or file sharing purposes.

Game: WCIII

Port : 6112

Your Computer

Router

6112 Port Closed

This makes you unable to host games in WCIII.

NOTE: If these does not work for you, it means

1. Your router’s Port Forwarding might be malfunctioning, try an alternative way which I will teach you later on.

2. You might not have a proper network connection.

3. There might be FIREWALL in your computer that is blocking the port. Configure it to allow the specific port.

4. It might not be the problem of yours but the problem of the other party.

5. Your router might be spoilt.

Port Triggering’s Advantages over Port Forwarding

1. It is easier to configure.

2. Port triggered applies for all computers associated to the router but for once instance only. (The computer which need the port first will get it while the others will remain closed. This is because all the ports are for 1 public IP address only.)

3. You do not need to constantly edit your Port Forwarding parameters if your router is servicing more than 1 PC. (If your router is servicing more than 1 PC, it might assign the specific port forwarded private IP address to the other PC.)

How to determine your private IP?

NeCrOs © 2008

1. Click ‘Start’.

2. Click ‘Run…’.

3. Type in ‘cmd’ in the Open section. CMD is the Command Prompt.

4. Type ‘ipconfig’ into the Command Prompt and enter.

5. You can see your computer’s specific private IP address now. 192.168.1.100 in my case.
